Mason Rudolph

He could not beat an 0-8 team...He was a pretty highly touted 3rd Round Draft pick & it was his chance to shine & show Steeler Nation what he had...I do remember he could of won it a few times late in the game & OT, or so it seemed, & he did not. He was the QB that day & that was a tough tie to swallow, this FORUM was lit......

The Lions were Ohhhh for the season....

But let me 'splain my TAKE...

Back-up QB's are paid to come in & win the game...He came in against a 2021 Lions team who were 0-8 & didn't leave with a win, but rather a tie...That tie loomed large that year too...It was a terrible tie. A back-up QB who doesn't win, doesn't lose, but rather ties? No bueno...

In spite of that untimely tie, the legend of Rudy continues to grow & includes the epic Myles Garrett helmet incident & a BAD AZZ 3 game win streak to get us to the play-offs...

No player is paid to win games. That is not specified in their contracts.

But if the backup quarterback is paid to come in and win games then Rudy did what he was paid to do.
He won 4 straight prior to leaving for Tennessee.

Why is that tie game vs Detroit remembered more often than his 4 straight wins that got us into the playoffs?

Sure, Rudy’s career could be defined by the Detroit game, but not for the reasons you stated.

It was a tie, hence Rudy has shown to be neither great or terrible, good or bad, but right in the middle.

SPORTS is defined by Wins & Losses...Pichers & QB's handle the ball on EVERY OFFENSIVE play, so yes, individual performances for pitchers & QB's have a huge impact on the outcome of any game...People get fired, cut, waived, traded, booed, & even receive death threats over wins & losses...
No one gets cut for good individual performances during a loss. And only people who don’t understand sports send death threats because of it.
Win/loss records have EVERYTHING to do with individual performances, especially for QB's & Pitchers...
So by your logic Nolan Ryan was average, Skenes sucks, and Matthew Stafford is a 💩 quarterback. 😂
Speaking of Ryan

He could not control his Fastball the first 10 years of his career & he gave up a grip of walks, which didn't help him much early on as those Angels teams were really bad. Looking at his life-time stats, Ryan's All-Time WHIP 1.247 is #314 All-Time...Wow...#314....I think his WHIP may be why he lost so much
He also had a career 3.2 ERA and 107 losses where he gave up 2 or fewer runs.

👍 too young to remember much of Ryan’s career live. Mostly from watching espn classics as a youth.

Jim Kelly and Dan Marino should never have been drafted. Losers

Rudy is what he is, which is an adequate backup QB.
All 32 teams had a chance to sign him and the market says he's a backup worth $4 million a year.
My knock on him in years past is that when he had to come in for Ben he did okay but when he knew he was starting and had all week to think about it, then he didn't do so well.

One thing though……………. They all ate BACON.!!!

That’s the thing about BACON, both winners and losers can enjoy it, BACON is not discriminatory !

Technically you are correct when looking at the record books, but let’s take a little closer look.

1st off, the Bills were beatable that day of play.

Everyone talks about making the playoffs and catching the fire. “A team on fire” can go a long ways.

Rudy put this team on fire the three previous games…………… literally everything, score / play-changes / fellow players / scheme altering / total on fire team, including the Tomlin.

What do you do with a team on fire……, you don’t change things up and you ride that fire……………

Buffalo game, 1st thing the Tomlin does is revert back to his old ways, dousing the fire to nothing, even the Tomlin chair seat was not hot.

Did Rudy really lose3 that game……….yes, but to no help from the coaching staff who actually lost that game before it even started.

True, I remember in the Bills game Tomlin reverted back to playing not to lose instead of playing to win. His playoff record speaks for itself.

The Bills came out like it was a track meet going up and down the field like Jamaican bobsledders in the cold while Tomlin employed the 1967 Ice Bowl strategy out of the gate. It was over before it started.

I’m not saying Rudolph would beat Rodgers out. In fact at 41 my guess is A-A-Ron still is better than Rudolph. But I also don’t just let Rodgers not earn it. Make him work for it. Even if you hate Rudolph you can’t say he doesn’t try hard. Let him put pressure on Rodgers to give his all.

Yep. Just like they made Russ "earn it" over Pickett.

We used to call Cowher "Marty Schottenheimer Jr." but it looks more and more like Shades is the real Marty Jr. who BTW is the only head coach with over 200 wins not in the Hall of Fame because of his lousy playoff record.

Russ would only sign with the Steelers if he was guaranteed the starting gig. Hence Pickett asked to be traded.
