Training camp battles to watch:

There is 0.00000000% chance that without an off field issue a third round pick gets cut his first season... it simply doesnt happen

If the Steelers are absolutely convinced they can compete this year, and every move they made seems to support that, then its very likely that Rodgers and Rudolph will both be virtual locks as well...

Howards only path to a roster spot is either beating Rudolph convincingly to be the qb 2... and because of the experience gap, it probably means Rudolph has to look bad in the new system more-so than Howard has to look great...

That or Howard has to convince them to keep 4 qbs, which almost never happens cause there are no snaps to develop a qb 4..

The infortunate truthbright now is Allar can look like an utter bust and Howard can look like a star, and unless Rodgers gets hurt or Rudolph sucks, Howard is still getting cut
I just don’t know. New coaching staff which accompanies unknowns. With no known patterns.

I would hope if both of their performances come out equal Howard gets the nod. As he offers better mobility and an unknown ceiling.

Fans can pound the table for vet experience but if the experience comes with a low ceiling not sure how you sign off on that again if all things are created equal at the end of camp.

I think keeping Rudolph over Allar and Howard (assuming neither completely sucks) is a bad move with where the team is and their need for a starting QB next year. They realistically have little chance to win much this year, although a playoff win would be nice. If not, hopefully, they can finally have a losing season so they can get a better pick in the 1st round. No matter how they do it (another phantom IR move), I think Allar and Howard are both on the team.

i straight up prefer howard over allar. Im kinda pissed off that kaboly and writers are shoving howard off the team in lieu of allar. But mccarthy drafted allar...so,, idk.

McCarthy isn’t stupid, he won’t wave the better QB.

Drew Allar was a QB pick from a QB starved team.

Previous regime did VERY little to develop a QB plan, McCarthey addressed it immediately.

Will is getting the opportunity to show his talent, if he can not cut it then the consequences will be administered.

I love the fact for both young QBs, success or not is more competition than we’ve had in a long time.

I for one am glad Aaaa-Ron isn’t coming back next season, hopefully we go with youth (no more geriatric has beens)

I wouldn’t rule it out with Rooney behind the scene mentality in regards to their yearly approach.

i hate it here.. **** drew allar

I hear yaz slash, but I also take into consideration that the Rooney hired the QB Guru Coach, and feel the Rooney wants to get this team in order.

Grant it that he doesn’t want a “re-build” but also I think they have quietly put together a pretty good team. Time to think it’s time to insert a QB of the future (after this season) and not just a “hop-A-long” type QB.

I also think Andy Weidl is a very important piece of the machine, his talent / trench / overall evaluations have been good. My opinion is he is better in the player department than the Kahn.

This team is on the cusp of being a true competitor and that would be held back with the geriatric QBs of the past.

Exciting times we are in, it’s been a L-O-N-G time coming………

The last time the Steelers carried 4-QBs was with Kordell Stewart.

He played that “slash” role so it was an easier keep.

Rudolf / Howard / Allar are not capable of a “slash” role, so I’m finding trouble on how to keep all 4.

It’s as a more likely chance Rudolf is kept than being released.

Where do we go from there is a guess and it wouldn’t airport at me if the market is tested but also we keep all 4…somehow.

I mean, the real issue is that teams dont like going into the season with two qbs that have never played a snap in the regular season unless tgey are rebuilding

And despite what some fans think, the steelers think they will be contenders this year... otherwise they would have traded or cut some of the older guys and not signed vets in so many places..

Preseason games really mean **** in way of experience.. often players who are preseason stars get cut for guys who looked bad in those games based on staff preference from practice results..

I like Howard, but the second we drafted Allar he was virtually doomed.. rudolph, for all his flaws, is a proven backup with a postseason start under his belt..

The biggest problem is that by all accounts, Allar is a multiyear project guy.. he wont be ready this year

That puts pressure on the staff to have a NFL ready backup... cause Allar will be qb3 ... so Howard cant just be a kid with potential.. he has to be ready right now... thats a hard hill to climb for a kid who was basically redshirted last year..

It also hurts that the Steelers gambled in 19, keeping Duck because of his popularity and trading Dobbs... Ben went down and the season fizzled..

Im Not saying its what Id do.. but i think they will try to get Howard on the PS... and I dont know how much that helps him develop...

The one hope, barring injury, is he looks good in preseason and a team is willing to grossly overpay for Rudolph and makes an offer they cant refuse..

Maybe. Or he is given a chance to be the starter next year. Not sure Steelers would just hand the keys to the car over without competition.

I think he is only doomed if Rudy shows better behind closed doors when they dial up the pressure head to head.

Not sure he wouldn’t be added to someone’s roster if he was put on the PS. That will probably be contingent on what he shows.

Definitely a lot of ways to look at this. Very curious how it plays out.

I think Rudolph will be out. We dont need a vet with Rodgers back, and Rudolph doesn't know MMs system anyways.
Unless wilson is terrible he will make the team. He looked good last preseason then ended up in the doghouse. I just hope the best players end up on the field

I can see the advantage of.
cutting Mason. He will most likely get a one year some where and be back on the market at the end of the contract. Allah and Hiward might get longer contract if lost to other teams, as the league hasn't yet decided if they are worth it or not. The league has decided concerning Rudy.

Lower long-run risk.

Allah has a chance to remain for centuries, Hiward is a new face to the situation…………………….?

Sarcasm aside, Mason will be shopped for draft capital (at best a 6th, desperate 5th).

McCarthy probably already knows what he wants with the 3 QB's in question.
We as fans can only speculate, but I do wish that Howard was given an opportunity in preseason last year, leaving him and Allar as basically rookies this year.
Whatever they decide, the future of this team won't succeed with an 80-year-old QB behind center.

That injury set him back. He will need to stay healthy this time around otherwise the cut cometh. Do or die time…

Offensive line still a mess hope fat mike can straighten it out… you don’t draft an offensive its a waste of picks, time and money. Chas knoll use to say you can teach blocking you can’t teach 4.3

I am not sure I call it a mess they have three solid starters. Three vets maybe four vying for a start. Plus two rookies mixed in. There is enough bodies there for two to at least be solid.

The adage about having a good offensive line is you need one great player, one above average one, and the rest can be average.

I feel like if Jones comes back, they have four legit prospects at Tackle, they have an established young star at Center, and McCollum is a good backup Center.
McCormick and Anderson are starting caliber guards, Brock Hoffman is a great depth piece at IOL, and Gennings Dunker has all the potential in the world...

Every position will have a young guy with upside abd starting experience and at Guard and Tackle there will be a rookie with big upside as a depth piece along with a younger backup that has stating experience...

The line should be fine barring a rash of injuries or tge staff really screwing up their deployment

The line is one of the things I am most interested in this year. I feel the coaches/ scheme didn't give us much chance. The Rbs / Qbs were taking most of the heat, but alot of times they had no chance due to poor line play. We have lots of talent there just need them to reach their potential

Well said madinsomniac, appreciate all your great post(s) along the way.

I’d like to add that the drafting has been working on the trenches (more offense than defense, but both to a degree).

I don’t think this is by accident that they a newer potential with possible Vet(s) sprinkled in.

I think todays offensive line has more promise than seen in quite some time, poor BEN’s last couple years of crap OL.

Top all this off with what I feel is an improved offensive scheme and coaching, heavy on the offensive line coach.!!!
