College Football Bowls and Playoffs

I think Ohio State is going to destroy Miami. BUT I think OSU may have a slow start. I remember last year every bye team lost because they started off sluggish after a long layoff.

Days idle
Ohio State 25
Texas Tech 26
Indiana 26
Georgia 26

That's a long time to sit idle, then travel to an away game.

Penn State's new OC according to the 2 WRs he coached into the NFL. Sounds better than a reverse flea flicker to set up a 2 yard pass.

A&M going for the tie at the end, and almost did it. 3rd and goal from the 5 yard line, they throw an int with seconds left. Great game. This is what you want bowl games to be.

They're not sitting idle, they're game-planning and practicing. Back in the BCS days, teams would finish the Saturday after Thanksgiving and play the Monday after New Years.

They're also getting healthy. Smith and Tate were reportedly not close to 100% but suited up v. Mich and IU. Now they're 100%.

But with the bowls, BOTH teams were idle for that long. Now you have 1 team idle for almost a month and the opponent is coming off a playoff win. If you watched the playoffs last year, this was noticeable on the field as each bye team looked awful in the first half.

Here are the first quarter and halftime scores of last year's round 2 games. The Bye team is the second team struggling early.

Penn State 14 Boise St 0 17-7
Ohio State 14 Oregon 0 34-8
Texas 14 Arizona State 3 17-3
Notre Dame 0 Georgia 0 13-3

Maybe the Bye teams saw this trend and have done more full contact to try to compensate, but the sluggish early play was very noticeable last year.

There's a reason why NFL teams who clinch a playoff early may rest players in the last week but they don't rest them for multiple weeks.

Good points, Tape! These byes aren't a week off. It's nearly a month without real football and you're correct, teams must prepare differently. They're also heading into a neutral environment where it's possible for the "away" team to have more fans and essentially "homefield advantage."

It's just too small of a sample size from which to draw any kind of meaningful patterns. Georgia was missing their starting QB, Boise St. is a Mountain West team laughably seeded 3rd, and OSU was on a mission after losing to a 6-5 UM team. Texas/ASU was a 4 vs. 5 game.

In 2002, OSU waited 41 days after beating Michigan to play Miami, who played two more games after OSU's last game, didn't effect the outcome.

OSU and Tenn both sat 22 days before playing last year in the first round, one team started fast -- the better team.

Miami has a path to beat OSU, but I don't think it will have anything to do with a rusty OSU team if it happens. Miami is good on both lines and has a stud at WR and RB, if they pull off the upset, I'll tip my hat to them.

Miami fans can't fill the Orange Bowl, would be surprised if the crowd is less than 80% Scarlet and Gray.

Ole Miss taking LSU down.

2 mins left, Ole Miss with the ball and up by 5 points. LSU needs a miracle.

I can tell you what happens DJ…
Being they didn’t play that game on Christmas Day, there will be no miracle
I can't stand the new stuff. I swear, laughing at my dad now looks stupid. I can't look at the technology and figure what is live and what isn't. Crazy.

I'm watching the Broncos at home against KC. If it's not live, don't tell me. I'm enjoying it.

I hear ya brother!
Hope you had a great Christmas

I wasn’t isolating Miami-Ohio State. In fact I think your point supports what I was getting at. If Miami had the bye, they’d have a distinct crowd disadvantage playing at a neutral site.

Supposedly Clemson has like 20 opt outs and injures. Klubnik is supposed to play.

Penn State has 4 out of 5 starting OL opting out. Nick Singleton is out along with some on defense, It could be a lot more. Franklin had a thing where he didn't want players to publicly opt out, but then he didn't play them. Lots of PSU fans were mad when the played Ole Miss and very few opted out but then they just didn't play.

Kaytron Allen is supposed to play but who knows? Maybe he just wants to take a few snaps. I can't imagine him playing a full game. If he did that would sure send a message that he's a dog. He has some of the best vision of any RB i've ever seen. If he was just a step faster, he'd be a 1st rounder.

Penn State still needs a DC. It was assumed it would be long time Iowa State DC Jim Heacock but he decided to retire. Now sights are on current USC DC and former Penn State player D'Anton Lynn.

WHo will be the PSU QB next year? Beau Pribula is in the portal. So is Iowa State QB Rocco Becht, son of former NFL TE Anthony Becht. Will Penn State go after the big ticket QB, Soresby from Cincinnati? Maybe just keep Grunkemeyer.

So you're alluding that practice and walk thrus equate to game day play??? BWAHAHAHA.

Yes, they're getting healthy but I have seen this movie a lot. Bama lost twice to Clemson same scenario. Slow starts are guaranteed when the team has been off for a month...
