Steelers coach Mike Tomlin expects third-year WR Sammie Coates to take "another leap"

oh noes

"I think he took a significant leap from Year No. 1 to Year No. 2, one that we expect," Tomlin claimed. "He faced some adversity throughout the journey, with injuries and so forth. I expect him to continue to grow, evolve and come with the level of preparedness that he had last year."

Tomlin isn't kidding about the injuries, but it's hard to classify Coates' sophomore season as anything other than a major disappointment.

There was no "leap."

All Tomlin's comments really indicate is that the Steelers aren't prepared to throw in the towel, and that Coates will receive the benefit of the doubt for 2017.

Just my opinion, but with Bryant back Coates can be an outstanding 3rd or 4th option. As a 2nd option he sucked but make no mistake, he can still be a weapon for the Steelers. Injuries were a major factor in his sub par season.

He was killing it until the finger injury. It's on Tomlin and Haley for keeping playing him when he can't catch the ball. If he has healed and can play like he did the first 4 games . . . let's give him a chance to show he can do it.

Tomlin decides who sits and who doesn't, if his fingers were that bad, then he never should've played at all and let them heal.

Per Dulac he was catching the ball great for the last several weeks in practice, the guy has no battle level, and couldn't catch a damn thing. He's being Brown, Bryant, and Rogers, hell I'd take Bey over him right now

His whole mysterious finger is it healed will it need surgery etc. deal was old quickly.

Sure give him another chance. That chance will be called training camp. If he is still sucking it up, GTFO.

he didn't drop passes because of fingers actually. The problem was he didn't fight for the ball, didn't track the ball at all and even had alligator arms.

The guy needs a motivator more than fixed fingers

Exactly! That's why he had no trouble in practice catching.

exactly, he didn't give himself a chance to blame hurt fingers....no fight, no reaching out for the ball....no balls.....

No worry's though, Ayers will take his spot behind AB and Bryant while Rogers fills the slot

All of this is true but you did forget one MORE thing,.......HE closed his eyes at the precise time he should catch......WTF ????

Taking this with a very big grain of salt. Coates hands are not to be trusted until he shows us otherwise. This is a really bitter topic, even though we know he had an injury

1 catch for 9 yards for the entire 2nd half of the regular season.

Tomlin likes to talk about "The tape".

Well there it is coach.

And that drop in the AFC Championship game where he had his eyes closed at the point of the catch - huge. Huge moment for the team and the game. If there was ever a tone-setting opportunity in the game, that could have been it. Remember when the Steelers were playing the Colts in the playoffs after the Colts had beat their ***** in the regular season and Ben and Miller open up with a 30+ yard pass to Miller and they just kept beating that mule until the Colts had to adjust their game to deal with it?

Ya. Tone was set. In this year's AFC Game, the tone was ALSO set. Pittsburgh was afraid and "dropping the ball".

I do believe Coates *could* be successful if Bryant is in the lineup and everyone is healthy. I mean, who do you focus on? Let's say you are running a formation with AB, Bryant, Bell, Coates, Rogers all on the field together. What defense do you play?

If Bryant comes back, I see no room for another WR via the draft. Simply no room. Especially when you have big needs at OLB, CB and TE.

he deserves one more chance

Agreed, and he's not costing much on the cap. If Bryant comes back, Coates will be our 4th WR at best. Rogers did well in the slot.

This. I've seen pictures of him in the lockerroom where his hands weren't even taped or anything and the guy was holding his phone with both his hands. I saved one from the Xmas game against the rats where Tomlin is shaking AB's hand, and sitting right beside them is Coates with no noticeable issues with his fingers. If I could post it through my phone, I would. However, I'm sure the Steelers website still has it. Coates had bigger issues than his fingers.

This is exactly why many on this site tear Tomlin apart. The guy proved to be lazy , injury or not, so here is another Weaton...this is his come out year. We allow our super star to face book with a what thousand dollar fine which embarrassed this franchise beyond belief under Tomlin. Now this statement under our coach, forget championships under this coach.

The one where you don't bother to cover Coates, because he caught 1 ******* pass the entire 2nd half of the season.

Exactly, it's not like he was double teamed on any of his multiple drops this season, remember the @Baltimore game, dropped an easy TD right in his hands that puts us within 7 with like 6 mins left.

I was at the Jets game where he hurt his fingers. I was reading in the airport about how AB was maybe getting annoyed at all the targets Coates was getting.

Which was pretty much the draft reports on him coming out of Auburn, weren't they?

Heck, I'd trust DHB or Cobi in a 5 wide more than Coates.

Hmm, so he should have just came out and tore Coates apart when presented the question? He said he feels the dude can take the next step, and this is an egregious statement exactly how? Yes, and the Facebook video was just the absolute worst, and most heinous thing that this franchise has endured.

Coates had questionable hands before the broken fingers. Can't imagine his dropping the ball issue is going to be any better now.

Off Coates can TRUELY refocus and get the "karma" back, then yes he should remain on the active roster. In the mean time you keep him as he is cheap (cap wise) and possibly may be a force. This coming season is his to decide his future with the STEELERS and if he shows failure, cut his *** as soon as you realize it. AYERS is way better despite the physical size difference. We do have options beside keeping a alligator with closed eyes on our roster.
