The Coronavirus thread

The coronavirus is no worse than the flu. In fact, the flu has been shown to be worse. There are more deaths and a higher death percentage. Even then, a flu death is a very small percentage and deaths are typically infants, elderly or those with compromised immune systems. The Demonrats and their main stream media arm are spinning this up to make it more than it is so they can blame Trump (kind of like they blamed Bush for a hurricane) for it and gin up votes. All they ever have to run on is emotions and that is what they are doing here. Did anyone quarantine anyone or call a state of emergency for the flu? Didn't think so. This will run its course. More will be infected and, yes, unfortunately, more will die. But, it is being blown WAY out of proportion.

My God, yes that would be terrible if someone politicized a pandemic virus and had the gall to criticize the President and the government's response. To the gallows with them!

Ebola can kill a healthy adult unless treated... coronavirus strains aren’t new and they are basically a different version of the flu... you can develop pneumonia and that’s technically what kills people... as with all pneumonia it’s typically the very young, very old, and already ill patients that die from it...

Read the testimonials from the infected... it’s basically a bad cold...

Also The current administration has curtailed travel and started quarantines already... something the obama administration refused to do with ebola...

This comparison holds no real merit... Trump’s guys already did what the Dems wouldn’t last outbreak... literally quit trying to blame him for absolutely everything... you dems that cried wolf too much is exactly what drove so many people to him... 15 to 20% of registered dems support him now... that’s mostly because the extremists went overboard on TDS type allegations

New England Journal of Medicine: Coronavirus Could Be No Worse than Flu

https://www.breitbart.com/health/20...icine-coronavirus-could-be-no-worse-than-flu/

An editorial published Friday in the New England Journal of Medicine speculated that the coronavirus currently causing panic in world markets could turn out no worse than “a severe seasonal influenza” in terms of mortality.

Citing an analysis of the available data from the outbreak in China, the authors note that there have been zero cases among children younger than 15; and that the fatality rate is 2% at most, and could be “considerably less than 1%.”

Those who have died have been elderly or were already suffering from another illness — as with ordinary flu. The underlying data suggest that the symptoms varies, and fewer than one in six of the cases reported were “severe.”

The authors note that coronavirus looks to be much less severe than other recent outbreaks of respiratory illnesses:

[T]he overall clinical consequences of Covid-19 may ultimately be more akin to those of a severe seasonal influenza (which has a case fatality rate of approximately 0.1%) or a pandemic influenza (similar to those in 1957 and 1968) rather than a disease similar to SARS or MERS, which have had case fatality rates of 9 to 10% and 36%, respectively.

The vast majority of patients recover, and among those who are hospitalized, the median stay thus far is 12 days.

Coronavirus, they note, does spread easily, and the average infected person has infected two other people. That means the U.S. should expect the illness to gain a “foothold.” But they note travel restrictions on China (imposed by President Donald Trump over the objections of some critics) “may have helped slow the spread of the virus.”

Obama Waited Until 'Millions' Infected and 1000 Dead in U.S. Before Declaring H1N1 Emergency

"Let's call it Trumpvirus," urged a New York Times opinion writer conspiratorially. Nancy Pelosi groused that President Trump waited too long to attack the coronavirus (COVID-19) and then impetuously declared he couldn't have leftover and unspent Ebola virus money to fight it, while Senator Chuck Schumer looked down his nose and over his glasses to intone that it was the end of the world and the president hadn't spent enough money to stop the scourge. Joe Biden and Michael Bloomberg have both been called out for politicizing the virus.

By their lights, Trump's doing it all wrong. They won't be able to tell you why, but (stomps foot) they just know. They're praying for a pandemic filled with infected people and decimation of the stock market just to fix Trump's wagon in his re-election campaign, now that the whole Russian-secret-agent and peeing-hooker story went belly-up.

They just know that he's such a dummy that it wouldn't ever occur to him to stop air travel from an infected nation, increase screenings, involuntarily quarantine those infected with the virus when they were repatriated and seek a vaccine now.

Oh, wait, he has done all of those things and was called a racist for doing it.

We've had several creepy viruses emerge over the past two decades. There's been MRSA, SARS, and H1N1 (swine flu), to name a few. But it's been the H1N1 flu that has been most compared to this outbreak.

Surely, St. Barack of Obama would have dealt with this horrible pandemic better than Orange Man Bad, right? No-Drama-Obama had this whole thing under control, of course!

Well, let's compare and contrast.

The American Journal of Clinical Pathology reports that this coronavirus (COVID-19) was first seen in late December:

On December 30, 2019, scientists in China "a cluster of patients with pneumonia of unknown etiology was observed in Wuhan, China, and reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) China bureau in Beijing. A week later, January 7, 2020, a new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) was isolated from these patients."

As we suspect, the Chinese government tried to keep the virus outbreak secret – for what reason we don't know. What we do know, however, is that by January 31, 2020, President Trump had declared a public health emergency and began restricting U.S. access to non-citizens from China. Flights filled with U.S. citizens who were in Wuhan were brought to America and those people were quarantined on U.S. military bases for two weeks.

Though he lamented being called a "racist" for doing so, Trump says if he hadn't hardened the U.S. borders at that point, the virus would have had gained a bigger foothold in the country.

Now, let's go to the Wayback Machine. In April of 2009, the H1N1 became a pandemic.

But it wasn't until six months later, October, that then-President Obama declared a public health emergency on what was already a pandemic. By that time, the disease had infected millions of Americans and more than 1,000 people had died in the U.S.

CNN reported at the time:

Since the H1N1 flu pandemic began in April, millions of people in the United States have been infected, at least 20,000 have been hospitalized and more than 1,000 have died, said Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. [emphasis added]

Furthermore, the CDC's Frieden fretted at the time that efforts to create a vaccine had stumbled:

"We are nowhere near where we thought we would be," Frieden said, acknowledging that manufacturing delays have contributed to less vaccine being available than expected. "As public health professionals, vaccination is our strongest tool. Not having enough is frustrating to all of us."

Frieden said that while the way vaccine is manufactured is "tried and true," it's not well-suited for ramping up production during a pandemic because it takes at least six months. The vaccine is produced by growing weakened virus in eggs.

But wait, there's more.

According to Virology Journal, the 2009 H1N1 came into the U.S. from Mexico:

The swine-origin influenza A (H1N1) virus that appeared in 2009 and was first found in human beings in Mexico, is a reassortant with at least three parents. Six of the genes are closest in sequence to those of H1N2 'triple-reassortant' influenza viruses isolated from pigs in North America around 1999-2000.

Now, about that "racist" wall ...

Every time the Left tries to make Trump look bad on this issue they're found to be frauds.

In fact, by 2015, Obama was back trying to counter a new H1N1 outbreak in the country.

Democrats have weaponized the virus stories to get Trump. Of course they have.

By "a lot of people," do you mean nobody?

A lot of people are saying this whole thing was hatched by Republicans as an attempt to distract people from and make an excuse for the #Trumpslump of the stock market.

That's genius beyond Machiavelli. The Republicans created this outbreak to cause a stock market decline and then used that very outbreak to distract from the stock market decline.

The same people Trump is referring to when he says “a lot of people are saying...”

Don’t take my word for it... #Trumpslump it’s a thing!

What, whacked conspiracy theories only work one way around here?

Poor Dems, all of their glee over this illness will evaporate when the stock market rebounds in time for the election.

If masks are not effective then how are healthcare workers at risk if there is a shortage? You can't have it both ways. I work in a nursing home and during flu season we are required to wear a mask if we don't have the flu shot or if the norovirus is going around. The masks do not seem to be very effective in my opinion

From what I have read, ill fitting masks are a problem. also the fact that in general daily life the masks make people overconfident, they don't pay as much attention to handwashing, touch the mask frequently which just collects germs around their face. Whereas healtchare workers are constantly washing their hands, wearing gloves etc.

How is it you work in a nursing home and don't have to have a flu shot? The people I know who work in them are required to have one.

Hell, my daughter is in nursing school, does clinical in the hospital twice a week and SHE is required to have a flu shot.

i know some hospitals won't let you work without one. Our policy is either get the shot or mask on. we have a couple people that claim the shot makes then sick or are allergic to it etc etc Always a few paranoid people

Iranians LICKING holy shrines in religious tradition as country's clerical hardliners refuse to close sites despite coronavirus outbreak

Worshippers brazenly state they 'don't care what happens', even if they catch or spread the infection which has killed at least 54 in the country.

Iran's hardline clerical establishment has refused to shut down Qom despite the holy city suffering the brunt of the outbreak and pilgrims spreading the virus across the Middle East.

This virus could point to the glaring problem with the US Healthcare System. Not everyone has health insurance, so not everyone will get checked or treated, which would
cause a disease like this to spread further.

Well, unlike a bacterial infection, a virus has no cure, and only symptoms can be treated, which really doesn't require a lot of medical attention, just common sense.

And unlike the H1N1 strain, there is no vaccine for corona yet, but keep pushing your political ideology that the sky is falling.
