Presumed missing, Attorney General Sessions reappears and demands justice.

Republicans to Jeff Sessions: Get Your Hands Off Our Weed

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has pulled off something that would have been unthinkable just a few years back: he managed to rally Republican lawmakers behind weed.

Sessions announced on Thursday that he would be rescinding a policy from the Obama administration that had discouraged prosecutors in states where marijuana was legalized from bringing charges for marijuana-related crimes, unless they involved distribution to minors, revenue sale benefiting gangs or cartels and a few other federal priorities. In its place, federal prosecutors would be given discretion (not guidance) to pursue marijuana-related prosecutions.

Charlie Baker, the Republican Governor of Massachusetts, called the Sessions policy “the wrong decision,” while pledging to “review any potential impacts.” Republican Governor Brian Sandoval of Nevada told The Daily Beast in a statement that he believed “Nevada’s marijuana industry is a model for other states.” Bill Walker, the Independent Governor of Alaska, called the decision “disappointing,” adding that he was “committed to upholding the will of Alaskans on this issue and maintaining our State’s sovereign rights to manage our own affairs while protecting federal interests.” Alaska became the third state to legalize recreational marijuana in 2015.

And on the Hill, Sen. Cory Gardner (R-CO) went a step further saying that he would hold up the confirmation of future Department of Justice staff unless the Sessions policy was changed.

“The attorney general of the United States has just delivered an extravagant holiday gift to the drug cartels,” Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) said in a blistering statement. “By attacking the will of the American people, who overwhelmingly favor marijuana legalization, Jeff Sessions has shown a preference for allowing all commerce in marijuana to take place in the black market, which will inevitably bring the spike in violence he mistakenly attributes to marijuana itself.”

Guess what else the DOJ is doing?

The Justice Department has launched a new investigation into allegations the Clinton Foundation used "pay to play" politics while Hillary Clinton was Secretary of State, Fox News has confirmed.

I don't see how the DOJ going after marijuana is going to help them in November. It's a stupid thing to even bring up at this point.

Most of Americans don't give a **** about smoking pot and the opioid epidemic is running rampant and THIS is what Sessions chooses to come back out of the woodwork?

Maybe he should be fired. Haven't seen one really good thing come out of the DOJ since he's been in charge.

Yeah seems pretty stupid. They aren't even bothering to arrest people for pot around here anymore considering every 4th person is zonked out of their mind or overdosing on heroin. Very strange.

I think this is more a personal thing with Sessions rather than a DOJ edict...but it all comes out of the same door either way.

I agree with Del when he says......

There is a lot of stuff needs fixin' and pot heads ain't on the top of the list as far as I am concerned.

Illegal immigrants, particularly those who become caught up in the criminal justice system. The Department of Justice has two distinct areas of power over immigration: prosecuting immigration violations and administering the immigration courts. Both could use more direction and backing

The Civil Rights Division is also responsible for enforcing the Voter Rights Act and other laws that protect the right to vote. Under Obama and Holder these rights were muddied and bastardized, Jeff could get busy here and merge States records and normalize the rules.

As far as I know, nothing has been done about the Fast and Furious mess either.

Me thinks this is just a shot across California's bow. This will them what happens when you don't agree with the CIC.

Another shot at blue states, perhaps? I can think of a few Trumptard friends of mine it won’t sit well with.

The pot thing has always been high (pun intended) on Sessions' list of things to do. I know that. But for all the heat he's been taking over his recusal in the Russian mess, the beating he's taken from Trump on twitter, and his refusal to really get anything done (or even discuss on record) on his investigations into the Obama/Clinton/Holder/Lynch mess... it just seems like a dumb time to even issue ANYTHING on marijuana.

But maybe Sessions just really is that obtuse on things.

Jeff Sessions isn't much of an attorney general. Going after weed? Really? Nah, nothing of higher import needs looked into.

The Weed thing is such a misdirect... it's literally only ending a policy that tgey cannot go after weed crimes, not at all mandating that they will... its clearly trying to take one of the half dozen things breaking around now off the big radar... Thats what this admin is best at... making statements and moves that distract the liberal press and sheeple and shift focus constantly from other things they would rather not talk about

Yeah. This is a big WTF for me too.

I think it has more to do with the enforcing Federal law(ie. immigration), and how we need to follow in lockstep. Or, it may be a signal to Congress to make Federal law in lockstep with the wishes of the American people, and just legalize it,a and get it off his desk.

Sate's rights? Anyone? Bueller?

I'll say this Del. I don't think you can separate marijuana and the opiod crisis. Yeah, I'm gonna go down the gateway drug route.

See the thing with pot is is that it loses impact on the human over time. That first joint makes someone really high. Become a regular pot smoker and it may take 4 joints for you to experience the same high you had when you first tried it. So the user, who's addicted to the high (not the pot) looks for that experience and experiments with other drugs when pot stops working.

Is it coincidence that over the past many years where more and more states and municipalities have legalized pot that we have likewise seen an ever growing opiod epidemic? I can't prove one is tied to the other, but it's suspicious.

I'd like to think that if we had fewer pot smokers, we'd subsequently have fewer opiod users.

Yeah, I'm not understanding this one. Pot is going to be legal across the country within 20 years....time for these dinosaurs to let it go. Figure out how to tax it to benefit the public.

Alcohol is the gateway drug, not pot.

Yep, true. But Tim it's not the pot.....it's prescription pills. They are the direct gateway to heroin. You're seeing the increase because of the proliferation of them everywhere. Alcohol and then Marijuana are usually the drugs that future addicts start with but have nothing chemically to do with opiates. Make no mistake, 75% of the current opiate epidemic is from the over prescription of pain pills by doctors. By the time the person is physically hooked through the balls, the prescriptions have run out and they can't get them any more. Guess what has the same chemical composition, is way cheaper and gives you the same high only more intense? Street heroin! Even more importantly, it gets rid of the withdrawal symptoms. And the withdrawals from opiates are not merely unpleasant...they are debilitating. Severe vomiting and diarrhea, intense body pain, shakes, sweats, etc. Not everyone who takes pills will get an opiate addiction, but those who do, will rob, cheat, lie and steal to get it because it is basically a fight to survive. Without an intense drug rehab program, the only way they most are going to kick an opiate addiction is to die.

Tell ya what. I've been prescribed Oxy's several times for injuries I've had. Never once filled any of the prescriptions. I'll just take Ibuprofen or Tylenol. I've seen what can happen and I ain't even taking that chance.

All good points, and I won't argue them. But I will say to dismiss pot as a potential gateway drug to others is silly. It's proven to be. The fact that the user numbs to the effect of marijuana over time leads them to looking for other drugs with which to fill the void. Yes prescription pills and alcohol are also culprits, but to say pot is not as well is naive.

Marijuana Has Proven to Be a Gateway Drug

Robert L. DuPont is the president of the Institute for Behavior and Health and the first director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

It should come as no surprise that the vast majority of heroin users have used marijuana (and many other drugs) not only long before they used heroin but while they are using heroin. Like nearly all people with substance abuse problems, most heroin users initiated their drug use early in their teens, usually beginning with alcohol and marijuana. There is ample evidence that early initiation of drug use primes the brain for enhanced later responses to other drugs. These facts underscore the need for effective prevention to reduce adolescent use of alcohol, tobacco and marijuana in order to turn back the heroin and opioid epidemic and to reduce burdens addiction in this country.

Marijuana use is positively correlated with alcohol use and cigarette use, as well as illegal drugs like cocaine and methamphetamine. This does not mean that everyone who uses marijuana will transition to using heroin or other drugs, but it does mean that people who use marijuana also consume more, not less, legal and illegal drugs than do people who do not use marijuana.

People who are addicted to marijuana are three times more likely to be addicted to heroin.

We are at a crossroads. Legalizing marijuana will have lasting negative effects on future generations. The currently legal drugs, alcohol and tobacco, are two of the leading causes of preventable illness and death in the country. Establishing marijuana as a third legal drug will increase the national drug abuse problem, including expanding the opioid epidemic.

The GoP is, again, missing a sweet opportunity to make government smaller and generate good PR.. They could cut a ton of government spending by taking pot off of the federal drug list and remove any federal criminality associated with it. Trump could pardon all those currently in jail if they are only in jail for possession or sale of pot.

That would certainly gain some black and hispanic voters for the GOP.

Sessions has done nothing of significance as AG. I think he may be taking the Clinton cash to keep those investigations stalled.

My take is that he's been in Washington too long and has too many friends in the swamp that he doesn't want to hurt.

Sessions made a fortune off of the prison system, the more people in prison the richer he gets, how in the **** that is not a conflict of interest is beyond unbelievable. I live in Alabama, a state where it is illegal to buy or own a porno, it's against the law to sell magazines like playboy or for a woman to own a dildo. Guess where Sessions was from. I supported Trump from the beginning but appointments like Sessions has me scratching my head. Why in the hell he didn't appoint Trey Gowdy is beyond comprehension.
