Carlson said most parents know all the facts of the potential dangers of child smartphone use, but they don't do anything about it because it's "too hard."

"Try taking an iPhone away from a 7th grader," Carlson said. "You'll learn a lot about what 'addiction' means. It's like trying to get a junkie into rehab. You cannot do it alone. Parents need help."

That, Carlson said, is where the federal government needs to step in.

"There's no reason why the Congress, which made smartphones possible in the first place, shouldn't be part of the solution," Carlson said. "So here's an idea: Ban smartphone use for children. Pass a federal law tomorrow. Why wouldn't we do that?"

Tucker, WTF? Will you be campaigning for Nanny Bloomberg?

No kidding. I do think it's the new smoking. It gives people something to preoccupy themselves. If they determined that it would cause eye cancer, folks would still continue to use them.

Personally, while I do appreciate being able to waste time on my phone, I take more enjoyment in leaving it behind and soaking in all that's around us by taking a hike, being with friends and family or just sitting outside and looking up at the stars over a roaring bonfire.

No doubt about it though, the cell companies do have most everyone hooked in the younger generation. Just walk around a college campus and watch.

I'm thinking of starting up an Irish Pub in the next few years and one thing I'm considering is making it phone free. I want folks in the pub to talk to their friends and family and others in the pub. Not faceplant themselves on their phone or annoy others with the noise or best of all talk at the top of their lungs to someone on the other end. I'd have a special section where they can go if they need to take a call...just like a non-smoking section. What do you think?

He's right that it is an absolute addiction but it is not at all realistic to ban them for kids. It would be like banning sugary food/drinks for kids. They'll still get them if their parents choose to provide them.

In some ways, smart phones are the worst invention ever. I remember as a kid, people said children shouldn’t watch more than two hours of TV a day. Kids nowadays are sometimes spending 14 hours a day on smart phones and we’re only beginning to learn the negative side effects.

It's too much. Both of my kids have suffered concussions in sports. One of the things they do after a concussion for a few days is limit screen time. Watching TV or a smart phone is too much on the brain. The brain needs to rest and heal they say, so they tell the parents and the patient - no TV or smart phones for 24 or 48 hours.

The one Dr, a concussion specialist, said he had an athlete the year before who's concussion was so severe, he told the kid for one week no phone, no video games, no TV, no reading, you're excused from school. You may listen to the radio or rest. Light walking. Eat. Sleep.

He said the athlete said Doc - just shoot me now.

I can't live or operate without mine. They are now a necessity. And a bad one at that.

I do think there should be some kind of regulation on Apps. Let’s get real. Most of the Apps are designed using psychological tactics specifically aimed at making them addictive. There is hard science behind this. This isn’t just something being fun so people want to play. It goes beyond that with specific triggers that cause an actual psychological addiction.

in that regard, i do think there should be some kind of regulation. I’d say in the way of labeling. A movie has to be rated and tell you if there’s nudity, violence , etc. Apps should now be required to carry a label if they are built on these addictive principles. That way parents can block their kids from using these Apps.

The instinct to create federal regulations around things that are bad for you is a very dangerous one.

The only thing I want the federalies involved in is upholding the Constitution, protecting the citizens, defending the borders, maintaining a viable currency, and providing meeting space for the delegates. The rest of it (read: all human activity) is none of their business - it belongs with the states.

Unfortunately, the delegates can't tend to their own business.
