RD1- Justin Reid S Stanford
IMO The Steelers will be waiting to see who falls. If there are 3 players they like here I could see them taking calls to move back and to pick back up that 4th they are missing.

But I believe Reid would be one of those guys they have interest in. A lot will be determined o free agency. But if they don’t get a high priority free agent Reid would be a nice fit. He has no holes in his game. He can play the run, he is instinctive in pass coverage, can even blitz.

RD2- Darius Leonard LB South Carolina St.
Leonard is a guy I recently scouted as I had him pegged as an OLB. But at SCS he played all over. Looking at the film he’s not a quick twitch athlete like Shazier but a fluid athlete like James Farrior. He kind of flows to the ball. Loose hips and sneaky fast. Why I picked him over Malik Jefferson is he’s very smooth in coverage and understands zone concepts very well. His size it not great but his long arms really help him in shedding blockers and defending passes.

RD3- Ian Thomas TE Indiana
Thomas looks the part of an NFL TE. He’s 6-4 259lbs with long 34” arms and banana hands at 11 1/2” long. He checks all the boxes. But he needs tons of work on route running, blocking, and he is such a humble kid he has no dog in him. But with Vance and the outlaw still on the roster this gives us a year or two to mold this kid into something.

RD5a- Royce Freeman RB Oregon
Freeman kind of reminds me of Bell. I think he’s playing about 10lbs heavier than he should and that will do a lot for his feet quickness. If Bell doesn’t sign before this summer he’s going to play out his tag and is gone next year. Freeman and Connor give us a great opportunity to see them in a limited role this year but give us a peak if we need to go RB early next year. Freeman is a patient runner with very good vision and block awareness. He has above average hands but is no Bell in that department. Needs work on Pass Pro like most do but definitely has the size.

RD5b- Hercules Mata’afa Defense Washington State
I’m not sure what this kid is besides a football player. He played DT at 253lbs and obviously won’t in the NFL. Has good athleticism but not sure he’s edge material. But what I do know is he flies off the snap and uses his hands extremely well winning vs much larger linemen. This kid has the heart of a pit bull in him. I feel at the very least he could be a situational pass rusher on sub packages.

RD7a- Brett Toth OL Army
Toth is a very quick footed OT that works well moving up levels in run blocking. Has decent size with room to grow. Played in a very heavy run based offense so will need help with technique but he could be a nice PS stash. I feel Hawkins gets his shot at the swing tackle this year but if he can’t produce Toth would have a shot to be signed from the PS and take his spot.

RD7b- Richie James WR Middle Tennessee St
James is a quick footed electric athlete which reminds me a little of AB. He has no fear, runs nice routes using his feet to set up his defender, hand catcher who adjusts to the ball, has return ability. I think he’d be a nice slot guy when it’s all said and done. Has two huge years as a freshman and sophomore but injury ended his junior campaign. As a sophomore had 105 catches, 1625 yards, 12 td receptions and had another 347 rushing yards 4 more tds.

Not a fan of pick #2 and #3 ( maybe a round later for each ), and doubt Freeman falls all the way to round 5.

A 3 round mock, using a primary and secondary if the primary is off the board for rounds 1-3

1 ) ILB Evans or Vander Esch
2 ) S Reid or Bates
3 ) RB Penny or DT/NT Phillips

where are we mocking from?

If they are there, I expect the #1 pick to be Evans of Vander Esch. I believe that position is there biggest concern, particularly with Williams in last
year.

I'd watch the 3rd pick for a RB or WR. They are likely losing Bell and Bryant after 2018, so they will need a skill player on offense to replace one
of them.

I like LVE but he’s climbing fast. I don’t think he falls past the packers. Evans is Jarvis Jones 2.0. Watching his “highlight” film could more accurately be described as a blooper video of other teams. His sacks are majority clean up from another Alabama defender getting there first but missing or a miscommunication on the offensive line.

What he does well is wash through the trash. He’s a buck backer at best. Almost no coverage ability. Not a quick twitch athlete, tight hips, more of a downhill runner. I’d be ok with him in the 5th or later because Vince Williams is in the last year of his contract and we might need a thumper next year.

Reid would be hard pressed to last with our 2nd. Dude tested great at the combine, has the size, phenomenal production. I guess he could get stronger only putting up 16 reps. But I’m stretching it to find a weakness. His floor is solid NFL starter. His ceiling is pro bowler. I honestly don’t think he lasts until 28 but I see a lot of mocks that shows him going early 2nd.

I like Bates. He’s very fluid in coverage, decent tackler, and if the Steelers did go LVE in round one I’d love Bates in round two.

I would not be opposed to Penny in the third. But look how my draft fell then look at whom the Steelers interviewing. There’s too many tight ends on that list for them to not go TE in the top 3 rounds. Ian Thomas is just such a smooth athlete and his hands might be second to Gesicki in the draft. I mean some of his 1 handed catches are sick. In my draft I go top two needs then I go want.

As for Darius Leonard. He’s hard to profile because he plays the edge, middle, even rover. But in Butlers defense I think that versatility would be useful. And he does everything Evans does... but better.

The more mocks I see, the less I think Evans or Van Der Esch will be there in Rd. 1 and the same goes for Reid being there in Rd. 2. If Evans and Van Der Esch are off the board. Reid may be out No.1 pick even if Ronnie Harrison is on the board. The knock on Harrison is that he is not the brains of the D. We certainly don't need another one of those. That's why I would pull the trigger on Reid unless they have some BPA rated so high they have to take him.

And as for Freeman, why? I personally have him ranked in the Jordan Howard or Alex Collins range and both then were 5th round picks. There’s nothing particularly phenomenal about his athleticism or production. I think he has potential but in a league of RB by committee unless you are Saquon Barkley it’s a crapshoot of where your value is.

I would love LVE to be there at #28 but I think after the combine Steelers would have to move up. Evans I just don’t see it. Maybe I’m wrong but he has Jarvis Jones written all over him.

Ian Thomas, TE, Indiana (COM)
Dallas Goedert TE South Dakota State (COM)
Will Dissly TE Washington (blocking TE)
Mike Gesicki TE Penn State
Troy Fumagalli Wisconsin TE
Durham Smythe ND TE
Hayden Hurst Virginia Tech TE

That’s the list of TE’s the Steelers have met with. Tell me the Steelers aren’t going to draft one.

Hey Ford, what is your opinion on S.Griffin LB being in the mix at the right time of a draft pick for us?????

Thanks

If Griffin had both hands 1st or at least second. I feel unless a team takes a flier in the mid rounds he’d be there for us in the 7th. If the Steelers didn’t go ILB 1 or 2 I’d be fine doubling up on Griffin later on. But the need at ILB I feel is too big to not go ILB real early.

He reminds me of an old school football player. Love his tenacity and intensity. But only having one arm takes him off too many boards completely for me to draft him early on.

If we keep McDonald, TE is not a high priority. McDonald showed to be a very good blocker, and dangerous WR when he catches it.

Gesekci or Hurst would be great round three picks for us...I tend to doubt either will be there.

I'm not a big Thomas fan. He's not fast and had some injury issues. Just 25 total catches in 2016-2017.
