About 5 years too late on this.

PITTSBURGH -- Ben Roethlisberger cut sugar and carbs from his diet this offseason in an effort to lose weight entering his 15th training camp with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Roethlisberger, who turned 36 in March and worked with a personal trainer this summer, said the goal is to prolong his career and stay fresh.

"Knees, ankles, being lighter -- those are all positives when it comes to this age and playing football, where you're pounding on your knees and you've had a couple of knee surgeries," said Roethlisberger, who suffered a torn MCL and a bone bruise in 2015 and a torn meniscus in 2016, before playing a full season last year. "Anything you can do to lighten the load on your knees is important."

Roethlisberger looks noticeably slimmer this camp and ran at a steady pace during the team's conditioning test, which requires players to record eight 100-yard runs in 18 seconds or less.

Roethlisberger confirmed he has lost weight but wouldn't reveal the number. Told that his Steelers bio still lists him at 241 pounds, his weight coming out of the 2004 draft, Roethlisberger quipped that director of communications Burt Lauten and his group "do a great job with the media guides."

Roethlisberger is chasing a third Super Bowl, and if he follows his outlook to play three to five more seasons, he'll need to extend a contract that expires in 2020. Maximizing his potential in his late 30s follows the blueprint of Tom Brady (41) and Drew Brees (40), who are still playing at high levels.

"Do everything you can to really say, 'OK, I'm going to be the best I can be physically, mentally for this season,'" Roethlisberger said. "But if you can continue looking after your body and keeping yourself healthy, it can lead to more years."

His contract year he slimmed down with a nutritionist.

But if he is in the best shape of his career it isn't 5 years too late.

Because on the tail end of his career you want to be in your best shape to survive the season and prolong it if possible.

A professional player should be in the best shape of their life every year , no?

Oh yeah.
Ben still has some football left. Any crucial health choice he makes now can help him out

I do agree with this statement, but some athletes at the pro level just have that freak athleticism to where you look at their diet/training and think wtf?

However, father time creeps up on them a lot faster

Yeah. But Ben got away with it for basically 14 years. He's in good shape now because he knows he's at the end. Enjoy the show and Ben while he's still here. There won't be another like him.

And I have high hopes for Mason Rudolph. It's just that every QB is different and Ben is a special QB. Really hope he goes out on top.

To the OP, how long have you been at your job??? Have you been at PEAK performance level the entire time, weather physical or mental / both, pending on your job........? This is just a question of expectation of others.

Ben's ability has been at a level that maybe he has been able to get away with his physicality but age catching up realized he needed to do something different moving forward. I say more power to him and if it helps extend his playing days so be it. Ben hasn't been out of shape, yes he may have carried a few extra pounds here and there but he's been very acceptable through out his entire career as he has a HOF career currently going. The five years to late thing is hogwash so moving forward is what it's all about.

Big Ben is in shape because the Steelers drafted a QB that can play, not another Landry Jones.

If he was overweight and out of shape last year it certainly didn't seem to affect his performance based on his stats. Same goes for the past few years.

Thought I remembered seeing pictures of him looking trim before the draft, but I'm sure that didn't hurt.

I think he's in better shape due to extra motivation with the Todd being gone.

I think he fights off tackles better when he's fatter.

From what I can remember.
2004
2005
2007
2008
2009 - was a bit fat
2010
2012
2015
2016

Ben was pretty fit those seasons.
Although in 2006, he was a lot more thin, but not necessarily healthy with the motorcycle accident and that appendectomy

Any guesses on his weight? I know he has been listed at 240 since 2004, but he's obviously been much heavier than that.

A QB sneak by Ben in practice was seen. Can it really be true?
