You’re both correct! These former NFL players, many just have no clue how to manage their finances and when they lose it, it’s pretty much bad story after bad story.
This story really saddens me!
Our veterans should never, ever be living on the streets. We need to fix this problem and help our vets.

Maybe they can all open daycares in Minneapolis...

It blows my mind how someone that has made millions upon millions could lose it all.
I couldn’t do it if I tried because I’m not that stupid.

Here is a list of prominent, formerly rich athletes who faced significant financial ruin:
  • Mike Tyson (Boxing): Earned over $400 million but filed for bankruptcy in 2003 with $23 million in debt.
  • Antoine Walker (NBA): Earned $108 million over 12 years but declared bankruptcy in 2010.
  • Evander Holyfield (Boxing): Made roughly $250 million but lost his 109-room mansion to foreclosure in 2008.
  • Allen Iverson (NBA): Reportedly made over $200 million (including endorsements) but faced severe financial difficulties post-retirement.
  • Vince Young (NFL): Signed contracts worth over $26 million but filed for bankruptcy in 2017.
  • Warren Sapp (NFL): Filed for bankruptcy in 2012, listing over $7 million in debt despite career earnings of nearly $40 million.
  • Lenny Dykstra (MLB): At one point worth $60 million, he filed for bankruptcy in 2009 amid numerous lawsuits.
  • Sheryl Swoopes (WNBA): A WNBA icon who earned millions but declared bankruptcy in 2004.
  • Terrell Owens (NFL): Reported to have lost nearly all of his over $80 million in career earnings.
  • Lawrence Taylor (NFL): Lost a significant portion of his fortune due to personal issues and poor investments.
That was the short list..there are plenty more.

Wait until you hear what happens to vets in this country...
Definitely should take care of them as well. I do know they have discounted places to live but yeah need to do better for the homeless. I was surprised at some of the free programs at the VA. There are some things to like.

It's just a different scale than people with modest incomes that live beyond their means. Instead of buying a $300K house and BMW they can't afford, they buy a $30M house and a garage full of Aston Martins. I'll bet there were some bad investments in friends/family businesses, too.

And Patrick Ewing clears it up for me.
