Initial Thoughts on bengal Game

I agree, and always have that the coaching isn't great. I think it is more a combination of things than a lot of you do, however. I just don't think schemes are gonna do much when your best, most highly paid players can't beat a 2nd year OT or a new starting OG or C or whatever he was in other cases. Your highly paid corners can't keep Chase around, hell, even 10 catches.

Too draw the "it's mostly on the coaching" to it's natural conclusion, is that in all cases, or only the Tomlin Steelers? Gotta be consistent. Because if everything is mostly on the coaches, in the '70s apparently the Steelers didn't have the best talent, it was the steady, constant genius of Chuck Noll and his staff that drove them to victory. I wonder what some of those players would say about that argument.
It's on the players too for sure, but when your Head Coach is running his mouth before the season even starts saying this will be a historic defense, and we can cover anybody, it's no shock that's he's going to take all the criticism, as he should. Show me another Head Coach that would talk like that coming off the embarrassing *** kicking they took in the playoffs.

On the positive side, the ASmith TE offense was moving the ball well. We could have an offense that dominates in a league that has become smaller. We play smart we can control the clock, control the game.

This would minimize the opportunities for the Tomlin/Austin D to **** it all up.

Well the ******* owner would be the obvious person to demand how he wants his team run.
I do not get this fascination with Tomlin like he’s
un -replaceable.
I’m so checked out on this organization I don’t even want to waste the time following them any longer. I’m just burned out finally!

Start viewing them as your employees

It makes it more tolerable when the very predictable let downs happen

I can predict fairly accurately what these Steelers will do and when they will lay an absolute egg.

Made just over $900 last night on the over, a couple prop bets and one bet I shouldn’t mention…sometimes it is too easy…my boss better give me an extra day off for all the free money I handed him yesterday (fingers crossed on that one)

0-6 now on TNF at division rivals and counting for NHALS mediocre Mike

I don't entirely disagree, but one cannot completely insulate coaching from player performance when we see these types of performances as often as we have over at least a decade.

Leadership and preparation from the coaching is a big part of it, IMO.

I'd argue Noll was a big reason why they had the best talent.

There were others involved like Bill Nunn and Dan Rooney, but Noll did his part.

Well, he's an idiot. But we know that. Still, players still gotta make plays.

Agreed, but it also helps when you're put in a position to succeed, like it was obvious no one could cover Chase, as a Coach do you just say oh well we have no one that can cover that guy, or do you try something different to help your players, jam him, with constant help, bracket him, something.

Wouldn’t you like just one of the reporters at the after game press conference to ask him directly about his “ historic defense “ that he’s assembled? Using his quotes. I’ve never heard a reporter ash him to his face mentioning that they are the league’s highest paid defense by quite a margin and then quote the numbers.

I'll believe the offense after I see it the next 4 games. The only thing that looked worse than the Cinci defense last night was our miserable excuse for a defense. Right now I think our offense would be nothing more than a hot mess without Rodgers running it.

I would love that, but you know if that were to happen that reporter would be banned from the rest of pressers, etc. I'm sure.

When Tomlin schemes the exact same thing for many, many years, the job of the opposing coach is much easier. They scheme around what tomlin does. No surprises.

When a player plays against that scheme many times, he knows how to make those small adjustments that will exploit the tired old scheme.

Why is this hard to understand? Flacco knew exactly what was coming his way. Tomlin has nothing else to offer.

Child's play.

Look, I know the schemes aren't getting it done as well as the lack of adjustments. But every time they lose, or even if they win and don't look good, it's Tomlin!!! Could it be feasible that these players get damn comfortable knowing that regardless of how lousy they played, the main focus will always be on Mike Tomlin? The HOF QB throws a terrible pick that if they just drive the ball down the field and score, maybe the Bengals make it interesting, but the Steelers win for sure. Move around Watt? The best pass rusher this year so far has been Herbig. They moved him around. They tried to keep the edges solid with Watt and Highsmith and moved around Herbig. I think that was sound. No one made a play. Not any of the three. They brought in Slay and Ramsey because they are supposed to be good man guys. They stunk. The line let a team who couldn't run the ball gouge them. When do we also look at these players? Sometimes you can't scheme yourself out of players who don't make plays.

I mean tgey brought these DBs in cause last years werent cutting it, and the DBs were overhauled last year cause the 23 crew wasnt good enough, which they overhauled cause 22 wasnt holding up... weird how all these players, many UFA adds or trades come here and within a year or two are hot garbage...

Either its magic or the DB coverage scheme is utter crap...

I also believe this bodes well for December and January football.

Not an FU but to me a mis-calculation: ARTHUR SMITH has done well & dude wants to be a head coach...When we had the ball down 30-24 with 6:52 left & were behind he called running plays on 1st & 2nd down...It just chews up precious time...we had 3 plays for 1:42...I wanted passing plays to save time. I was yelling at the TV why are you running? We sure could've used that minute & change at the end of the game...Passing plays if incomplete will kill the clock...To be a Head Coach SMTTY has to realize time is not on your side at that point...Wish he would manage the clock a little better. As the head of the offense that falls on him...

They could have at least lined up on 4th down and took a delay of game 5th penalty if they didn’t get the look they wanted, and then pointed.

But Tomlin has no clue what the heck he’s doing.

I disagree. There was no way if they scored too early they could hold the Bengals. I don't think in my 50 years of watching the Steelers I ever had such a sinking feeling when Muth scored the go ahead. A go ahead too!. You'd think I'd be jumping up and down. They had too try and bleed that clock.

I know. What I don't understand is with their pass rush, why not jam? But the problem last night is their highly paid pass rush didn't do shiit. And that ain't scheme. They blitzed. They moved their best pass rusher this year around. They kept the guys who are better at holding the edge where they were. That part was sound. But maybe if they jam guys they get home a few more times. If they don't though, Chase has about 300 yards. That pass rush had to beat somebody, and tgey didn't.

Tomlin is terrified of Chase and Higgins beating tgem deep, so they didnt press abd covered the outside deep stuff and basically gave em quick passes. They should have taken away tge quick hits and made them hold the ball...

They also should just play a normal 3/4 with a big NT instead of an undersized 4 man front with extra coverage guys on the field

6:52 left …..down by 6 and the running game excellent all day.
Here I would have thought there wasn’t one fan in all of Steeler Nation that wasn’t fantasizing about chewing down the clock with a 6:50 drive for the winning TD. Leaving no time for Cincinnati. I was wrong. 🙂

That's exactly what I said to my buddy. I was pretty sure we could kill 2 seconds 😅

It's not like the bungals were fearful of our defense.
