For the first time in almost 20 years, the Pittsburgh Steelers are facing a quarterback change. Ben Roethlisberger has officially announced his retirement and his departure from Pittsburgh leaves the Steelers with a huge decision ahead of them as they look to begin their post-Ben Roethlisberger era.

This has never been a problem for the Steelers. For nearly two whole decades, Roethlisberger has been their number one quarterback with no questions asked, but now, they face a big decision regarding what path they want to pursue going into the 2022-2023 NFL season. What would this mean for Steelers and their NFL stats? Should they enter rebuild mode and draft a rookie quarterback in the 2022 NFL Draft? Or should they pursue a more experienced quarterback who is looking to relocate?

That is where Aaron Rodgers comes in.

Aaron Rodgers as a Possible Solution?

Aaron Rodgers is a veteran quarterback, and probably one of the best quarterbacks of all time. It’s no secret that as of late, Rodgers has been butting heads with the Green Bay Packers, the team he has played for since 2005. He has reportedly requested for a trade and he has also openly criticized the organization and how it operates. After Rodgers and the Packers lost in the divisional round of the playoffs to the San Francisco 49ers earlier this past postseason, a new conversation has emerged concerning Rodgers’ future with the franchise.

Whether or not the Steelers actually decide to pursue Rodgers is a different question. Would it be a good idea for Rodgers to join the Pittsburgh crew? Even though the stats suggest that the Steelers are the second-most likely team to pursue Rodgers, no, it would not be a good idea. And we’ll tell you why.

There is no doubt that Aaron Rodgers is a great quarterback, but he hasn’t been a great team player this season. That’s a kind way to say it.

On the field, he is effective. Off the field, he’s kind of a nutcase. That’s all we’ll say about his off-the-field behavior.

To put it simply, Rodgers is not a good fit for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Their best option is to go through a rebuild period and craft a team that does not have to rely on a star player to do well.

The NFL is in sort of a transitional period when it comes to their quarterbacks. We are slowly seeing a lot of veteran, older quarterbacks like Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger, and Aaron Rodgers be outplayed by the younger ones, like Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, and Joe Burrow. There is a new wave of young quarterbacks who are anxious and able to win the important games, and it seems like we have hit the point where youth is outplaying experience.

The age of young quarterbacks and young teams are upon us, and the Steelers need to take the initiative to rebuild their team post-Big Ben and create a new team built around younger players, and most importantly, a young quarterback.

You can only go with the pieces available. If he is available you try to get him. If he goes elsewhere which I suspect he will you go to plan B. Denver and 49ers I would think have a more realistic chance to get him, maybe even Tampa Bay.

I think you have to have your options on the table and quickly persue them. I am asking them to go against the norm though. Which makes that pipedream even less of a possibility.

I personally have heard all the reasons not to bring him in but none of them trump my number one reason. Which is he would be the best possible upgrade on the shelf. Unrealistic as it is.

Anytime you have an opportunity to get a franchise you try to get them if you are one of the teams without.

Hopefully we can get plan B or C.Try hard to avoid plan F.

If the Steelers bring him in, at least he won’t be bringing that socialist wackjob split tail, he was engaged to, with him.

Normally i would agree with this but not for a player who is turning 39 this year, is a serious diva, VERY VERY expensive and would require a lot of draft capital to acquire (plus its been said that he will insist on the team he goes to acquiring Davante Adams. You would have to gut the team and the future to get this guy and how long will he play? he openly flirts with retirement regularly now. You don't invest that much in a guy that might play for a year, maybe two or three at best. and especially not with as many holes on as there are on this team. IT simply not a viable option in all reality.

I'll give you five reasons why Aaron Rodgers would not be a good pick at QB:
1 - Kendrick Green
2 - Trai Turner
3 - Kevin Dotson
4 - Dan Moore Jr
5 - Chukwuma Okorafor

The worst OL in the NFL would get him killed through a season. Rodgers would get hurt or demand a trade before the end of the season.
Think about it, why would any top free agent QB in the NFL come to this team and get beat up every week ?

We either :
1 - go with what we have or acquire a 2nd rate QB (Trubisky, or Minschew) AND get the BEST OL personnel in the draft and a free agent or two
2 - draft a QB in the 1st or 2nd - sit him for the year - or for 6-8 games after our poor OL gets Rudolf and Haskins hurt.

They are not bringing Rodgers to Pittsburgh pure and simple. The draft capital would be much too expensive of which we need to fill holes. Plus on top of that, his cap hit would be significant which hurts us trying to sign quality FA's. This would set us back even further and I have to believe even Art II would never allow it.
What scares the hell out of me are the rumors of trading up for a project with potential in Malek Willis which means most likely trading our second this year and maybe second or third next year and that truly scares me. If Tomlin does indeed manage to convince Art II this guy could be our savior, this could also set us back even more so.

Rodgers is a front running ***** who is not clutch . We need a young QB to grow with not and old guy that will gut our already talent depleted lineup. Hard pass.

Not to mention Rodgers is not going to be happy with the way things run here either. He wants to have a lot of say in everything. Ben won two superbowls and didn't get that authority. Rodgers ***** *** will be on twitter and every news outlet bitching after the first week. Can't stand him!

39 years old. Now if this team was just stacked across the board on both sides of the ball, had great coaching and qb was the only missing piece? Then sure a short contract would make sense.

The Steelers don't have any of that.

There are a lot of really good responses in this thread. Thank you.

Frankly, everyone needs to just stop bringing this up for discussion at all. I have no problem with Mr. Rogers, but he's not going to play for the Steelers...PERIOD. Why? Every reason he wants out of GB is also in play in Pittsburgh, plus every reason stated above. The Steelers can't afford him AND the OL that would be needed to keep him alive for 17 games. Hell, just resign Ben for another year if you want an older QB who doesn't have an OL to protect him and a bottom of the league running game.

Fix the OL and other positions. Use the QB's we have and draft one in 2023. I can deal with sucking for a year to do it correctly. I can't stand duct tape jobs on anything. And usually, duct tape jobs on anything other than heating ducts wind up being expensive.

Literally the only reason Rodgers wouldn't be a good fit in Pittsburgh is:
1. Trade cost
2. Cap hit

There are literally no football reasons why Rodgers wouldn't fit be a terrific fit here. I can't stand the guy, but you don't even need a full hand to count how many QBs are better than him.

And....
3. His age

If he was 30 I'd say go for it.

He has shown absolutely no signs of slowing down. And the way the league protects their QBs now, no reason to think he is at the end. Or even close to it. Not unreasonable to think the guy couldn't go another 3 to 5.

Pittsburgh media: bens too old and expensive and needs to retire

Also Pittsburgh media: ooohhhh they should get Rodgers because he is a year and a half younger and probably twice as pricey

What happened was when Rodgers first starter the leaving green bay rumors, people looked at the Steelers cap before they resigned Watt and ignored the fact they were going to have to resign or fill 16 or 17 spots plus extend Fitzpatrick and thought it would be a fit money wise… as that shrank, they haven’t let go of the idea that we could afford him and to build up thecteam aroundvhim
