TJ Watt's contract

Near 1/2 way through the season he has 4, mathematics say no. I do realize sacks come in numbers……. So

Watt’s his number?

Salute the nation
I'm thinking he still makes it double digits this year.
Maybe 12-15 total....?

It was and always is about getting above the Tomlin line, until there is significant change from the very top down. Rodgers would have been more apprehensive to join a squad he perceived as in rebuild mode. Moving Watt would definitely give that message. The Steelers have made their bed with this standard that accepts mediocrity, but absolutely fears the unknown and the possibility of falling below the Tomlin line. So the fans sit in this purgatory the ownership has created rather than doing what most see as a necessary risk and actually rebuilding with youth and a coach that willing to accept change and challenge required to bust through the mediocrity ceiling of the weak house they have built. So we will continue to get this average product until the fear of the unknown is overcome. Unfortunately that doesn’t seem to be coming any time soon.

For the record I would have moved Watt IF ownership had the guts to dive into the unknown and begin the much needed rebuild. This just isn’t in the cards for the fans anytime soon though.

Truly a shame indeed to accept mediocrity as a standard because one is crippled with fear of taking chances to achieve something better and accepting the risk of the growing pains to actually build a relevant future.

The Steelers retirement home for formerly good players will remain open for the foreseeable future.

Happy Groundhog’s Day.
I believe this has been floated before, but.........

We ALL know the Steelers/Rooneys aren't firing Captain CoolShades HCMT.
01/01/2028.
This is the current contract end date.
I believe this will be the "hit the ORGANIZATION reset button" date, too.
IMHO, Art II steps down.
Dan II takes over.
Tomlin retires, or spends more time with family, or wants to coach in ___________ due to family presence, or goes to the booth, something.
I think Omar survives this drastic turnover for some stability.
But if/when Tomlin goes, we get a WHOLE new coaching staff, which will get us hopefully better talent developers.
I don't think the Steelers are bad at drafting/finding talent.
They're bad at developing that talent.
I sincerely feel the modicum of success the last 10 years has been off players' pure athletic talent.

It's going to be a LONG 2+ years, kids.

That's true. But someone else has to win, and they are not. He often gets chipped, which means two guys are dedicated on some level to stopping him. Highsmith gets one guy. He isn't winning. Herbig gets one guy. He was winning, and now he isn't playing as much. Stupid. I wouldn't have paid Watt. Not anything against Watt, he is a great player. But teams scheme him out of relevance. $41 million window dressing bascially. I don't think he is done, either. It's just a shame.
Highsmith has looked like Lamar Woodley at the end of his run. Which is not a good look.

Heh. You see it a lot more deeply than I do. I think they haven't fired Tomlin, and this is one of the problems with a long tenured coach, is that the owner and the coach are friends. The owner and the coaches wives probably know each other well. They talk about their kids with each other. You know how it is. I think that is more relevant to all of them than some record of Tomlin's. The other thing is the Steelers have always been a loyal organization to their best players for the for the most part. That's why they sign Watt to a big deal, or Heyward. In the early '80s they were so hesitant to move on from guys who did so much for them. Who can blame them? It does make what happened with Rod Woodson a mystery. They blew that one. But everybody talks about them losing the Steeler way. But this is part of their way, too. Do we want them to become cutthroat? Idk. I'm on the fence about it, at least as it pertains to the players. Tomlin has to go. But I don't know how cutthroat I'd be toward TJ Watt or someone.

Agree, but 10-12 would be my guess.

Believe me though……….. be happy if he’d get 15+

Can this Defense stay as Historically bad as it’s been? Is there any scenario that they can improve drastically.?

I always have hope.!

Oh, he will absolutely NOT get 15+.
I think your 12 number is probably the best over/under number for him.

The refs, to me, recognize the dip in TJ…Has he even gotten a single holding call all year?
Has he ever? They simply don't throw them for the most part when he gets held. In his prime it seemed he was held almost every play.

Once more, guys like watt continue to put up numbers until between 35 and 38. This is why he had the record for most sacks before 30 until sunday but is absolutely no where close to the sacks record yet

You are confusing a predictable d scheme that lets teams double team him and play away from him with the player declining
That's would be valid argument, if I wasn't watching the games and iso'ing on TJ frequently. Is it your contention that Watt is the same player he was 3-4 years ago?

Not speaking for madinsomniac, but I think he is saying typically OLBs are productive till around 35-38 years old.

James Harrison would be a great example.

TJ and Cam contract extensions are going to age like 6 week old bananas.

Not looking good this year but it's only going to get worse in the future.

Some are and some aren't but I doubt he sniffs 20 sacks again, likely not 15. That's what you pay $40M for, not 8-10 sacks.

They cut Troy loose and he was a unicorn, and definitely did Rod dirty too.

It’s weird how and who they decide to pay for past performances and who becomes expendable

Heyward won the only hardware this organization has got in about a decade so that WPMOY award gets him a lifetime appointment much like SC justice Tomlin has.

This is because teams are throwing the ball quicker than ever vs us and we arent jumping routes to discourage them. TJ still gets off the line in a flash, but you cant sack the qb in 1.25 seconds ... and because unlike Parsons and garrett and every other edge, all he does is play the RDE and ROLB position every down he is easily doubled... add to that our DL gets no pressure-so really he is getting all the double teams every down they arent just throwing a quick slant
Our "DL" ...if you can call 1 or 2 players a line, cannot beat 3 OL. It's five blocking four every week. If we do send 5, it's smaller LBs or DB blitzes.

Use 3 big men on the DL. Damn.

The Steelers were in dime and had one big man on the field.
