Draft day trade Highsmith or Herbig?

The problem with the sign and trade of Herbig is the team is literally just pissing money down a drain (giving Herbig that bonus money and then trading him seems like poor asset management imo). If Herbig is to be traded this is the offseason, before any new deal in place, ya let the trade partner pony up the new deal money.

Why would the team eat a bunch of dead money to trade Herbig after signing him just to yield a pick that will likely produce an inferior player? Not sure how any of that makes $en$e.

All that being said I trade Highsmith if the price is right and you can get a team to look past his frequency of injuries.
What bonus money. I never mentioned that or any contract details.

The point is that his new deal is more likely to be a more tradeable asset than say Watt, with his large deal.

Id much rather trade Highsmith and keep the young guy.

I actually think their trade value might be highest during camp as injuries around the league happen during pre-season.

We aren't talking about 2026 picks anyhow (we have enough of those). We want 2027 assets. So I say keep them all in house for the forseeable future, through training camp and if you get to a point that our OLB room is too full come late August, start making some calls around the league and see which player has the most value. You might find a team enamoured with one of them or values one of them a lot higher than we internally think. And that might be the player we end up trading (Watt, Herbig, Highsmith or even Swayer).

Maybe a team wants Watt's name recognition. Maybe someone vaules Highsmith and think they are the next great thing. And others might like Herbig or Sawyer and feel like they "just missed them" in the draft. Who knows....

This isn't the NBA, there are no sign and trade deals in the NFL for a reason. The salary cap is different. You can't sign a guy WITHOUT bonus and guaranteed money, and that money becomes dead cap once a player is moved for ANY reason.

You didn't have to mention the structure, it's the nature of the NFL cap and CBA.

I’m hoping Watt has a bounce back year this year then we trade him. Teams might be willing to give up a good pick or 2 if he shows he’s still got something left in the tank and his contract one year shorter.

Understood.

If the Steelers had resigned Herbig in the offseason before the Hendrickson deal, they may have gotten good terms that were more tradeable, in a season where cap space and dead money won't cause a problem.

The hypothetical Dallas trade would be the best possible outcome but I doubt Dallas would make it. I don’t think we’d get more than an early third for Highsmith due to his injury history and two years remaining on contract.

Herbig is the more valuable of the two IMO both to the Steelers and other teams if we’re talking trade. When Highsmith is playing, he’s a better all around OLB but Herbig is gaining with much bigger upside at this stage of their respective careers. Unfortunately I think he and agent may be over evaluating his next contract, not surprised considering what was handed out last year to OLBs.

Thought the 27 pick was trading him then, misinterpreted the timeline…maybe you were talking trade now for a 27 pick:

Either way I’m with the Highsmith is the most sensible trade piece crowd, providing they find the right suitor.

The new deal and trade is the situation I would 100% avoid with Herbig.

That ship sailed a couple years ago. They should have just forced him to play out his contract or traded him.

All these people writing TJ off based on Tomlin's **** scheme that left him on island with ZERO help. Dude is still one of the best defensive players in the league, and it's not like he's 35+.

As for the topic of the thread, Highsmith is the most obvious choice. He's a proven commodity and his contract isn't too bad. Herbig, while his upside is still unknown, it's still pretty high. And he's due for a contract. You could trade for Highsmith and get a couple years out of him before needing a new deal. Herbig would need that deal right now. Much higher risk.

He may not brush up with the sack record again, but Im pretty sure Watt's competitive demeanor gets him 15 this season.

That would be great, and if he is that disruptive imagine his (miles garrett) win rate would be up there as well…………..

I think TJ has it in him, he will have to use more than his declining reaction rate, but he will persevere.
