In his 15 year run with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Head Coach Mike Tomlin has never posted a losing record, until 2022… says Vegas.

Prominent sports books such as Caesar’s, DraftKings and FanDuel, all have the Steelers 2022 win total over/under 7.5 (+105/-125 according to Caesar’s Sportsbook), so why the disrespect to a franchise that hasn’t had a losing record since 2003?

Well, let’s look at some factors:

  • The departure of future Hall of Fame quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.
  • The impending retirement of Steelers General Manager Kevin Colbert.
  • Will Mitch Trubisky be able to perform in Offensive Coordinator Matt Canada‘s system?
  • The other AFC North teams have made major improvements, most notable being the Cleveland Browns signing Deshaun Watson, and the Cincinnati Bengals building up their offensive line with star OT La’el Collins.

With all of the transition and change the Steelers are going through, paired with the advancements other teams in the North have made, surely you’ll win if you bet the under and the Steelers couldn’t win more than seven games this season, right?

Wrong.

Vegas forgot something when their “experts” were making the odds. The standard is the standard.

That couldn’t be more apparent than last season, when a Steelers team that had “no business being there” made the postseason. It doesn’t matter what the roster looks like, Coach T will have this team ready to go come September.

It’s easy to understand why oddsmakers have the team win total set at o/u 7.5 in a division where the Steelers will see Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, and Deshaun Watson twice a year, however, as we’ve seen time and time again, games are not won in March or April.

In addition to their regularly scheduled AFC North opponents, the Steelers will be taking on teams from the AFC East and NFC South in the 2022 regular season.

I’m no oddsmaker, and you can call me biased, but I can’t see a reason the Steelers can’t win 10+ games this season, because while Vegas and other pundits are talking about what the Steelers have lost, maybe we should take a look at what they’ve gained:

  • A young, mobile quarterback in Trubisky that spent last year learning from Josh Allen, and oh yeah, took the Chicago Bears to the postseason twice (see how they’ve done without him).
  • Improvements to the offensive line and the defense in one of the most active free agencies we’ve seen from the Steelers in years.
  • The addition of Brian Flores to the defensive coaching staff.
  • Mike Tomlin is STILL the Head Coach

We still haven’t even gotten through the NFL Draft yet. I understand that this season in Pittsburgh poses more questions than the team has had in a long time, but as I said earlier… The standard is the standard, and I expect Coach Tomlin to hold the Steelers to that as much in 2022, as he did in 2007.

Needless to say, I’ll be taking the over.

After the off-season pickups I am cautiously optimistic. Even with what could be a really tough schedule, I think I may be more optimistic about this year than last year.

It will only matter to the fans. If he goes 1-16 it will be because of the QB transition, if he goes 8-8-1 it will be one of his greatest coaching efforts because of the QB transition and if he makes the playoffs he will be touted as the greatest coach in steeler history because he did it without Ben.

8-8-1.
Never a losing season.
Greatest coach ever.

Any improvements, globally speaking, will come from the defensive side of the ball due to (hopefully) a healthy DL and the addition of Flores for whatever his position is.
Teryl Austin does not inspire confidence as DC, I think they jumped the gun and if they were going to hire Flores they should have made him DC.
The offense is probably going to suck because 1) Ben is gone, 2) we still have Canada, 3) we still have Tomlin, and 4) we will have a mostly new OL for a second year in a row.

I think if Rudy is starting- I would agree. I think Trubisky will make them more competitive under Canada’s offense and he will be best suited to execute it and manage the offense. The defense will be better than last year

Yea. 7-10. That sounds about right.

As long as Tomlin is here the Super Bowl is way out of reach. Just enjoy the trainwreck with little to no expectations.

I think Trubisky replacing Ben could likely be an improvement. Ben wasn’t very good last year and even if Trubisky isn’t any better throwing the ball, his mobility could make him a better QB than Ben was last year.

The OL should be better as well, couldn’t be worse.

Well they might asked to pass block for more than 3 seconds. Good think they paid Chucks 20 million. Not.

I think well be better than last year... but I think the teams in our division will be too could come down to injuries... this draft will be critical we need couple starters but mostly depth... I hope they don't waste a pick on a qb.

Ben didn't have it in the last half of the season. I was watching each game, including the playoff game, just knowing our team couldn't move the football effectively on offense at all.

Now they have a chance to at least build an offense that isn't one dimensional.

**Hope you like the article title. I suggested it.

I look for improvement in several areas.

1) An un-handcuffed QB at play

2) An OL that isn't made up of rookies in key places

3) O'Canada will be new and improved in his experienced 2nd year

4) DL will be more complete and defined

5) Tomlinism(s) will be alive and plentiful

6) Hopefully the draft improves upon the improvement

Salute the nation

The over/under is 7.5. I'd take the over. I think they win 8 and possibly 9 games.

I sure as hell wouldn't put money on next season, either way. This could be an exciting year or an absolute train wreck.

Defense, if we even bring back Edmunds or add Honey Badger will be improved... as long as the DL is healthy and strong. Which they should be. Heyward - Adams - Tuitt with Alualu, Loudermilk and Wormley rotating in should be much better than what we trotted out last season.

LB - holy ****. if Bush can return to form (and he should since he'll soon be one+ year removed from the ACL injury), we sport hands-down the best LB corp in the league. Watt, Highsmith, Bush and Myles ******* Jack... damn.

CB play might be on par with last year, as Levi Wallace should be at least as good as Joe was.

Offensively, the OL will be much, much improved with Green pulling splinters and Trai gone. Big Dot should return, and we got a lot of guys some live-play last season. Moore should be improved, and hopefully Chuks can too (**** off, Cooch)

QB - Trubisky gives us an athletic upgrade over Ben. Maybe not able to read the defense as well, but that remains to be seen. His best move will be putting Rudy and Dwyane on the bench with Green.

TE - Muth. 'Nuff Said

WR - Johnson will want a contract, so he'll try to ball out. Canuckian Ham needs to learn to catch the ball before trying to make the big splash play. We need another playmaker here, and that might be Miller.

RB - Najee. DAMN!

yeah, we're going over the Vegas line. Though if we don't and wind up drafting at the top of Round 1, that's fine, too.

Very interested in how Alu and Tuitt rebound. I think their play and availability can impact one way or another. Hoping they fortify to ease the possible negative outcome.
