Diontae Johnson is currently under contract for one more year with the Pittsburgh Steelers and will be paid if nothing changes $2.79 million dollars for the 2022 season. The Cleveland Browns addressed their hole at receiver by trading a 5th and 6th round pack to the cash strapped Dallas Cowboys for a Pro Bowl wide receiver, Amari Cooper. They will have to pay him $20 million dollars per year for the privilege of watching him fill the Odell Beckham Jr. roll, maybe they will actually utilize him in the offense, but I digress. Topflight wide receivers cost money, a lot of money.

Since 2019, the stats for Amari Cooper vs Diontae Johnson per Pro Football Reference:

Cooper is 27 and has been in the league for seven seasons. He will be entering year three of a $100 million dollar contract. Diontae Johnson is entering his fourth season and bear in mind his rookie year was stunted by having to collaborate with the inexperienced Mason Rudolph/Devlin Hodges tandem. He is trending up with 88 catches in 2020 to 107 in 2021. Cooper’s career high in catches is 92. It was rumored by Andrew Fillipponi that Johnson would seek a five-year deal in the Cooper Kupp/Stefon Diggs range which is $15-$16 million per year. Based on trending production, that is a hometown discount the Steelers should be eager to jump into.

Perhaps the transition to find Kevin Colbert’s replacement is slowing negotiations, but this should be a priority for Pittsburgh. Diontae Johnson worked hard to improve his game and made drastic improvements each year in the league. No matter who the signal caller is in Pittsburgh in 2022, they need his production and ability to separate. The Steelers drafted him and yes, they were burned in paying Antonio Brown, but Hines Ward was worth a second contract and became the leader of the receiver room. JuJu Smith-Schuster does not have the talent of Diontae Johnson, but Diontae is not seemingly living for the amusement of all on social media.

A hardnosed, blue-collar number one who is not a diva complaining about touches or telling everyone out there he is underpaid for his production, sounds a lot more like Hines Ward than Antonio Brown to me. It also sounds like exactly the kind of guy Pittsburgh should pay. Diontae Johnson may not be the number one receiver in football, but he is the perfect number one for the Steelers.

I don't think the transition with GMs is slowing down anything. It seems like the Steelers always get their long-term deals done during the summer. Maybe they draft a guy in the first round this year and they decide to let DJ walk and run with a young guy and Claypool. There are a lot of variables ahead. In fact, I think the top priority should be to get the Fitzpatrick contract finished because that will be the most expensive and show the team what they have to work with this year and in future years in terms of cap space.

I just don’t think he’s a #1 they targeted him 170 times pumped his numbers up but he’s just average. He had a HOF qb throwing at him… blab blab blab…I’m broken record guy I know but I’d get a stud for the #1 like a Debo or cooper and pay em big money.. not johnson. He’d make good trade bait thou..
