Surely people can make their own decisions about where they spend their money, and where they seek to save money. The scary part about this for me is, you can bet our resident socialist political parties (as well as people who are hell bent on getting 4 wheel drives off the road because they are "big and scary") in Australia will see this and think it's a great idea too.

Probably. It tells me that they're unhappy with themselves.
Just my opinion, but I don't get the appeal of the fluorescent hair dye, piercings other than earlobes, and even tattoos for that matter.
So, it could well be that low self-esteem is the underlying issue, which begs the question living in the greatest country on the planet, where opportunities abound like nowhere else in the world, would so many be clinically depressed? My guess is that social media told them so.
It used to be that you just sucked it up and got on with life, in the worst case scenario you unalived yourself.
Now you can get affirmation from hundreds of other like-minded head cases on social media.
