Leighton Vander Esch injury concerns

Only thing I could find was references to his injury(s) that kept him out of the half of the prior season had to do with a neck stinger. He was tested and, apparently, suffered no long lasting effects as he played the whole 2017 season and the combine medical tests reached the same decision.

trade all of our picks for Roquan Smith!

I wonder what it would take to move up from 28 to 10 to get him.
if a miracle happens and Shazier can play next year, he and Smith would be flat out awesome inside.

Negative Ghost Rider...

Evans equates to Timmons. Speed and instinct as advertised...

Timmons wasn’t scared to run a 40... but I feel if Evans could sniff a 4.62 like Timmons he’d have ran at both his pro day and combine and not ***** out.

To 10 would take most of our picks and maybe next year's #1, i think. If there are some medical red flags that other teams may pass on him and he drops to 15-19 or so? I'd definitely try to figure out what it takes.

I remember that same argument for Jarvis Jones... who does he play for again?

Two different positions, two different players.

Been trying to catch a lot of Evans film. And one thing I like is he can get off blocks. Something I didn't see LVE doing a lot.

Dupree has trouble getting off blocks too.

And Watt doesn't.

Woodley or Harrison didn't either.

My point is all the speed and athleticism in the world doesn't help if you can't get off a block as a LBer.

I seen enough from Evans to think he will at least be above average in this area. I also saw some burst from him. He seemed ok in coverage too.

Not my first want, but I don't think he is going to bust out.

If you are still recovering from a injury why would you run a 40 and risk re-injuring it?

Again, same argument was made for Jones. The ONE thing Jones did well was use his hands well. In fact I thought JJ best position would have been a Buck backer. Same with Evans. So if they draft Evans my prediction is he takes over for Vince Williams on 2019 and the Steelers are still looking for a permanent Mack.

I think 3 people supported or liked Jarvis before the draft pick...the majority of us hated it and knew it was a bad pick. PLUS - Uncle Jarvis plays OLB...

Sorry he played OLB not ILB so unlike OLB’s our ILB’s are allowed to be slow and unathletic...

Dude he’s not an elite athlete period. Shazier was. Timmons was. VW is not. JJ was not. Evans isn’t either. LVE is. In fact LVE is probably the only elite athlete at ILB. Roquan Smith is a good athlete but he’s under 6-1, under 240, good 40 but weighing 20lbs less than LVE should be quicker, and his broad jump and vertical are pedestrian. He compares closer to Jerome Baker than Ryan Shazier. In fact I’d take Baker round 3 vs moving up to snag Smith and having to use our 1st & 3rd to get him.

The outside backers you want more athletic as they have a greater area to cover. ILbers need to get off blocks better as they are going to see more blocks. Not that the OLBers dont need to get off blocks too. Dupree is a good example.

We have no idea what Evans speed is so in that aspect we can't = him to Jarvis.

I also saw some burst to Evans game tape.

Steelers get to see a lot more game film, so you would think they would better judge his speed.

If he annoyed them with not running the 40 I could see them dropping him a round.

If you go back Jarvis had a game that they ran right at him in college I believe in a bowl game he was exposed (His ability to hold up against the run). It was also rumors about his work ethic. None of these things are linked to Evans. In his bowl games he never was ran at etc.

So many warnings were there for JJ and they still took him.

Those concerns are really light for Evans in comparison.

Even the one camp I was at Heyward yelled at Jarvis for being the only one not off his *** when all the Steelers were standing.

So those concerns showed throughout his Steelers tenure.

Really a bad comparison to compare the two.

Really

When Evans is out of the league in 5 years we will talk.

I don't think the Steelers would drop Evans because they are irritated about the lack of a 40. Instead, the lack of a 40 is very likely due to the fact that Evans did not want to give teams that data. Ford made a good point - if Evans could run a 4.62 or 4.65 (like LVE), he would have. The fact he didn't suggests he ran 40's with his trainers and was posting a 4.85.

I have not watched nearly as much of Evans as you and Bermuda, so I do feel a little better about Evans if indeed the Steelers take him. But I really, really, really worry about his speed, ability to go sideline to sideline, and ability to cover.

one would think so. One of the stranger episodes that I can remember.

Combine doesn't bother me. Doing only some drills at his pro day definitely puzzles me.

Evans did run some of the other drills, just not straight line speed. Straight line is important but how did he do at the other running drills? Was he near the top of the class for ILB's? If not, that, not running the 40 and being knocked for his potential lack of intelligence would really make you worry about taking him. I think that's why many mocks kept having him slide into the 2nd round when he had been a mid to late 1st rounder in the earlier mocks.

PUZzling as it may seem, always find the corners and work from there.......................

If Evans is there at 1.28 he won 't be the BPA so hopefully we stick with the BPA mantra. Right now as always it's hard to say who will be there. I will be there in spirit, pushing our spirit runner faster so as to lessen the time we are on the "CLOCK" for our pick.

Leighton Vander Esch injury report

While not privy to all the data available to management, personally I'd stay away from Esch 'provided' it's a legitimate concern. That's the problem though. Without having one-hundred percent reliable medical prognosis, how can fans possibly reach a viable opinion?
