Trade with Seahawks

Steelers will be getting a 3rd Rd comp pick for Bell, and likely a 5th for James.

I thought James would be cancelled out because of Nelson? They signed 2 FAs and lost 3. Nelson and Moncrief cancel out James and Fort. So that leaves Bell. Is that not right?

Plus whatever they get for Bell, correct?

Papillon

Compensatory picks aren't announced till after the season ends, sometime in Feb, wont know till then

We should have must signed Luke Wilson, how much better can Vannett be?

More useless moves to try to save a useless season. Let's see how many more high round draft picks we can give away.

If he doesn't make a move we will whine.....Don't know how you expect to get a player without giving something up.....

He goes down easily when engaged and has no power

Really??? Have you been on the other side of the field from him and brought him down recently?

The negativity on this board is becoming nearly unbearable. "They suck. They suck with the players they have. They suck with the coaches they have. They suck if they don't make any moves. They suck if they do make any moves. They suck regardless. **** this team and **** Tomlin."

Here's SteelerDepot's pre-draft write-up, with plenty of film breakdown. He ended up being drafted in the 3rd round. It's clear they were interested in this kid.

2016 NFL Draft Player Profiles: Ohio State TE Nick Vannett
https://Invalid Link - Check SN Hom...t-player-profiles-ohio-state-te-nick-vannett/

In my opinion, Vannett, is a better blocker than Hunter Henry is. Henry, however, is the more accomplished pass catcher of the two and probably a bit faster. Last year, former Ohio State tight end Jeff Heuerman was drafted in the third round after having a college career similar to that of Vannett. Vannett, however, might even be a slightly better player than Heuerman and it will be interesting to match up the combine numbers of the two at the end of February. Being as Vannett figures to be a top-three tight end this year, I can see him being drafted either late in the second round or by the final pick of the third round. He is most definitely an impressive all-around tight end, who might have a lot to offer to an NFL team as a pass catcher in addition to being a reliable run blocker.

Expect the Steelers to bring Vannett in for a pre-draft visit.

Projection: Late 2nd-3rd Round

Report: Steelers Worked Extra With Ohio State TE Nick Vannett At Friday Pro Day
https://Invalid Link - Check SN Home Page/2016/03/report-steelers-worked-extra-with-ohio-state-te-nick-vannett-at-friday-pro-day/

Vannett, who measured in at the 2016 NFL Scouting Combine at 6’6”, 257-pounds, wasn’t used very much in the Ohio State passing game during his four years at the school as he only caught 55 total passes for 585 yards and 6 touchdowns during his college career.

While not used that much in the passing game, Vannett excelled as an end-of-the-line blocker at Ohio State and was also used some as a detached receiver.

I wasn't sold on Grimble or the rookie as a blocker and the jury is still out on Gentry as a receiver. The weakest position easily on the team and still fans are bitching like they are on the rag. They tried to upgrade the two biggest weaknesses. Still think they need a WR, but a step in the right direction.Again I am about winning not tanking. We know Tomlin isn't going anywhere so if you are thinking a ****** record could get him canned you are delusional. Besides for debate sake if he still doesn't turn the team around it can't be said for a lack of trying. So that would fall on his shoulders for a not good enough.

I have no use for Grimble he can be gone yesterday, I am glad they upgraded the position.

I have to side with Tibs here as we know the hand we are dealt it sucks. But **** let's hope for the best instead of being miserable mopes.

There you go. Another guy they spent a lot of time with prior to his draft. I hate giving up the 5th but my guess is they will sign him to a new contract to be a solid No. 2 TE behind Vance. He won't do much this year as he knows nothing about our system. That's the part that sucks. It took Vance (and other FA pickups) a full year to get in a decent groove when they aren't in town for the preseason.

I think he is a solid player and better than James. you can't go by just stats. Seattle was a big running team, while we liked to throw it around. The only issue i have with this move is that it is months too late. Everyone and their brother knew TE was really weak for us and we did basically nothing to address it in the offseason.

No he isn't. James beats him in every single category and it isn't even close. James has played one more year:

Rec: 125 to 28
Yds: 1235 to 463
TD: 9 to 4

James has more yards in 1 year than Nick does in his entire career.

Thanks for the comparison. To be fair, could you put down how many snaps they played each. I know Nick was injured. Also it might be nice if you compared salaries as well......to be fair. As much as I liked James,we were never matching the offer he got. I think they overpaid,I really don’t blame him for grabbing it.

Ah yes, you're correct. Forgot about Nelson signing

5th rnd is fine Jessie was drafted in the 5th as is gentry who we should see get some looks as a receiver. Your pretty much looking projects in the 5th rnd anyway.
I am sure the kid is better than Grimble.

It is called a crash course. He will contribute and early.

SOURCES: Steelers did not make trade for Vannett because they think Vance McDonald shoulder injury is bad. It’s not. They are trying to bolster position and get a No. 2 after what they’ve witnessed thru 3G

Well since James was a 5th round draft pick and Vannett was a 3rd round draft pick I'm going to assume Vannett made more money. Remember that Vannett only has this year left on his rookie deal. I don't have time to look the number of snaps up. It doesn't matter to me. Him being hurt doesn't help his cause any.

Seahawks fans say they fleeced the Steelers for that high a pick for a guy that wasn't that good at either blocking or receiving, they were going to release him after this year anyway, they just picked up a guy off the street to replace they like even better, lol.

Meanwhile we are paying a complete stiff in Grimble $2M a year, so go figure their neglect at the position bit them in the ***, had to make a move

Oh well, welcome aboard Nick, Go Buckeyes!

Or think of it this way; any of the healthy TEs on the team / PS would get Mason killed if they stayed in to block. Protecting the only real QB on the roster is worth a 5th round pick.

Then it was a mistake of evaluation in preseason, everyone here knew grimble wouldn't cut it and the rookie is raw as a fish

So we basically traded Dobbs for a TE, not a big deal, I just want to know where this aggressiveness was 3-4 years ago when we were one of the favorites with a bad Secondary

My issue is with the desperation. 3-4 years ago they had skill players to cover bad draft picks. Now they don't have that luxury and Tomlin is not going to get his 8 automatic wins this year without Ben. It's panic time.

agreed, the only positive is that it looks like Ben should be back next year, and these moves they are making will still be with the team.

Like 2014-2017, our Secondary was an issue, why didn't we make a splash then? Why are making moves after our QB is out for the season and this season isn't going to result in much.
