After a career performance last night on Monday Night Football, TJ Watt is now the odds on favorite to win Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY). Watt, who was tied with Dallas Cowboys rookie Micah Parsons at +200 going into the game, is now -400 to win the award.
Watt, who has only played in 14 of the Pittsburgh Steelers 16 games this year, is having a season for the ages and is just 1 sack off of the single season record of 22.5. Watt is averaging 1.53 sacks per game which would be an NFL record if he can record one more sack on Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens. Watt should have a legitimate chance to break the record on Sunday as he had 3.5 sacks last time the Steelers beat the Ravens. The Ravens have also given up 54 sacks this season which leads the NFL, so expect Watt to continue his dominance against a backup quarterback and a beat up offensive line.
Watt has finished second in DPOY voting the past two seasons, but it seems like his hard work will finally pay off this year. Watt has become the premier pass rusher in the NFL and his impact on the Steelers season should not be underplayed. In games that Watt has finished the game, the Steelers are 8-2. In games that Watt has either not played or left the game early with injury, the Steelers have a record of 0-5-1. It’s hard to imagine the Steelers defense without Watt and he should finally get the respect he deserves by winning DPOY for the 2021-2022 season.
