They are principles of a "liberal democracy", which describes most of the western and industrialized worlds. Before the term "liberal" became pejorative, it had meaning that was relevant in the way that Maher used it. In many regards, including the above exchange, Maher's ideals align with that of libertarians. His head is ****** up because he thinks that governments need a bigger role in generating freedom for people, which is retarded, but his words with regard to Islam ring very true to my ears.
There is no reason to reject Maher fully, especially because he has reach and resonates with many people. It would make far more sense to agree with his positions that make sense and disagree when they don't....just like he did with Jennifer Garner's idiot hubby.
