Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it the goal of every DC to get the opposition into 3rd and long? im assuming that is because 3rd and long gives the defense the advantage... yet for some reason the Steelers seem to struggle in that situation. Why are guys so wide open consistently when we have them in 3rd & long?

Should always be advantage defense on third and long, that was the main issue we couldn't stop them when they needed to, because some bonehead penalties and letting them do whatever they pleased. Hope the situations get rectified by next season..

The key to a 3-4 Defense is OLB's who can get to the QB. When our best OLB is almost 37 years old and we have 2 guys on the roster in Jarvis Jones & Jason Worilds who IMO are not starting material at OLB in the NFL...it's blatantly obvious where our weaknesses are on this defense! If the Steelers stick with a 3-4 Defense they need an impact OLB who can come in and start immediately next season. Worilds should not be retained he's too much money and Jarvis Jones just IMO doesn't have it.

With the emergence of Williams and Spence on the inside the Steelers might be better off putting Shazier at OLB.

Regardless the Steelers still need to load up more at OLB if they continue with the 3-4.

Getting off the field on 3rd and longs has always seemed to be Lebeau's achillies heel with his defensive strategy.

I've been asking this for years, so many times we get teams into 3rd and forever, and then BAM, first down. A few years back there was even a stat where the Steelers were the WORST in the league on 3rd and (like plus 12 I think it was?) even though we had the number one overall defense. It baffles ALL of us when we are watching games.

not when he had solid pressure from his OLBs......

See the Dick Lebeau thread. It's called prevent defense. It prevents you from winning. When you play 10 yards off the ball it only takes 1 quick move to be open in the zone.

Think that we play too far back and cant tackle or have the speed to stop the guy before he runs 20 yrds

Almost every time, they had the receivers clear out and leave the middle open to Daniels.

Where was Moats tonight?

If it is 3rd and 15. Lebeau's philosophy is to allow the catch anywhere inside the 15 yards and make the tackles. We do not make the tackles.

This hits the nail right on the head. No puzzle here. I'd rather live & die by the sword (send the house & blitz with 6+) than rush only 3 or 4 and give the QB an eternity to find an open receiver.

I would rather put 8 in the box and bring a **** load of pressure and get torched because they picked up the blitz then play coverage and have the guy hit a crossing route and watch Mitchell take a ****** angle and have him make it.

Mitchell might be the shittiest long term signing this team has ever done. And that sucks, because almost everyone here loved the signing, me included.

I guess sometimes everyone misses.

Oh, and I agree, this death by 1,000 tiny paper cuts sucks compared to bringing the house and killing the ******* qb most times, and every now and then getting that long pass for a TD. I'll take the Rex Ryan "bring em all and see what happens" over that every day of the week, and three ******* times on Sundays.
