I almost started this thread last week.

I have no clue what pass interference is anymore. Obviously the league has backed away from how impossibly tight they where calling this several years ago.

In several games watched over the last few weeks, Obvious P.I. has occurred but no flags and the announcer watches the replay and says good no call or that it should have been called. No rhyme or reason to what should or shouldn't be called this year.

I am in the let them play group but it needs to be consistent from game to game and right now it is not. It is almost like the league Is struggling on how they want to call it.

It's pretty obvious (not the P.I. rule). What's obvious is that the refs themselves don't know what certain things are anymore. A catch? The difference between holding and pass interference? The list goes on. About the one thing that they can agree on is that there is never holding against James Harrison. NEVER. The NFL needs to seriously consider going to full-time refs so that these guys have the time to develop a consistent understanding of the rules.

Huge reason why the ratings are down is there's absolutely no consistency with the rules anymore. When Dez Bryant pushed off TWICE on Artie Burns right in front of the ref and he sat on his whistle I almost puked. I don't watch any non-Steelers football games anymore. I didn't watch ONE single minute of NFL football Sunday and won't tonight. I get pissed watching when my team isn't even playing because there's not consistency with the refs. One guy gets a PI call and then after the change in possession the other team doesn't get the same call. I still watch James Harrison get blocked around the next time and time again without a call but then Villanueva puts his arms around a DE and the flag comes a flying. Again NO consistency.

I don't blame the refs entirely I put a ton of blame on the Packers and their crybaby fans on that one bad call on them with the replacement refs. The replacement refs until that point were 10x better than the real ones but the second those ******* fans cried like little baby girls Goodell folded up his tent and gave in to their demands. The league has almost no recourse against bad officiating and these guys make tons of cash for a 3 hour a week 17 week a year part time job.

The only way to really fix the problem is to dump half the rule book. Anything that is subjective out the window it goes. PI, holding, roughing the passer all should have to be blatant before a flag is thrown. All the ticky tacky flags need to be stopped because they change the outcome of the game and that is why people are getting sick of watching.

Another penalty that could be called on almost every passing down is illegal contact. CBs constantly are putting their hands on the WRs/TEs, it's an every down occurrence. I really think this penalty should just be thrown out.

I remember watching games in the 90's and early 2000's where I wasn't looking for a flag after every play, and you could pretty much see the penalty happen when it did, but now im pretty much looking for a flag after every damn play.

I guess that is my point. none of us know what P.I. is anymore. every single play it can be called or not called. after a incomplete pass you wait a few seconds to see if a flag is thrown. it takes away from the enjoyment of the game and it really makes me not as invested in football as I used to be.

I remember quite the opposite. Watching the replacements was frustrating and the games were taking much longer as they had to conference after every play because they had no clue what was going on.

The rule changes haven't helped, but we've also been conditioned to look for a flag. The officials have their issues, but the biggest issue is the complex rule book. The NFL overcomplicates things that don't need to be complicated.

Between expecting a flag every other pass and the non-stop commercials, I have completely stopped watching NFL games other than the Steelers.

Whichever team down tends to get the call, especially if down by 2 scores or less, but still in the game with enough time to mount a comeback.

TV ratings...

That and players pleading for a flag after every play.

I keep going back to the cryboys game. Dez Bryant, the mother slapper, does a 14 yard out to the left and punches Bill Gay in the chest for separation, makes the catch...PI on Gay. Just ******* bizarre.

The reason for NON-simplicity is so there is better control of the game. It's easy to manipulate the game with all this BS sloppy blame the officials ****. In reality it is BIG MONEY that needs certain outcomes. NOT all games are totally manipulated as then we fans just may catch on. It's a few here and there to assure a profitable week. The calamity is the cover-up.

I don't think so. that would mean that the refs would have to keep the secret. that would be to big a story to keep quite. I just think the nfl is struggling on what to call. no one has any idea what pass interference is anymore.

The only way I can tell for sure when PI is going to get called is when Bert is throwing a long pass, underthrown by a couple yards, to his WRs, who react impressively (Torrey Smith) and simply let the Steeler DB run into them. Easy play call.

For years refs never called offensive pass interference (Michael Irvin) and the league finally stepped in and had them to enforce it. However it seems to have come at the cost of inconsistent calling of defensive pass interference or calling the penalty on the wrong team.

Another nuance that seems to get ignored is not calling pass interference on plays where the ball wasn't catchable.

And did anyone catch when the announcer said during one of the Steelers games that defenders are allowed to contact receivers once the QB leaves the pocket? WTF, since when?

This rule in the NFL really needs to be addressed, no consistency on any pass play. When and what the officials calls , drives you crazy especially in this age of seeing numerous games and in HD. They can't hide anymore and it truly shows how teams win on calls and non calls in a game and when in the game the officials call a foul. I say the same thing with this targeting call in college, it truly is taking away from the game.
