The 2020 offseason was one to remember for the Pittsburgh Steelers. They had holes to fill on both sides of the line of scrimmage and were coming off of a season where they were 29th in the NFL in both scoring and rushing offensively. The Steelers spent their first four draft picks on players on the offensive side of the ball. Two of which, had stellar rookie campaigns and should give Steelers fans reason for hope and excitement for years to come.

1) Najee Harris

Najee Harris had a tremendous rookie season. He set a new Steelers rookie rushing record with 1,200 yards, breaking Franco Harris‘ record which was set in 1972. Harris also managed to score 7 touchdowns and started all 17 games. It seemed as if the offense was formed around Harris from the beginning as he ended the season 2nd in the NFL with 307 rushing attempts. All of this was accomplished while having to run behind a struggling offensive line and an aging Ben Roethlisberger. The Steelers expect this offense will to continue to rely heavily on Harris and if the Steelers give him help on the line, the future for Harris looks very bright.

2) Pat Freiermuth

Pat Freiermuth had a slow start to his rookie season after only being targeted 11 times in his first 4 games. But after tight end Eric Ebron went down with a season ending injury, weeks 5 through 9 Freiermuth was targeted 31 times and hauled in 3 touchdowns. He began to play an important role later in the season when it came to crucial times in games. Steelers fans won’t forget his incredible catch against the Cleveland Browns which helped lead them to a big victory on the road. Freiermuth finished the season with 7 touchdowns and 497 yards, which is an impressive rookie season considering he wasn’t the number one tight end early in the year. It seems as if the Steelers have finally found their replacement for Heath Miller and can expect to continue to yell “MUUUTH” at Heinz Field for many years to come.

The Steelers still have many holes to fill heading into this offseason, but fans did see some incredible young talent displayed on the field and have a reason to be optimistic about the future stars of the franchise. We can certainly say in the running back and tight end positions the Steelers “have their guy” for the future, and with a top 20 draft choice and a projected over $40 million in cap space, the front office can definitely assemble a winning team next year regardless of who is playing the quarterback position.
