Matakevich is a 7th round draft pick. And 7th round draft picks rarely become consistent starters. But that doesn’t mean late round or undrafted players don’t have upside. Matakevich is not lacking straight-up talent, as shown by his top-tier special teams play. Special teams play may be overrated, as players like Devin Hester never really […]

I think he's a perfectly serviceable LB. Probably a bargain for a 7th rounder. IMO anyone drafted in the 4th round or later can't be a bust because you're expectations aren't real high and they aren't making that much money.

Neither. He is coming off injury and very much in the competition phase as he will be throughout camp. For me he hasn't shown enough to be undervalued.

And hasn't earned enough to be overrated.

Shazier 1st round
Red 7th round.

His instincts are excellent. Doesn't have the athletic ability / speed as shazier.
Serviceable, not a pro bowler. Adequate, but they will look to upgrade at some point.

Excellent value, as burgundy pointed out.

Dude was a tackle machine at Temple. Always reminded me of Lambert in a way. Undersized, slow, but always took the right angle and had great instincts. I want to see him 100% to see what he can do on the field. This year may be our chance to see it!

whatever breeds success.

I think there is some solid competition going into this camp. Not that there isn't troubled areas.

Neutral for me. Do I want him to succeed and surprise the HELL outA us,......YOU bet I do. Can he........ Remains the question. Due to SHAZ going down we looked to him but unfortunately he injured out also. I hope he can take the vigor of the NFL and NOT ne in injury happening. I think he will continue special teams as that is what will keep him on the 53 but I'm hoping his LB abilities can be used weather in sub packages or outright starting.

I agree he has exceeded expectations as a 7th round pick, but he's just too small / not explosive enough / and lacks the speed to be anything but a journeyman type of starter at ILB. If he was starting for a few games in a row, fans would see missed tackles, too many tackles 5-6 yards after the line of scrimmage, and him being out speed by TE's, or RB's when isolated on one on ones. He’s hardly a goal line defender as well.

I think he's a quality back up / decent special teams guy. The Steelers failure to pick a linebacker in the draft and add just one very cheap free agent cut by the Bears and the Patriots, suggests they think they are good at ILB. Hardly. I do think Edmunds will add something as a dime ILB though. We’ll see.

One of my many issues with Tomlin is he seems to like the guys who look good in practice and play hard and sticks with them even when they are exposed in games.

Drafted in the 7th but he's never been cut/subjected to waivers, right? Seems improbable that he'll excell or retain the starting job but he could always surprise us all. And I think everyone's probaly rooting for him to do so just because he's a bit of a Rudy out there when he's on the field.

Shazier was a damn good player, but he missed his share of stuff out there. Red will be fine, and Shazier would have been better, if the d-line keeps blockers off them better. Yet another facet of not having that big NT.

The dline isn't asked to play that way anymore. I do agree we need a NT, but our dline isn't asked to eat up blockers, so unfortunately we won't see a big NT.

IMO he's too slow for today's NFL. Shazier with his speed and talent made the Steelers defense look better than it really was.

I think he is rated R, for Dirty RED

Shazier was freakishly talented. His missed tackles were usually due to his speed causing him to overpursue. He'd run past plays in the backfield. He was fantastic in pass coverage too. That's where Matakevich is really lacking.

It doesn't matter how plays were missed, they were missed. I thought the world or Shazier, but he wasn't the greatest thing since canned beer, either. Because of what happened to him he is being thought of as better than he really was. He was very good, but I think he left plays out there often, for one reason or another. I think what we saw after Shazier went down was more an extremely poor job by the coaching staff being prepared for the possibility and handling the actuality. I know Red was hurt, too. Still.

I really believe that if the dline can occupy blockers more, Red or Bostic will be fine back there.

I get what you're saying, but overpursuing plays due to great anticipation and speed was something that could be coached up. He would've gotten better with time. I really do think he was a Farrior level ILB and potentially better. His fundamental flaw, and David Todd at Depot railed about this for YEARS was his tackling style. He basically pointed to the fence on this like a year or more before it happened. There was a podcast where he was using the phrase "not if, but when" in regards to Shazier hurting himself by lowering his head the way he did. But I digress. I do think his signal calling was greatly missed down the stretch. The D already had shakey communication issues and then they lost their best signal caller in Shazier. Its exactly what they are trying to replace in him with Burnett and Bostic. They are both considered solid communicators on the field.

He's a back up and special teams guy. That's his value

So that's where I read that. I remember when Shazier got hurt the first thing I thought of was reading something somewhere about his tackling style and getting hurt. I've talked about that, but couldn't remember where I read it. Thanks. I know if I was the leader of the organization and by some miracle he could play again, he wouldn't get on the field until he showed his tackling technique improved. Just for his own sake.

another Jhon Fiala type guy
