And here's the issue with Tomlin

Smith was hired. I took a wait and see approach on how the offense would be run. Ended up all but the same as the previous OCs unfortunately.

That’s because regardless of the OC, it’s always going to be about running the Tomlin scheme.

No middle use of the field, and TEs are for blocking.

The 31st pass D, and got a higher up job, incredible, but he says cute quips so....

Look, I'm not Tomlin apologist by any means, but everyone latches on to that ONE stat from his one year as Minnesota's DC, and ignore everything else. They were 31st in total passing yards, but were 19th in net yards per attempt, we were 17th that year. They were 1st in rushing defense, in all categories, giving up less than 1,000 yards on the season and only 2.8 yards per attempt. They were 14th in pts per game, and 8th in total defense.

The year before he got there, they were 20th in pts, 19th in rush, 22 in pass, and 21st in overall. It was also well known that he was able to relate to any member of the staff or team the same way, whether it was the GM, the water boy, the kicker, or staff on the team plane, he treated them the same. It wasn't like they just grabbed him for no reason at all. He was a young, upcoming coach.

18 years later, and his message and style has grown stale. Doesn't mean he was trash from the moment they looked at him.

I’m not sure you want to look at Belichick as a positive example for a coaching tree. His have been disasters.

That misses the point, though.

It's not so much about what a coach does once being hired away. It's about how teams wanting that coach reflects on how well coached and prepared his former team is viewed by the league.

Teams wanted Belichick's and Cowher's assistants because their teams were almost always regarded among the best coached in the league.

I have been watching the feedback from local Pittsburgh bloggers, sports writers ,Tv sports and the reaction to Tomlin/Rooney wanting Rogers. No one has said it is a good move and it is said every day. Do we really think Tomlin or this Rooney cares. If Tomlin wants Rogers the money will flow and we all ask why. Tomlin has been here so long so comfortable in his position, that Rooney will never let him go till Tomlin wants to go. He runs the show listen to Najae comment about leadership and no one to go to. This is this head coach style, the organization sees no benefit in bringing in coaches that can improve a player's skill, Tomlin does not allow anyone to get more press than himself. He may be a motivator, players coach but he is happy, and this Rooney is happy with middle of the road wins .

If it ends up being true that Art is happy with average results, he better prepare for more fan uprisings. It's his damn fault.

Tomlin's to do list:

1. Hit the 194 to win mark(regular season)
2. Hit the 200 win mark(regular season)
3. Continue bringing home the Tomlinships. 18 and counting!!!!

I think 1 and 2 is why he got the 3 year extension.

Very short sighted of ownership. Just my opinion as I’d like to know where the post season success is when it comes to all those Tomlinships………….

Doesn’t matter one bit of w / l if the post season isn’t a little successful.

Well I guess 3 postseason wins in 16 seasons is good enough.
We won 4 postseason games in 2005 alone, LOL.

My point exactly Coryea. And with the newer PO format, there is an extra chance of a win……. Something the Tomlinships wouldn’t be able to take advantage of.

Look at his postseason record pre and post 2011.

Another Tomlin thread...

Why ??? I neeeeeeed to know.....

That is Mr. Clowney to you.

What does his post season record have to do with his year as Minnesota's DC? Did you even read my post or what I was responding to?

That run would have ended in Indy had Tomlin been the coach, we would have hid on offense and fallen behind 21-0.

You're right: he wasn't pure trash from day 1. He had some skills, I was a big fan during his early years in Pgh. But Rooney stuck with him for too long. He was no football god as he thought he was. There was never any special skill or talent or knowledge. He was likeable until he was exposed as just some guy who lucked out to be in the place he was in. The Clown-lin experiment should have been shut down in 2015 or so. And 10 years later, here we still are; a once- proud franchise with nothing but echoes from the past, that is all.
