I'm sure this has been done before but I'm gonna probably add a few wrinkles. Not only can you pick your base defense, but you can pick sub packages as well as base offense and sub packages as well as coach and coordinators. THESE ARENT NECESSARILY THE BEST PLAYERS BUT WHAT WOULD BE THE BEST TEAM. And feel free to project players or coaches into different positions if you feel they could project into a different scheme, position, or time or had previous experience at that position. Here goes.....

I'll start with coaches

Head Coach Chuck Noll
DC Dick LeBeau
OC Bruce Arians (for modern era & Ben)
DL Coach John Mitchell (for my 3-4)
LB Coach Bill Cowher
DB Coach Dom Capers
OL Coach Mike Munchak
WR Coach Tom Moore
RB Coach Dick Hoak
ST Coach Bobby April

Offense
T John Kolb
T Tunch Ilkin
G David Decastro
G Alan Faneca
C Dermonti Dawson (want a center who can pull)
QB Big Ben
WR1 Antonio Brown
WR2 John Stallworth/Hines Ward
Slot Hines Ward
TE Heath Miller
RB Franco Harris/Jerome Bettis they will be my Thunder and lightening

On my 12 personell I'm bringing in Eric Green
On my 3 TE sets I'm bringing in Green and Washington (oh my God the size of Green and Washington in the Jumbo)

My 3rd down back in obvious passing situations I'm bringing in Bell without hesitation

On my 4 receiver sets I'm bringing in Louis Lipps....I want a fast, quick twitch electric guy especially in bunch formations and in my empty sets I'm bringing in both Lipps and Randle El. Lots of trick plays and reverses can be employed

When I want a FB I'm bringing in John Henry Johnson

K The Boz
Punter Josh Miller....our D will be so nasty we want a guy who can pin it in the 20 often

Kick Returner Lynn Chandois
Punt Returner Antonio Brown

Defense (gonna get some blow back here lol). I'm playing a 3-4

My base run defense

NT Hampton
DE Mean Joe
DE Aaron Smith
ILB Jack Lambert my MIKE
ILB Jack Ham (has the speed, coverage skills and IQ to play the BUCK here)
OLB James Harrison
OLB TJ Watt
CB Mel Blount
CB Rod Woodson
SS Troy Polamalu
FS Minka Fitzpatrick

In my nickel, I can bring off Hampton, Smith, and Lambert or Ham and bring in Cam Heyward and LC Greenwood on the line with an added 40 to 50 pounds (LC at 6ft 6, Cam at 6ft5 and Greene at 6ft 4 would have so much length for the front 3).

I can also can rotate Ernie Stautner in there assuming he adds weight and become an OLB or bigger DE). I bring in Carnell Lake for the slot/box...he has size and speed (ran a 4.36). Lots of versatility with him. He had 25 sacks as a Steeler so he can be that blitz slot corner too)

In my dime, It really gets interesting.

In my 3-2-6 I have Cam, Greene, and LC as my lineman with James and TJ as my linebackers but I have a lot of flexibility depending on the offensive substitutions, situation, or look i want to create.....I can sub out Harrison or TJ, bring Ham in there drop him back into coverage and blitz a saftey. I could really have any combo of Harrison/TJ/Lambert/Ham especially when facing an empty set.

In my 4-1-6 I'll put in a combo of Cam/LC/Smith/Mean Joe with any one of Ham/Harrison/TJ/Lambert as my linebacker depending on the match-up or look I want to give. Lambert's added bulk will dictate when he plays and in which formations.

But in my dime I need 6 DBs and here is where the flexibility of Woodson and Lake comes in cause now I can make either one an extra box saftey or slot corner

CB1 Joey Porter (he's a great great press man guy but that's all he is in an all time (just a dime corner)
CB2 Me Blount
FS Fitzpatrick
SS Troy
Extra DBs Woodson and Lake

Here I have tremulous tremendous size and flexibility with my DBs. You can move around Woodson, Lake, Polamalu, Fitzpatrick. It would be a nightmare for opposing teams. We would go 17-0 almost every year

Gotta read Blitz......only in the dime but you see now I have Woodson over to the slot or he can play saftey, or he can blitz. I have so many safties that can play corner and so many corners that can play saftey. Guys would be flying all over the field. Offenses wouldnt know who was going to play where. I cant play Joey anywhere but CB in the dime. Joey is one dimensional but he's an elite press man cover. It allows me to use Woodson as a chess piece in a dime situation. It's not that he's better. It's the whole I'm after but just in the dime. Some could put Ike in there instead of Joey if they want but when all is said and done Joey will be hands down better than Ike IMHO so there is projection here. Just think of where Ike was in his 3rd year vs Joey.

The guys that never leave the field

Big Ben
Antonio
Hines (except when there are 2 receiver sets and I want Stallworth to stretch the field) or Stallworth when I want Hines in there as a blocker
The O line
Heath

Mean Joe
Fitzpatrick
Woodson
Mel Blount
Polamalu

everyone else is based on scheme, situation, and matchups although Ham would be in there quite a bit in the modern NFL and if I'm using 2 edge guys I'm going with TJ and Harrison most of the time

I read. Joey porter as cb1?

Does Black and Gold Bleeder ever have anything analytical to say that has some football merit or does he just like to be a hater and make gay comments? I realize some people are only capable of so much

I know it's gonna get blowback but I'm assembling my team. Others can assemble their own and I may have missed some but I tried my best to go back in time and put some old timers in there. I personally love the idea of having Cowher as a LB Coach. He was a LB Coach before a DC and before head coach and man his demeanor with this linebacker group. That would be outstanding. Capers too.....he had a slew of DB coaching experience but then became our DC briefly. What a legendary coach to be a position coach. Lebeau, Cowher, Capers......thats great.

As far as Joey he serves one small role.....as CB1 in the dime. Last year the Steelers played dime like 2% of plays, 12% in 2024, and 23% in 2023 so who the hell knows how much they play dime in the future but its not much. Its just a wrinkle in a small minority of the time. Practically speaking would you bring in a guy to play CB1 for 15% of the plays while he sits the rest of the time? No you wouldnt but im.not taking rhythm or continuity into consideration.

Yes I realize I could bring in Donnie Shell and keep Woodson at CB1. Donnie was 5ft11 190. Woodson 6ft 200..Porter 6ft2 193. I prefer to have Woodsons size, speed and versatility in the box either as a Blitzer, drop back saftey, or slot corner over Shell and I want Joey's height and press man cover corner skills.

Lake, Woodson, Polamalu, Blount and Fitz are in my dime so it leaves Shell as the extra saftey or CB with Woodson on the outside or its Haden or Ike or Joey on the outside with Woodson playing S/CB on the inside. I chose Joey. Choose your own =)

Don't get me wrong. Great list.
Very time consuming.
But if you think JPJ is cb1 on a all time list, what do you think he should be paid this contract?

This ENTIRE post is invalid.
You are a trolling bot.
If you don’t know Emperor Chaz name, you are summarily dismissed.

That is a fatal faux pas.
I don't correct every mistake I make. I think i doubled the K at the end of Chuck and then went with it but I do find it interesting that out of the entire post, all that some of you have to share is that a coaches name was mispelled. OMG I put Knoll Instead of Noll. The world is ending!!!! For those who like to correct people's spelling I changed it so it's less painful for you.

As I stated in my list, the Steelers played dime 2% last year, 12% in 24 and 23% in 23. I have Joey in as CB1 JUST IN THE DIME. Woodson is CB1 opposite Blount the overwhelming majority of the time and when he's not I have him as a hybrid player in the dime. He's on the field 100% of the time. Joey is playing sparingly. The rest of the time he's sitting. Just throwing some versatility in the mix.

What do I think he will get and what I think he should get are probably a bit different but after the award signing I think he gets 28 to 30 a year. Probably 30

Well if he is cb1 in steelers history he deserves it

Blitz I've pointed out that in my lineup Joey is only in there in an exotic package sparingly. Wouldson is the No 1 like 90% of the time. Blount is in there as the No 2 100% of the time. Rod is on the field 100% of the time.

So I ask you, if Rod is listed in my lineup as the CB1 90% of plays is he not the CB1?

NFL defenses don't play the same 11 100% of the time so my lineup changes a bit depending on scheme.

PS.......I intentionally mispelled Woodson for some of you .....I know so painful

Lol relax just ******* with you.

Man it's tough to leave Carnell Lake off that Defensive list, the way he went from safety to corner when Woodson tore his ACL was magical.
Yeah he's got speed and more importantly versatility. I think he could be the slot corner or like I said you can blitz him and bring up a versatile saftey. You can blitz him and have Ham drop back. There's lots you can do with multiple hybrids on the field at the same time
