ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkey's parliament approved a motion Thursday that gives the government new powers to launch military incursions into Syria and Iraq and to allow foreign forces to use its territory for possible operations against the Islamic State group.

Parliament voted 298-98 in favor of the motion which sets the legal framework for any Turkish military involvement, and for the potential use of Turkish bases by foreign troops.

Asked what measures Turkey would take after the motion was approved, Defense Minister Ismet Yilmaz said: "don't expect any immediate steps."

Turkey, a NATO member with a large and modern military, has yet to define what role it intends to play in the U.S.-led coalition against the Islamic State group.

For the first time, Russia, which is in the midst of a major strategic nuclear modernization, has more deployed nuclear warheads than the United States, according to the latest numbers released by the State Department.

Russia now has 1,643 warheads deployed on intercontinental ballistic missiles, submarine-launched ballistic missiles and heavy bombers. The United States has 1,642, said the fact sheet released Wednesday

Turks are punks. They wouldn't work with us in Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom, or any other operation to date. Yes we have an air base there but **** them. I don't think they will do squat to help against Isis. All talk, no action.

Turkey 'there just to watch' in Kobane

Suruc, Turkey - As ISIL made progress towards the tomb of the Ottoman Empire founder's grandfather, Turkey this week deployed troops along its border with Syria. But locals say: "They are there just to watch."

But while Turkey gears up to play a more robust role in the US-led coalition against ISIL, it has not specifically defined what that role might be - and residents in the area say it is thus far "idle".

"Firstly the Turkish government took a long time to take any action, and now that they are taking action, it is not sufficient. They have just deployed their military to protect their own land here, but are in no way helping the Kurds in this fight," Aslan Mehmoud - a 54-year-old Syrian Kurd from Kobane, who is now living in Mursitpinar while his brothers help fight ISIL - told Al Jazeera.

Kobane: IS 'may soon take Syria-Turkey border town'

The key Syria-Turkey border town of Kobane might fall to Islamic State (IS) fighters soon, an official there has told the BBC.

A flag of Islamic State has been seen flying over a building on the eastern edge of Kobane.

The official, Idriss Nassan, confirmed IS was now in control of Mistenur, the strategic hill above the town.

Kobane has seen intense fighting over the past three days as Syrian Kurds try to defend the town.

so much for Turkey helping

Islamic State Flag Raised Above Building In Kobane, Syria

In Syria, Islamic State extremists are reported to have seized the town of Kobane, near the Turkish border.

Last week, Turkey promised to prevent the town from falling to the militants, and its parliament authorised military operations against them in Iraq and Syria.

Kobane: Civilians flee IS street-to-street fighting

Islamic State's black flag has been seen above Kobane for the first time, reports Paul Adams

Islamic State (IS) militants have entered the key Syria-Turkey border town of Kobane and are engaged in street-to-street fighting with Syrian Kurd defenders.

IS fighters entered eastern districts, raising their black flag on buildings and high ground.

Hundreds of civilians are reported to be fleeing to the Turkish border.

Taking Kobane, besieged for three weeks, would give IS control of a long stretch of the Syrian-Turkish border.

More than 160,000 Syrians, mainly Kurds, have fled the town.

Isis rolled into Kobane with tanks. Where were the air strikes? The a-10s? The Apaches?
This administration should be unleashing hell on these animals, and is instead aplogizing for Biden's stupidity. What a joke.

The standard is the standard.

President Obama stayed busy at the U.N. opening week in New York. What a schedule. On Monday he spoke on climate change, on Tuesday he spoke on terrorism, and on Wednesday he told the U.N. delegates how they can make five hundred dollars a day sitting at their computers.

President Obama at the U.N. Thursday offered to relieve some of the sanctions on Russia if Russia will agree to abide by international law. The sanctions are starting to hurt. Russia gained so much territory in the last year that Michelle Obama has just restricted its lunch menu.

Pentagon brass told the Senate U.S. troops won't be needed in Syria Friday but it will take a year to train Syrians and Iraqis. Air strikes are only ordered at night. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel confirmed in his testimony Friday that we are at war with ISIS, as far as he knows.

Not enough oil worth fighting for there

and Turkey will sit and watch

Turkey wouldn't mind if ISIS took care of their "Kurdish problem". I don't see them getting involved unless ISIS moves on them.
