Detroit Lions limping into their Week 8 matchup with Steelers

The Lions have been hit hard by key injuries this season—and that’s reflected in their 3-3 record.

The double-whammy of untimely injuries to key players--plus marquee players who haven’t lived up to expectations—has bitten the Lions especially hard as they near the season’s halfway point. Whereas normally you’d be looking for some key strengths to highlight as precautions for the Black-and-gold in preparation for their Sunday night showdown at Ford Field, the deeper you delve into the current state of the Lions, the uglier the picture gets.

For this reason, overconfidence might be the biggest obstacle the Steelers will face at kickoff in Motor City

Offensively, the Lions are ranked No. 30 in yards per play and No. 26 in yards per game. Quarterback Matthew Stafford plainly hasn’t been the quarterback that Detroit fans expected when the season kicked off. He currently ranks No. 20 in the NFL with a total quarterback rating of 48.5. But that’s actually pretty impressive considering that he’s been sacked 23 times in only six games (a 9.3-percent sack rate, earning him a tie for the league’s worst mark).

On the crucial units of offensive line and wide receivers, injuries have practically decimated the Lions. Taylor Decker, Detroit’s man-mountain left tackle and first-round draft pick in 2016, has missed the entire regular season so far, following shoulder surgery. What’s worse, Detroit has experienced a significant drop-off in play at this key position with Decker’s backup, Gene Robinson. Not only is Robinson currently listed as questionable after not participating in the Lions’ Tuesday practice, but the players behind him on Detroit’s depth chart are inexperienced, rusty, or both. Meanwhile, guard T.J. Lang and right tackle Rick Wagner also have been struggling with injuries, and it’s possible both might be unavailable for Sunday’s game.

I hope so. 6-2 going into the bye week would feel pretty darn good.

Hopefully no new injuries, time to heal up a bit more for the guys who are dinged up and a chance to focus and plan for the back stretch.

It's a good place to be if they can just focus and win this game. And for the LOVE OF GOD, I'm hoping MB has a good game. For his sake as well as the team's. Having him as a true threat really puts pressure on every defensive unit in the league. And honestly the Steelers can use that.

Trap game!

Blue out

The Lions and Ford Field are encouraging fans to dress up in blue to create a sea of blue in the stands.

Homecoming game

The Lions have chosen this week as their annual homecoming game. As a result, Barry Sanders, Billy Sims and Lem Barney will be honorary captains on Sunday night. Several other Lions legends will be honored at halftime.

I Remeber not to long ago there being a "HOME" game at ford feild..................glad of the results..........................

As for the Lions, one of my very good friends is a lions fan. He endured the "DEFEATED" season quite well but I've told him NO sympathy for him this Sunday. All in stride.................. PITT by 9+

Salute the nation

Hmm we play underdog, riddled with injuries to key player, untested backups starting, on the road, with a Mike Tomlin coached team.....

What could go wrong?

Ford Field = SB XL

Definitely some good JuJu to counteract the trap

Report: 'Teams have been calling' about Ebron

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports "teams have been calling" about the availability of Eric Ebron ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline.

Still only 24, Ebron does have theoretical upside which perhaps another organization will think they can unlock. Ebron is under contract through 2018 after the Lions picked up his fifth-year option, but next year's salary is guaranteed for injury only.
