For the first time in almost 20 years, the Pittsburgh Steelers are facing a quarterback change. Ben Roethlisberger has officially announced his retirement and his departure from Pittsburgh leaves the Steelers with a huge decision ahead of them as they look to begin their post-Ben Roethlisberger era.
This has never been a problem for the Steelers. For nearly two whole decades, Roethlisberger has been their number one quarterback with no questions asked, but now, they face a big decision regarding what path they want to pursue going into the 2022-2023 NFL season. What would this mean for Steelers and their NFL stats? Should they enter rebuild mode and draft a rookie quarterback in the 2022 NFL Draft? Or should they pursue a more experienced quarterback who is looking to relocate?
That is where Aaron Rodgers comes in.
Aaron Rodgers is a veteran quarterback, and probably one of the best quarterbacks of all time. It’s no secret that as of late, Rodgers has been butting heads with the Green Bay Packers, the team he has played for since 2005. He has reportedly requested for a trade and he has also openly criticized the organization and how it operates. After Rodgers and the Packers lost in the divisional round of the playoffs to the San Francisco 49ers earlier this past postseason, a new conversation has emerged concerning Rodgers’ future with the franchise.
Whether or not the Steelers actually decide to pursue Rodgers is a different question. Would it be a good idea for Rodgers to join the Pittsburgh crew? Even though the stats suggest that the Steelers are the second-most likely team to pursue Rodgers, no, it would not be a good idea. And we’ll tell you why.
There is no doubt that Aaron Rodgers is a great quarterback, but he hasn’t been a great team player this season. That’s a kind way to say it.
On the field, he is effective. Off the field, he’s kind of a nutcase. That’s all we’ll say about his off-the-field behavior.
To put it simply, Rodgers is not a good fit for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Their best option is to go through a rebuild period and craft a team that does not have to rely on a star player to do well.
The NFL is in sort of a transitional period when it comes to their quarterbacks. We are slowly seeing a lot of veteran, older quarterbacks like Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger, and Aaron Rodgers be outplayed by the younger ones, like Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, and Joe Burrow. There is a new wave of young quarterbacks who are anxious and able to win the important games, and it seems like we have hit the point where youth is outplaying experience.
The age of young quarterbacks and young teams are upon us, and the Steelers need to take the initiative to rebuild their team post-Big Ben and create a new team built around younger players, and most importantly, a young quarterback.
