Bell suspended

I personally am hoping he has Bell regulated to 2nd string and a 3rd down roll, but I agree with you. Tomlin will have him starting. How long would I have Bell in this position? The rest of the season or if an injury happened. Tomlin needs to stop being a players friend. Will it hurt the team? Not anymore than Bell hurt it by getting suspended for the first 4 games. Will it?

But wait we just had a thread about how Tomlin wasn't his players friend and ran them into the ground and cost us a playoff game.

this could explain some things.

Must have missed that thread. Can you honestly say though that Tomlin doesn't have a culture on this team that allows players to do what they want? How many times have our players taken some stupid 15 yard penalty after a big play that hurts us? He allows this. I think this bleeds over into other areas of the team. On and off the field. Just one of Tomlin's weak areas as a coach in my opinion.

What an idiot, I haven't been the biggest Tomlin supporter, but no way can I put this on him. Hell coaches have less and less control over what they can do at their practices, let alone keeping tabs on these guys in the offseason. The stupid penalties we take on the field, Tomlin is definitely accountable for that, but I can't put this on him.

I hope Williams plays like he did last season and Bell can come back ride the damn bench, we scored 30 ppg without Bell last year. If we had a capable guy behind Williams I'd trade Bell's *** now while I could get something for him and have some control over where he goes. This was his prime year to get a huge contract, and he still can't stay away from the ****, why would we want to give him a new deal?

Why the **** are we talking about Tomlin? This is about Bell and Bell alone. Personal responsibility people. He is a grown man at this point and it is not Tomlin's or anyone else's job to police these idiots off the field. The league has it rules and that is the part of the system designed to deal with this. The players agreed to it and have to live with it. At what point does Tomlin or any coach take responsibility for the personal choices of their players away from work?
Some of you seem to relish any opportunity to jump on Tomlin's ****. I almost think some were happy to hear this news just to have a chance to wrongly blame him.

Any more then any other team??? No I definitely can't say that. It's of your opinion that its more a problem in Pittsburgh then other teams??

That before Tomlin players didn't celebrate on the Steelers?? Seriously

I remember hearing a story a long time ago about Rod Woodson refusing to take a drug test after just taking one a week earlier, yet he never failed a test in his career. Players are just fed up with all the random back to back testing and previous offenders are tested at a even higher rate. Weed can be detected in your system for 1 month, if he keeps passing and misses 1 test in between then it's possible he's clean and thats all it really is, a missed test. He probably have a busier schedule than most players with his rehab factored in too. Don't want to make excuses for him but I can see it being lost in a to do list on a busy schedule.

Isn't the random testing only occurring if you are in the drug program? As far as Woodson goes....CBA might have been a bit different back then if that story is true. Either way. Don't get yourself into the drug program if you think the random testing might mess with your schedule. Best way to avoid it I'm guessing. And if you are in it....then tough luck.

So when Ben did a header on his bike after being told to chill out that was on the coach at that time???

And once healed should the Steelers have suspended him foe being a Dumbass when they told him to layoff the bike.. you know for conduct detrimental to the team

Bell isn't a thug. How do you miss a drug test when they actually come to your house? Kiss that Steeler payday goodbye dumbass.

You ******** calling this Tomlin's fault...holy **** are you mixed-up and/or delusional.

So you are comparing Ben riding his bike and some old lady running a red light to the current topic. Gotcha. And as far as other teams go...I don't know if they get stupid penalties like we do. I can imagine they do. This is one easy aspect to clean up if a HC wanted to. I'm taking it that just because other teams have the same issue then it is ok for the Steelers to have it. I can't agree with that. Sorry.

Bell need to grow the **** up already. Nothing wrong with him smoking, but do it after football. God damn these players dont learn

Of course it different.

Bill Cowher: Hey Ben maybe you should chill out with the bike riding..

Ben: I'm good.

*has accident*

And you don't see nothing wrong with that.. Has nothing to do with the little old lady. The Steelers thought riding a bike was dangerous. The player didn't listen. But of course that's different

Posting from my mobile..

http://www.nytimes.com/1998/09/04/sports/pro-football-woodson-of-ravens-in-dispute-on-testing.html

"Woodson, one of the best cornerbacks to play the game, relented and took the test a day later and passed it. However, according to the league's drug policy, a refusal to take a drug test counts as a failure. Therefore, Woodson entered Stage 1 of the league's substance-abuse program. It calls for an evaluation by a psychiatrist, as well as an increase in random drug testing.

If Woodson, who has never failed a drug test, refuses to take another random test, he could be suspended for four games."

Same thing I'm saying. Bell needs to wait until he retires or until he is out of the ramdom testing program..

Just like Ben should of waited until he retired to ride a bike. But of course its different.

As far as celebrations that's fine line there..you don't want your players to celebrate but you also want them to play with emotion. As a fan its easy to say yeah no more celebrating just hand the ball to the ref and sit down..real easy.

Time to cut ties with this dope...........he might have great ability, but he doesn't help you sitting on the bench.......

I cant believe how many people seem sympathetic to Bell on here. At my work if you are busted for pot you are fired. If you are in a rehab program and miss a test or meeting your are fired and lose your nursing license if you have one. Bell is a selfish punk at best. There is zero excuse for missing a test other than you know you would pop dirty. Hell, I was in a restaurant bathroom one time and a guy came in and made another guy in the bathroom give a sample. Other players have posted some amusing stories about being tested at grandma's house and other crazy places. As for the football side of things I think we will be OK w/o Bell unless Williams gets hurt. I think Bryant is more of a loss than Bell is. I can tell you one thing there is no way he is getting a big contract from the Steelers. I can not stand Tomlin, but I can not blame this kind of stuff on him. I think it is just the culture of the USA now. Only thing Tomlin could do would be to sit / cut Bell to make an example. I would not have a problem with that, but I do not think any coach in the NFL would pull the string on cutting a player like Bell. Maybe Tomlin could sit him for a year and if he cant stay clean then cya, but once again I do not think any coach in the league would do that. "Dont you worry about my focus" :jag:

The Bell and Ben this are different, riding a motorcycle without a helmet isn't against the law or against the NFL's rules, smoking weed is.

I don't fault Cowher or Tomlin in either though, Ben's accident was an accident some lady missed a red light and smashed him, I don't think an old lady missed a red light and jammed weed in Bell's mouth. If it was in Ben's contract that he shouldn't be riding a motorcycle without a helmet, then yes he should've been suspended by the team then, but I don't think it was at the time.

Why do you defend the player and coach in every post. You are like the opposite of a couple of posters we have here. Answer me this:

Tomlin being soft on players discipline has hurt our team...is this a correct statement or incorrect statement?

Anyone blaming Tomlin or anyone other than Bell (or Bryant in his case) truly has no clue. The culture of the Steelers is as rock solid as any in professional sports. Bell made the decisions he has made and he must deal with the consequences. If he failed a test or missed a test, it is 100% his responsibility. If he turns out to be an addict, that is his responsibility also. I know drugs are addicting and some call addiction a disease but you don't get that "disease" unless you made the choice to do drugs in the first place.

Let's hope the missed test was more of a misunderstanding than a true missed test and that Bell can prove that. Because, as we all know, Bell is not the brightest bulb in the bunch.

No sympathy for Bell at all..I'm a big supporter of his talent but this is bullshit. Stay clean. Once you **** up and get into the random testing program you have to stop smoking. At this point you're being selfish.

As far as The steelers dishing out their own punishment their hands are kinda tied. The union will fight for the player. When we suspended Holmes that time their wasn't a big stink cause Holmes went along with it.

I don't understand why we would release him.

He's being paid $57,000 a week (for 17 weeks). That's it. As this point on his rookie deal, it's a week-to-week contract.

You don't think he's worth $57,000 a game from week 5 to the end of the season (and possibly the playoffs FOR FREE)?

If you want to argue don't sign him to a long term deal, I can understand that. If you want to argue just let him go to the free agency and walk after this season, I can understand that.

But you want to pass up a player of his talent for $57,000/game this season TO MAKE A POINT? To act like your team has morals (and what morals that still has to be explained)?

I don't get it. Someone please explain.
