The Coronavirus thread

Pence is toast

21 aboard Grand Princess cruise ship test positive for coronavirus; passengers angry

Twenty-one people on the Grand Princess off the San Francisco coast have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, Vice President Mike Pence said Friday, an announcement that angered and deflated many passengers on the cruise ship.

Pence said the federal government is working with the state of California to bring the cruise ship into a noncommercial port over the weekend and quarantine those aboard as necessary. Those testing positive included 19 crew and 2 passengers.

“All passengers will be tested,” the vice president said several hours after testing kits were delivered to the ship. “Those that need to be quarantined will be quarantined.”

For much of the day, passengers contacted on the ship had been in largely good spirits. But the announcement — and the way it was delivered by Pence with no advance warning for those on board — left some frustrated and bitter.

One of those was Debbi Loftus, on the ship with her elderly parents.

“This really sucks that the government decided that they should be the one to break the news, Loftus said minutes after word broke. “Right now I, and I know my parents, are extremely angry that we are hearing this from the vice president rather than our captain.”

Government officials knew for several hours that there were multiple positives from the testing done aboard the cruise liner, which has 3,533 people onboard. These include 2,422 guests and 1,111 crew members. In total, they represent 54 nationalities.

Karen, a Canadian passenger who asked to be identified only by her first name, said she fears what could come next.

“I’m not afraid of this virus,” she said moments later. “I’m terrified of a quarantine onboard.”

“That changes things,” said another person on the ship. “I’m not going home anytime soon.”

At 3:30 p.m., the ship’s captain apologized to passengers that they had to hear of the positive cases from the vice president’s address, according to one person on board.

The captain told passengers that the ship was not given advance notice of the announcement. The captain also told passengers that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now discussing with the ship’s medical personnel how to inform people of their individual results.

In a statement, Princess Cruises said it also was unaware of the test results prior to Pence’s statement.

Pennsylvania now has 2 confirmed cases of coronavirus

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) —Pennsylvania has confirmed its first two cases of the new coronavirus, one in Delaware County and one in Wayne County, and health officials hoped to track down people who had contact with them, Gov. Tom Wolf and state officials said Friday.

More positive tests for the virus, which causes the disease COVID-19, are expected in the coming days and weeks, state officials said.

New CDC guidance says older adults should 'stay at home as much as possible' due to coronavirus

Amid a coronavirus outbreak in the United States, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is encouraging older people and people with severe chronic medical conditions to "stay at home as much as possible."

A Trump administration official tells CNN that the US Department of Health and Human Services "is in the process of doing targeted outreach to the elderly community and those that have serious underlying health conditions."

The CDC guidance comes as two top infectious disease experts with ties to the federal government have advised people over 60 and those with underlying health problems to strongly consider avoiding activities that involve large crowds, such as traveling by airplane, going to movie theaters or concerts, attending family events, shopping at crowded malls, and going to religious services.

Listen, you sopping wet vaginas. Who's job is it - do you think - to order nationwide screening at US airports of incoming passengers from COVID-19 hotspots, like Milan ******* Italy? Take a wild guess.

Who's responsible for that? Hillary Clinton? Obama? George Soros? Saul Alinsky? Antifa? The MSM? Adam Schiff? Hollywood? Coastal elites? The EU?

Amazing how you become shriveled-up, tiny nutsacks the second Trump and this administration is called upon to simply do their jobs.

Mandated by whom? The Trump admin is well behind the curve on implementing screening at airports, too busy patting themselves on the back for shutting down flights from China first week of February. (which was the right move, btw, back then).

Look, it doesn't bother me that you choose to prove your ignorance on this topic, that's your deal.

Guess what, many countries are mandating at the minimum two-week self-quarantine for anyone coming in from COVID-19 hot spots such as Italy, Iran, China etc. Anyone travelling back from these afflicted areas are high-risk, even if they're not showing symptoms per se. At the bare minimum, all of these folks should be getting proper testing upon arriving.

To the contrary, we're letting people walk right in at international airports around the country, no screening, no questions asked.

You consider that a smart, reasonable policy? Because Trump is your personal hero & savior? Really?

And you scream for open borders and how Trump is racist for wanting our southern border protected. You get all kinds of **** coming from these countries in Central America. Damn hypocrites.

Never let any political points go un-scored, even if it's over a potentially deadly disease. That's the Liberal way.

Yeah, Ive looked at that but nobody here cares about the world, only when something affects their neck of the woods

Someone tested positive for it here yesterday. IDGAF.

I'm not comparing the viruses. I'm comparing the reactions and hysteria to each. SO FAR the flu strains have been far more deadly than COVID-19. The reactions to COVID-19 has been exponentially greater than that to the flu which kills more.

Your President has reacted sooner than other political leaders chose to to deadlier situations.

The severity of the virus is of the utmost relevance when comparing reactions. One warrants the other. You are arguing that other viruses with LOWER mortality rates were deadlier. And how can one be deadlier if you’re not comparing viruses?

No, more cases cause the morbidity rate to rise.

No. The morbidity rate is a percentage of tested cases, not the sum total of deaths. It is very possible that the vast majority of people who contract the virus experience mild symptoms. Unfortunately, right now, the only people getting tested are the ones with severe symptoms.

Anybody willing to go on record and preemptively condemn Trump for blaming Pence for the handling of the Corona Virus?

Bold prediction: This happens and Trump has a different VP candidate for 2020.

Couple of points for people that know absolutely nothing about science or viruses:

1. It will spread. It's a virus. No one can stop it. All you can do is keep people from coming into the country, screen and tell everyone to wash their hands and stay away from others. That's it. This is no different than getting sick from other viruses. It kills people with weak or compromised immune systems just like most flu victims. They will probably find a vaccine for it within the next 4+ months. You also can't look at the mortality rate for the virus because you are dealing with many different countries including China who is known for not doing anything truthful. Also because the majority of people who get the disease experience mild symptoms nobody knows who has gotten it and got over it without anyone knowing. There is no way to know the mortality rate for this virus. It's ignorant to even speculate on it from a scientific point of view.

2. It doesn't matter who Trump puts in charge of it the dems will ***** about it. People are crying because he didn't put a medical person in charge... ok. But you don't need a medical dr. to be in charge of administrative duties. Pence isn't working on a vaccine. He's in charge of the government's side of it. Financial resources, man-power, overlapping governmental agencies that can be brought together and cutting red tape to speed things up. Do you really want a doctor to do that? Pence is the man that can move the government. Plus he is working with the CDC and others to get them what they need. It's beyond stupid to put a medical person in charge of that.

And just what do you want them to do about this? Please be specific.

More people will test positive for this, the CDC map from above is on the low side of accuracy. I'm not sure all cases are being reported to the media, and know the numbers for AZ are not accurate.

Please stop making this political, just this once, as I doubt any former administration would be doing any more than what's currently being done.
