Trump Presidency: A Final Assessment

Good article, thanks for sharing.

As someone who had deep misgivings about Trump going back to the 80's and opposed him ever since, I appreciate this even-handed article. It shed light on a few things I've been unable to accept, as far as anything that could be called 'good' when it came to this presidency.

I look forward to a return to basic, conservative values from Republicans. A return to decency and normalcy. The country needs that now more than ever.

By what definition, though? What a lot of people felt about the Republican Party before Trump was far too often they would roll over. Rightly or wrongly, that has been the perception. Starting with the first Bush and his read my lips, no new taxes pledge which he rolled over on, to the lack of fight over Obamacare and the refusal to get behind Trump during the first 2 years when so much could have been accomplished, many Republicans feel betrayed. I think most Democrats like their Republicans like parents want their children, quiet and compliant. That is the reason for Trump.

Anyway, how do you define basic, conservative values? Are you willing to accept different opinions? Do you think twitter, et al, should ban views?

Yes it does but with the second impeachment and Biden's language that is quite the opposite conciliatory and the further push to left from those like Bernie and AOC, along with the seeming silencing of anything remotely against the opinions of the left in the media, I don't see any kind of normalcy outside the normalcy of dissention we have developed.

The National Review was the main mouthpiece of Conservatives in America for decades, more recently it is the home of Never-Trumper RINO's, but that was a fair article.

I think it’s a fair assessment, even if he focused far more on the bad than on the good. There is so much that could be said for and about Trump, but what’s the point? Nothing is discussed (or in this forum, argued) to learn or understand anymore. Just be louder, more abrasive and walk away believing you’ve won no matter what. It’s old.

That was a pretty good read. In a lot of ways, Trump was a fool, or perhaps just an idiot, and it came with a pretty high price, at least politically.

Yeah not interested in reading the Never Trump Digest. William F. Buckley must be turning 6500 RPMs in his casket at the way his magazine is trying to curry favor with the DNC.

In a nutshell,

Ultimately, it is my position that the things we were told didn’t matter inevitably damaged the things we were told did matter.

Likewise, when will we see a return to decency and normalcy by the Dems? You know, the JFK days, days when Democrats were moderates?

Now the Democratic party's face are the radicals - the squad, the AOCs, the socialists, the Progressives who want to usher in Socialism, who publicly advocate for violence against their political opponents, who are waging a war based on gender and religion. This is a party that wants to stuff the Supreme Court, add 3 more states, radicalize voting without any voter ID controls. They are pushing for Government-run healthcare, which we all know will be a disaster. A party that wants to destroy our energy independence that has been established, and open our borders to unchecked mass immigration, provide free health care and college to illegals, all in the aim of establishing one party rule.

The Democratic party has become a violence-preaching, anti-American organization.

Now, more than ever, we need normalcy on your side. Desperately.

This is so true. All I know is I will never be fooled again. I keep relating that story of a Trump hater I was talking to, telling me Trump was the worst thing ever. When I mentioned if Trump goes, then Pence will be President, he stated Pence is worse! How can Pence be worse than the worst?

What I can't figure out is people who have experienced this character assassination, like a Romney, just keep running back to the people who did it to them. Who can forget Harry Reid getting up in the Senate and accusing Romney of not paying his taxes? And then saying it is incumbent on Romney to prove he did? I know it is not very Christian, but I enjoyed when that jackass busted his face all up. I guess to keep the money and power coming, you'll kiss up to anybody.

Basic, conservative values to these people means shut up and take what they are going to do. That is exactly what it means. They have no interest in discourse, because they know their ideas are terrible and will not improve anything. If they did, they would actually try to convince people.

The people are still sheep and still voted for the same old politicians they've been voting for. The president may have power via the executive branch but if people really want good positive change, stop voting for the same people in the House and Senate every election cycle. Those are the people that we need to get the hell out of Washington, people like Biden who has been in office for 47 years are not the answer to anything and never will be.
