Darrelle Revis’ legal issues are in the past thanks to a Pittsburgh court’s ruling this week, and the veteran cornerback’s entire focus now lies in finding a new team to play for in 2017.
He could be a more attractive prospect than originally believed, as NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport noted on Thursday, reporting that Revis could come relatively cheaply.
“Unless a team pays Darrelle Revis more than $6M, he’ll play for the minimum,” Rapoport tweeted. “Why? [The] Jets owe him $6M with offsets. They cover costs up to $6M.”
The Jets released Revis late last month, with a $6 million guarantee remaining on the massive contract they gave him two offseasons ago. Thanks to that guarantee, Revis could theoretically sign with a team for the veteran’s minimum this coming season.
The NFL’s veteran minimum is around $1 million this season for a player with 10 years experience, a jump from $985,000 in 2016, and is expected to rise again in 2018.
Revis’ previous contract stipulates that the Jets will receive a credit for any money that he should make elsewhere this season: So, for example, if Revis signed with a team for $1 million in base salary, the Jets would owe Revis $5 million, not $6 million.
Should Revis score more than $6 million somewhere, the Jets owe him nothing.
Will there be a team willing to take a chance on him?
