What should be the first question to McCarthy

At his presser today?

How about, "What can you say to the 90% of Steelers nation who don't want you as coach?"
" I can say..I like to communicate through dance believe it or not. Here you go Steelers fans, here you go!"

I came away with the impression that Rooney really thinks this current team is close to a championship. I find that astonishing.

Bottom line take away for me: Mike's from Pittsburgh, he's one of the guys, we can expect to win 8-10 games and get our azzes handed to us in the 1st round.

Rooney is satisfied competing for division championships. On one hand, having winning records without a QB is an accomplishment. The fear of having a bad season also isn't great either.

Tomlin won at all costs and it prevented the team from developing, taking steps forward toward something. McCarthy has had losing seasons and it may happen this year. The Steelers could also finish 10-7 next year and be in position to trade up to get a good QB in what will hopefully be a deeper QB class.

First Question

Coach McCarthy, There is a view out there among your contemporaries that the TE is actually eligible to go out and catch passes, how does that thinking align with your world view.

Also, if the TE is eligible, can they catch the ball between the numbers, and at, or just beyond the 1st down marker? Because it has been 5 ******* years since a Steeler fan has seen that......

Art II openly said in an interview ,, the steeler way is to win, he dont believe in losing for the sake of a higher pick.. Thus we get a good HC who he thinks can guide the future of the team to winning. And he is. Problem is we still wont be able to draft high enough to get a high pick. I like you dont care if we have a bad season if its laying a plan for the future of the team.

Mike, what are your thoughts on linebackers covering #1 WRs?
How many jet sweeps make up a great gameplan?

Is having a strong oline coach important to you?

Do you mind if I ask, what do you do for your personal workouts...and will you be recommending a similar off season plan for the team?

will you be using Mikey Ts old lab or will you be building a new and improved lab. just want to know if the standard will be the standard? obviously..

Obviously he will need his own lab to create his own standard. Whatever that may be.

😀

I have to look at winning in two ways. Winning is important and should be the goal every year. There are other ways to acquire a QB other than have a top 3 pick. However, winning at all costs becomes an issue when you have to muddy up the game and rely on dominant defense (or turnovers) and an offense that plays it safe to avoid turnovers. This style of winning will get 9-10 wins while never allowing you to compete in the playoffs. Tomlin has proven that.

With McCarthy, we know he's not going to be conservative on offense. That's not his style as an offensive-minded coach. It may result in a bad 2026 and that's okay if it helps progress the team toward something better in the future.

What type of defense do you plan on running. I know 34. Buy how are you going to utilize TJ differently?

Lol, nobody would ask a detailed question like that on his 3rd day. He doesn't even have a coaching staff yet.

He said some positive things about " running game". It would be great to have a good one.
The Steelers have been saying positive things about the running game since Arians was run out of town (pun not intended).

Finally, the playoff drought question. Mentioned about the trends of the 4th-quarter momentum shifts--we've seen these crazy endings. Talking about training the team needing to prepare for the end of the game.

McCarthy definitely observes NFL trends like you and I rather than an analytics approach.
Did he mention anything about the non-existent first quarter offence?

The more I think about the emotion shown by McCarthy today, who has coached the Packers and Cowboys, his admiration of this franchise is very endearing. I'm really pulling for him after seeing how much this job means to him. A Superbowl champion coach of two legendary franchises brought to tears getting this HC job.

Let's hope you have to upgrade your name soon

Perhaps but Stafford, Maye, Darnold are more pure pocket passers. I think you can win both ways but the main QB better be able to pass and accurately.
agreed, but all those guys move better than Rodgers, Maye iced the AFCCG with his legs. It's not just necessarily about ability to run, but the ability to move and keep alive in the pocket, Rodgers wants no part of contact anymore.
