What is the point of Jonnu Smith?

Over the past 5 games ( and i went back 5 because he had an ok game vs the chargers and i didnt want to bias him low) he has had
153 snaps
14 targets
8 catches
56 yards
0 tds

Freiermuth in the same 5 games

136 snaps
11 targets
10 catches
98 yards
2 tds

Both are not great blockers... Smith is thought of as worse than Muth in that area, so that cant be it...

Its maybe the most pointless guy on O... less productive than either of the other two TEs but still a ton of use...
 
2024 was an outlier for Jonnu.

His first 7 seasons he averaged vs this year.
31 receptions vs. 30 receptions
346 yards vs. 190 yards
11.2 YPC vs. 6.3 YPC
3 TDs vs. 2 TDs

He's right on par for his career averages outside of depth of target, which is a product of Tomlin's offense.

Some expected Jonnu to step in and produce like a WR2. That projection was wild at the time, and have since proven to be mistaken.

I wouldn’t call the Minkah trade a failure, but the Steelers also haven’t consistently put Minkah in the situations that allowed him to thrive as a playmaker. Still, Ramsey has been solid. He's helped the Steelers win games and brings a physical presence to the secondary.

Jonnu doesn't have a meaningful role on this team. Freiermuth is better in every way and doesn't get enough snaps.

there was a clip last season that showed Muth wasn't running good routes. That he was getting pushed a yard or two off, and then wasn't completing his route. I'm not a Muth hater, so that was a bit of an eye opener for me. I specifically remember how the route was supposed to be up the hashmark - just inside - but he was on the opposite side of the hash mark. Doesnt sound like a lot, but remember, passing windows in the NFL are small. Has he cleaned that up? I don't know since our passing game is a complete cluster.

298 yards cost Steelers 16.5 million

$55,369 PER YARD

Pickens
535 yards cost Dallas 1 million

$1,800 PER YARD

Pickens had more production in 2 games than a combined 15 from these overpaid bums.
For a fraction of the price.
Been saying Kahn is Trash since he got here, he's living up to it.

If they had a true WR2, Metcalf would look much better. Teams only need to worry about doubling him. No one else on the team remotely deserves to be doubled. Heck, they could let one of our WR's go uncovered and the Steelers would still not connect on a throw and catch.
 
Interesting, but we gave Muth an extension. I’m not doubting you but wondering why the hell they would extend the guy if he’s not a good route runner. We already know he’s not a great blocker.
I have a feeling he’s going to be traded in the off season. He and maybe Highsmith.

Total waste! He’s a high end number two and low end number one imo.
Far too much money! They have to be regretting that one.

Agreed some what, but the same as people say about Watt, the way he's paid he should be beating doubles, Metcalf being paid as the 4th highest paid WR, he should be doing more. Although in this system I don't necessarily agree with either, but Dionte had 107 catches, 1200 yards and 8 TD's in 2021 with no other weapons.

If pickens played here he'd have 1/4th his totals there and probably would have demanded a trade at the deadline anyway...
 
Jonnu did well in Miami when the primary targets were Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill. Defenses had to account for those 2 killers. There is no threat to anyone’s secondary with just DK and a bunch of guys who can’t get open.
 
What's the deal with Jonnu?!? Oh yeah, without him who'd run that crucial 3-yard out? Huh???
 
From what I’m seeing the top reasons for Smith

1) to be another option in the run sweep/ behind Los screen game
2) to suck at blocking
3) take snaps from Muth (he must be in a doghouse) he ain’t great but he fits better than JS
4) to massively overpay a guy and waste cap space that could be rolled over rather than simply pissing it away

He’d be a good fit on a team with an NFL offense, sadly this is not the Steelers way.
Not quite sure other than past acquaintances with AS why the Steelers wanted him in that trade.

Article on the homepage said Tomlin stated that Muth sucks at man coverage and is good in zone coverage. That is the reaaon.

Metcalf was the #2 last year and wasn't significantly more productive than he is this year.

Everyone we have sucks at man because every D knows we arent gonna throw inside routes so they pretty much dont pull coverages off of each other

Also their concept of beating man seems to be just outrunning it... which is why they have the faster Smith playing in those situations.. and it doesnt work...


We have gone through this time and again.. having specific plays for specific personnel tips off Defenses that use in game analysts or are just really good at film...
 
Smith is that toy that looked great in the commercials but sucked when you got it home and out of the box. Muth is stuck behind Kahn and Tomlin's stupid choices. They think they have to play the with new toy even though it sucks.
