OK, real quick. I've been a long time reader of this board and the discussions about how we are playing now has every Steeler fan concerned regardless if it's only two games into the season. My question is when are we going to start delivering hits like the ones our offense has been taking? I've watched all the games this year like everyone else (preseason) included but yet have I seen one of our defensive players really "bring it", you know, a real snot knocker. Maybe we just don't have that caliber player putting in work like that. Troy used to be that guy but he's pulled up some due to the numerous concussions received throughout his storied career. Clark is gone but at a time, he could deliver that hit that would get the team fired up. However, he's in the same category as Troy when it comes to those blows...good that he's been removed to DC. Harrison was a beast as we all know but those were better times. Who do we have to bring the pain like that? Sometimes big hits from the D are needed to set the tempo of the game or at least show an identity. We need to get back to that approach to establish what type of team we are or at least used to be....TRADITION. So what if we get flagged for 15 yards, the opposition will know we ain't bullshittin. Ask Ben about that hit in the 1st quarter, he'll probably tell you. It shook us up and fired the Ravens up for the rest of the game. Who do we have that can bring it?

They won't give Joey a hat.

We ain't got ****.

We won't be hitting until we replace our weak ***** linebackers

With new guys and guys who just aren't as good as we're used to , it's hard enough for them to be in the correct position , let alone hit someone hard.

They're more worried about ******* up than hitting someone.

look back to two 15 yard penalties in the game when the ravens were in steelers territory. They scored. hitting did not help.

There is no room in the game for hard hits. They are gradually being removed a little more every year.

Our non-wrapping safety who is lately out of position more often than not and who has lost a couple of steps can be replaced quicker. It's time to find ways to get Shamarko on the field. Even if that means less playing time for Troy.

Or for our big-money free agent who has done nothing positive in the preseason or regular season.

Which one? Take your pick of:

Thomas
Michell
Blount

Oh, you said the big money guy. So you must mean Mike "wrong angle" Mitchell.

They need to learn how to tackle first.

What good are hard hits and splash plays when your defense is giving up big chunks of yards?

all of our hitting is done on the tackle dummies and left there, per Fuhrer Goodell's magical slide-rules of levying fines.

Exactly.

One must walk before he can run.

They cannot even tackle right now, and people are complaining about a lack hitting.

The Steelers are light and very finesse on defense.

I think the talent is there......these guys just need snaps. You can see the hesitation. They are young guys.....give it time.

You must hold a very broad definition of young. Shazier and Jones are the only starters I'd consider young (in the league less than three seasons), and Jones is about three years older than the average second year NFL player.

I think the most likely issue is that they're just not very good.

I personally think it's time to put all the younger players on the field. I'd rather have Tuitt and Big Dan on the line with Shamarko at FS than watch them give up big yardage while learning that to watch Cam Thomas, McClendon, and Mitchell do the same and should know better how to play.

Actually the "unintentional" crown of the helmet hit on Ben in the opening minutes of the 1st quarter by the Rats actually wasn't a bad idea. Take the 15 yards and now the QB knows he's in for a long day with the likely possibility he's going to get blasted a few more times as well!
Must have worked, Ben sucked the whole freakin' game!

I can't say I disagree with you about the younger players but you might want to watch the run play Tunch has on the illustrator at chalk talk. He shows a big run by the Ravens and who was out of position and allowed the play to happen. Hint it was one of the young guys, Shazier.

Even with the rookie and first year player mistakes it might be beneficial to have the guys learn to play together quickly in the long run.

You're going to get some of that with younger players. But, they will (hopefully) improve with time/repetition in the defense. What worries me more is all the missed tackles by the VETERANS. Shazier had two missed tackles in the Ravens game. Two of the other guys had something like 9 and 5 respectively. Hint it was two of the "older" guys, Timmons and Troy.

You can't have that type of execution from the guys who are supposed to be leaders and teachers on this defense.

its time in the nickel they put Troy back at LB next to him should be Shazier and put Timmons Worlids overload 1 side with Worlids on the weak side.

Because every time they hit hard there is a penalty and the players get fined ..
