A possible solution in Syria

Setting the record straight. Russia has hit a single ISIS/ISIL target out of 20 bombing runs. The rest - 19 - were targeting anti-Assad groups aligned with the US. Those of you who are bandying around Russia and Putin should be considered traitors. I wonder if you realize that...

Putin humiliates Obama in Syria

If it had the wit, the Obama administration would be not angered but appropriately humiliated. President Barack Obama has, once again, been outmaneuvered by Vladimir Putin. Two days earlier at the United Nations, Obama had welcomed the return, in force, of the Russian military to the Middle East — for the first time in decades — to help fight the Islamic State.

The whole point of Russian intervention is to keep Assad in power. Putin has no interest in fighting the Islamic State. Indeed, the second round of Russian air attacks was on insurgents opposed to the Islamic State. The Islamic State is nothing but a pretense for Russia. And Obama fell for it.

Just three weeks ago, Obama chided Russia for its military buildup, wagging his finger that it was “doomed to failure.” Yet by Monday he was publicly welcoming Russia to join the fight against the Islamic State. He not only acquiesced to the Russian buildup, he held an ostentatious meeting with Putin, thereby marking the ignominious collapse of Obama’s vaunted campaign to isolate Putin diplomatically over Crimea.

Putin then showed his utter contempt for Obama by launching his air campaign against our erstwhile anti-Assad allies not 48 hours after meeting Obama. Which the U.S. found out about when a Russian general knocked on the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and delivered a brusque demarche announcing that the attack would begin within an hour and warning the U.S. to get out of the way.

Consider: When Obama became president, the surge in Iraq had succeeded and the U.S. had emerged as the dominant regional actor, able to project power throughout the region. Sunday, Iraq announced the establishment of a joint intelligence-gathering center with Iran, Syria and Russia, symbolizing the new “Shiite-crescent” alliance stretching from Iran across the northern Middle East to the Mediterranean, under the umbrella of Russia, the rising regional hegemon.

Russian planes roam free over Syria attacking Assad’s opposition as we stand by helpless. Meanwhile, the U.S. secretary of state beseeches the Russians to negotiate “de-conflict” arrangements — so that we and they can each bomb our own targets safely. It has come to this.

Russian air strikes create panic among terrorists in Syria

Russian combat aircraft have carried out over 60 sorties bombing 50 facilities of the Islamic State terrorist organisation in Syria, Col Gen Andrey Kartapolov of the General Staff told reporters on Saturday.

"The aircraft have been taking off from the Hmeimim air base, targeting the whole Syria," Gen Kartapolov said at the National Defence Control Centre. "In the past three days we have managed to disrupt the terrorists’ infrastructure and to substantially degrade their combat capabilities."

"Intelligence reports say that militants are leaving the areas under their control," he said.

"There is panic and desertion among their ranks," the general said. "Nearly 600 mercenaries have abandoned their positions and are making attempts to get out to Europe."

These are not the Soviets from the 60s/70s or the Americans from WWII or even the 80s....the medium is the message (McLuhan)

Al Jazeera has better news than Fox or CNN. So does BBC.

US and Russia can’t agree on definition of ‘terrorist’

After Russia began bombing Syria this week, Pentagon officials have declined to directly answer questions on how they felt about the Kremlin targeting Assad’s enemies other than Islamic State. U.S. military spokesmen declined to answer the questions directly.

At a United Nations. briefing, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov offered a simple assessment when asked who the bad guys are in Syria.

Lavrov listed the Islamic State, Nusra “and other terrorist groups.” Asked to elaborate, he responded: “If it looks like a terrorist, it if acts like a terrorist, if it walks like a terrorist, if it fights like a terrorist, it’s a terrorist.”

Indeed. They want to maintain their client state and they understand unlike us that these people are not culturally attuned to living under peaceful representative republican rule. They must be held in check and governed by a near despot.

If there is one thing that the Arab Spring has taught us,is that in lieu of rule by some dictatorial despot, the region resorts to continuing it's 1400 year sectarian feud.

Putin Reportedly Sending 150,000 Troops to Syria to Wipe Out ISIS

LONDON: Russian President Vladimir Putin is reportedly sending soldiers to Syria to wipe out the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

According to The Daily Star, he is apparently mounting an enormous military mission to take control of the terror group's stronghold of Raqqa.

Putin is set to mobilise 150,000 reservists whom he conscripted into the military earlier this week.

Russia's Orthodox church backs 'holy war' against ISIS

The statements from Russia's powerful orthodox Church came as Russia continued its air strikes in Syria. Head of the Church’s Public Affairs Department, Vsevolod Chaplin, told Interfax news agency.

"The fight with terrorism is a holy battle and today our country is perhaps the most active force in the world fighting it.The Russian Federation has made a responsible decision on the use of armed forces to defend the People of Syria from the sorrows caused by the arbitrariness of terrorists. Christians are suffering in the region with the kidnapping of clerics and the destruction of churches. Muslims are suffering no less."

He also said that a council representing Russia's main religions — Orthodox Christianity, Islam, Judaism and Buddhism — will release a joint statement supporting the decision taken by Russian government to fight ISIS.

Islamic State militants blow up ancient Arch of Triumph in Palmyra

DAMASCUS (Reuters) - Islamic State militants have blown up the Arch of Triumph, a major monument in the 2,000-year-old Roman city of Palmyra, Syria's antiquities chief said on Sunday, after they destroyed two ancient temples at the central Syrian site in recent months.

Maamoun Abdulkarim told Reuters that sources in Palmyra had confirmed that the Arch of Triumph, a jewel in the exquisite collection of ruins in the oasis city, had been blown up.

Islamic State militants have blown up temples at the Roman-era UNESCO World Heritage site, which it has controlled since capturing Palmyra from Syrian government forces in May and mined other monuments and historic buildings. The group considers the buildings sacrilegious.

Outrageous mass-killings and the destruction of world antiquities. What is actual purpose of blowing up historical artifacts other than to be an even greater dick that they already are?

Putin has bombed over 50 ISIS sites in the last three days.

Let's sit back and let him bomb out the ISIS group that hates us.

Obama should send Putin the best case of vodka money can buy.

ISIS wants to erase parts of history.

I don't like where this is headed.

Russian boots on the ground in the middle east while we duck tailed and ran out of Iraq as quick as we could.

What's to prevent Russia from following ISIS from Syria all the way down the Euphrates to Baghdad? That would be kind of interesting, huh? Now you'd have a straight line of power between Iran right to Damascus. All Shiite. All with anti-Israeli sentiment.

And Russia can use our old military locations in Iraq to set up shop in Baghdad, Ramadi, Falluja and Basrah.

They'll let the Kurds take care of ISIS up on the Tigris river and around Mosul.

Sounds kind of like a reasonable plan to me if I was looking at making Russia more relevant in the region, huh?

Way to go Obama/Hillary/Kerry....

This was the WHOLE POINT of our war in Iraq. Not WMD's. Not some old Bush vendetta. It was to establish a stronghold of US influence smack dab in the Middle of the Middle East to watch and constrain Iranian/Russian influence in the region.

The crazy wack-job Sunnis were the least of our worries.

The UN will be issuing a sternly worded statement soon.

I will bet a case of beer the whole lot of you currently cheering on Putin and Russia will be changing your tune in the near future. I get it, you guys love Putin much like you love Trump, the commonalities are clear between the two. If I was you, I'd be much more careful bedding down with Putin though, his intentions are hazy at best, lest we forget him marching into Crimea/Ukraine and Georgia along with the decades old clamp down on democracy back home. I consider the situation far more dramatic and unpredictable than those of you cheering on Russian military belligerance at this point. I'm not even sure I understand it (so-called conservatives hoo-hawing over Putin), besides the lazy Trump comparison. I guess the mirage is of a loud-mouthed bellicose leader that's gonna show the limp-dick commie muslim Obama how it's done. Batshit crazy, that's what I call it. Have your day in the sun applauding Russia's aggresive Middle East manuevering, just make sure you come back here and man up if things turn ugly. If - all of the sudden - it's our troops that will be facing off with the Russian-Iranian-Syrian enemy. I wonder how many of you will be deleting some of your posts on this forum retroactively. Some of you guys, particularly with miltary backgrounds, never cease to amaze me.
