You have to announce an onside kick before doing it now

the kickoff rules in general they approved are quite...um...different. Not only are onside kicks dead, so is hangtime and end zone kicks (unless it bounces in play first) as nobody is going to want to give the receiving team the ball at the 35. Up men on both sides can not move until the ball is touched or hits the ground. That is going to draw penalties early in season I would imagine. There will be a big uptick in kicks returned and, i would expect, an uptick in kicks returned for big gains and scores.

EDIT: Kick off rule

This rule change kind of mirrors what the XFL did on their kick offs. The pre-new rule kick-off was boring as hellA, this will add a little excitement. I highly doubt it will result im TDs every return, but it will add in that they have a 50/50 chance of bettering that 25yard line start that became near the normal previously.

Initially, I like the change, but until we see it in action for a game or 3, that’s when my jury will rule.

Recent rule changes made the KO nothing more than extra bathroom or dog walking time - a spacer between ads. I had gotten to the point of "just get rid of the play". Hopefully this will make the KO relevant again.

No element of surprise now that you have to tell the world before you attempt an on sides kick. No element of surprise going for a 2 point conversion. NFL doesn't like surprises. Scripted plays only.

Kinda screwy but can’t be any worse than practically eliminating what was the most exciting play in football.

That makes it simpler for the betting algorithms because there will be time to adjust rather than a surprise.

This is the number 1 driving force.

Which XFL team had the best special teams unit and why haven't we hired their special teams coach to bolster our staff? I'd love to have a coach who understands how to maximize field position with this new kickoff rule.

I sometimes wonder if what they are doing is making football so that women can be in the league as players.

They are trying sooo hard to set up flag football as a thing... I am going to laugh so hard when they finally announce that and viwership drops to one third of what it was or less

The reality is that the old school die hards drive regular season ratings... and they know those viewers wont really adapt to that kind of huge change, so they are gradually stepping them towards it...

It wont work. Offshoots of main sports can become very popular to play, but none has really caught on with the general public...
