The Coronavirus thread

So on Fox, Dr. Siegel was fielding questions. One said she had COPD and asked if it was ok to go shopping, and if she should wear a mask. He said she should be careful because she is at greater risk, and that he is ok with gloves, but not masks because they don't work. Here is his explanation -"Viruses tend to get on the surface of the mask, then you touch the mask and then put your fingers in your mouth or nose".

Yes, much safer to let the viruses land directly in your mouth or nose.

People wearing these masks don't use them right and they are of little to no preventative help for them in the general public and in fact can worsen the problem. Medical professionals like my daughter use them correctly and in the right circumstances and don't have them because all of the ************* who bought them all up and are wasting them. I want to punch these people in the goddamn face everytime I see someone wearing one in the grocery store. The only legitimate reason for them to have one on is if they are sick and then their ************* *** shouldn't be in the ******* store to begin with.

Sorry for the language this one really hits close to home.

It is safer with a mask for sure... the only reason we are told not to wear them is the exact one you mentioned, hospitals never stockpiled like they do in other countries so we were going to have a shortage. Had they told people to wear them the shortage would be worse... but that doesn’t change the fact that some filter is absolutely safer than no filter, which is why they use them in hospitals...

You also must remember that CDC and WHO policy for decades have been until this outbreak pretty much geared toward containment of brutal viruses and For rapidly spreading viruses immunity building through vaccination or community spread. Had we been dealing with contagious viruses correctly for the last few decades instead of discouraging steps like this to mitigate panic and paranoia, we would have had a huge stockpile of masks ready...

Vermin. I'll repeat. Here's a list of all the **** the Dems are trying to shove down our throats in a time of National Emergency.

What’s in Democrats’ coronavirus bill? Arts funding, union help and more
https://www.foxnews.com/politics/wh...navirus-bill-arts-funding-union-help-and-more

As Senate Republicans were reeling late Monday following two unsuccessful procedural votes on their version of a coronavirus response bill, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., released her chamber's version of legislation to fight the disease and its economic effects -- and it includes a raft of provisions with questionable relevance to the pandemic that has killed more than 17,000 worldwide and sickened more than 390,000.

The $2.5 trillion package includes many of the same elements as the Senate bill, which is still being negotiated as of Tuesday morning -- Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer says he expects to vote on a Senate bill by Tuesday night. These similarities include support for workers and small businesses financially impacted by the large-scale economic slowdown from stemming the spread of the outbreak; help for hospitals and health care workers in need of personal protective equipment (PPE) and other supplies; tax breaks for average Americans; direct cash assistance to all adult Americans and other measures directly applicable to the crisis at hand.

But it also includes a number of other measures that have rankled Republicans, including funding for the Kennedy Center -- a performing arts center in Washington, D.C. -- the elimination of the U.S. Postal Service's debt to the treasury, a requirement that airlines accepting assistance under the bill have a union representative on their board, environmental regulations for airlines and more.

Pelosi argued that the Senate bill, unlike the House's, would "put corporations first, not workers and families." Republicans, on the other hand, argued that Democrats are using the pandemic to push through the left's agenda items under the pretense of a bill to fight the coronavirus.

"They ought to be embarrassed," Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said of similar proposals being pushed by Senate Democrats. "There is no time for this nonsense."

Here's some of what's in the House Democrats' $2.5 trillion, 1,404-page bill.

Diversity provisions

The House Democrats' bill requires that any company getting coronavirus-related aid disclose its diversity stats, including its employees' race, gender, pay, corporate board diversity and the structure of its offices that deal with diversity and inclusion.

The reports, which will be made public within a year of the companies accepting federal coronavirus-related assistance, will also include the "number and dollar value invested with minority-and-women owned suppliers ... including professional services (legal and consulting) and asset managers, and deposits and other accounts with minority depository institutions, as compared to all vendor investments."

Now is the time to help struggling Americans, not play swamp politics with virus aid. pic.twitter.com/k2QDIcc8hP
— Oversight Committee Republicans (@GOPoversight) March 23, 2020

Post Office bailout

One section of the bill would eliminate $11 billion worth of debt for the U.S. Postal Service -- money that it currently owes to the Treasury Department. It would also require the Treasury to "eliminate the $3 billion annual borrowing limit in current law," according to a summary of the bill released by House Democrats.

Union boosting

In addition to requiring each airline that receives money through the bill to have a union representative on its board, the House Democrats' summary says the bill would nullify a variety of executive orders issued by the Trump administration on collective bargaining.

Environmental provisions

Any airlines that accept assistance from the House Democrats' bill would be forced to "offset their carbon emissions and reduce their overall emissions by 50 percent by 2050." That matches with environmental plans from Democratic presidential candidates Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders to have the U.S. reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The House bill would also expand an FAA program that incentivizes airports to purchase environmentally friendly equipment and create a "cash for clunkers" program -- similar to one created by the Obama administration for cars -- but for older airplanes.

Additionally, it will provide $1.2 billion in grants over five years for the production of "sustainable aviation fuels" that reduce greenhouse gas emissions by "at least 30 percent" compared to traditional jet fuel.

Obamaphones

One section of Pelosi's bill allocates $1 billion and calls for federal authorities to immediately expand the "emergency lifeline broadband benefit" for every household that contains at least one "qualifying low-income consumer." That would include any "mass-market retail service by wire or radio that provides the capability to transmit data to and receive data from all or substantially all Internet endpoints, including any capabilities that are incidental to and enable the operation of the communications service."

That benefit would include cell phones.

The National Republican Congressional Committee said the House bill is "full of unrelated liberal goodies, including the return of the Obamaphone," a program that the Government Accountability Office found was "rife with fraud" according to a Washington Times report at the time.

Newspaper retirement plans

House Democrats' plan, according to its summary, expands a recent law that provides "pension funding relief for a number of community newspaper plan sponsors."

$15 minimum wage for companies accepting assistance

Two different sections in the House Democrats' summary of the bill address minimum wage. One provision would "require corporations that receive any federal assistance" to pay all of its workers at least $15 per hour. In addition to the minimum wage, that same provision includes a ban on golden parachutes, restricted bonuses and compensation for executives, a ban on stock buybacks and a ban on companies changing their collective bargaining agreements.

Kennedy Center

The House Democrats' bill provides $35 million to ensure that the D.C.-based John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is able to remain operational and pay its expenses during the coronavirus-related economic slowdown.

The next page of the bill indicates that $300 million would be allotted for the National Endowment of the Arts with an additional $300 million for the National Endowment of the Humanities.

Voter registration

The House Democrats' bill has a variety of election-related mandates, including that states allow at least 15 days of early voting for elections and no-excuse absentee mail-in voting -- two things that could be useful in holding elections during the continuing coronavirus threat.

But is also prohibits states from "imposing additional conditions or requirements on the eligibility of a voter to cast an absentee ballot such as notarization or witness signatures, and prohibits requiring identification to obtain an absentee ballot."

It also forces states to allow same-day voter registration, a practice that is becoming more common throughout the U.S. but is far from universal.

Student loans

Democrats' summary of their bill would eliminate "a minimum of $10,000 of federal and private student loan debt for each indebted borrower." Student loan forgiveness has been a go-to issue for Democrats in Congress and on the presidential campaign trail.

how goddamned convenient.

I don’t know how you all feel, but I still can’t get over how Tibs came here and got all ******* political!

Ok someone educate me. So the stimulus bill passed early this morning...so you would think everyone, especially Conservatives would be happy right? I was reading the story about the passing of the bill on a more Conservative type website and I scrolled down to the comments section expecting jubilation. Wrong. 95% of the Conservatives in the comments section are furious about it. Whining, pissing and moaning about it. Mitch McConnell is a weasel, the Conservative Party are a bunch of spineless weaklings, **** them, blah blah blah. It read like spoiled kids throwing temper tantrums.

So in the passing of this bill did Conservatives actually buckle to Pelosi and give her every stupid thing unrelated to Covid19 she wanted, or is this the typical attention ***** behavior we are used to seeing from people who enjoy bitching? Am I missing something about the bill?

Meh i was for a barebones bill... 2 trillion was too much... for something that is going to be over shortly...

Dems scream about science but then ignore it when it disagrees with their agendas.. Republicans scream about fiscal responsibility then when challenged on cutting pork or letting the dems pile on To keep what benifits them, they let a 2 trillion behemoth loose on the country

**** em all... vote them all out... vote the bums on the street in... they would do better...

I get what you are saying but it goes against what the hospital my daughter works for as nurse on Covid rule out ward(or that is what it is for now) and my wifes own nursing classes are teaching. They are saying there is little no preventive value for the average person on the street and possibly a negative impact. Particularly if they are used incorrectly.

Someone would have to explain the relevance of the bill before it would make any sense to me. They announced that payments would not be made until May at the earliest...so what good are sending out payments when most people will likely be back at work before the payments hit? 250 Billion dollars is an an awful expensive feel good gesture.

Disagree vehemently.

Why? You want our first line medical professionals not having the proper access to PPE because joe six pack wants to be out on the town? THe masks people wear do little to prevent getting the disease even in the hospital those masks are being used to prevent giving it more than getting it. For prevention they wear a significantly different mask/respirator that has to be properly fitted, they wear the standard masks to prevent infecting their patients. This is a primarily contact based spread. It is not airborne in the traditional sense. If you are wearing a mask and not eye protection and you walk through an area wear someone coughs you are still just as likely to get it. When you take off the mask and then get transfer from the virus on your hand and then touch something you have just spread it and possibly infected yourself.

Like was said in an old Western, "if you're gonna get shot fer stealin' a goat, you might as well steal a horse."

In other words, if they already think you're crazy...

Prince Charles now has coronavirus. Just as a mention, the far right Conspiracy theory Q-anon implies at least that corona is a cover for the bust of the world's elite pedophile ring and human trafficking and that there are thousands of sealed indictments involving Hollywood, CEO's, royalty, and politicos. Yes, it sounds crazy.

Start researching just how many CEO's have abruptly resigned in the past 2 years.

https://theculturechronicles.com/in...e-way-insider-trading-took-place-before-9-11/

What did Epstein and Weinstein tell authorities?

Now let's look at a list of world luminaries currently under "quarantine?"

Tom Hanks, Ellen, NBA players, Madonna, Weinstein has it, Trudeau, Prince Charles has it, Prince Albert has it, and probably more to follow.

And of course, Epstein didn't kill himself.

Yes, let's let out a global virus that nobody can control to take out .000000000000000000000016 of the global population that are supposedly in a pedophile ring. That makes total sense.

Two different issues. If you want to say people shouldn't have masks because there is a shortage and healthcare professionals should get them first - that's one position. Saying they don't work makes no sense. This is not primarily contact based spread. It's primarily spread by couch/sneeze particles ending up in the mouth/nose. From - https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/201...coronavirus/2019-ncov/about/transmission.html

Person-to-person spread

The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person.

Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).
Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.

Can someone spread the virus without being sick?
People are thought to be most contagious when they are most symptomatic (the sickest).
Some spread might be possible before people show symptoms; there have been reports of this occurring with this new coronavirus, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.
Spread from contact with contaminated surfaces or objects
It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.

None of the explanations that claim that masks are ineffective make any sense at all.

You two are bitching about masks and blaming the wrong culprit. It's not Joe six pack or the hospitals' faults. It was a supply issue. There should have been more than enough of them in a federal stockpile. H1N1 depleted that FEDERAL stockpile in 2009 and Bammy, despite being warned, did NOT replenish the reserves. H1N1 used 100Million masks. They didn't restock.

Yes, citizens shouldn't be buying them. Your ire should be targeted at Bammy. Place it where its due.

Los Angeles Times and Bloomberg News: Federal stockpile of N95 masks was depleted under Obama and never restocked
https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/...-was-depleted-under-obama-and-never-restocked

The national shortage of N95 respirator masks can be traced back to 2009 after the H1N1 swine flu pandemic, when the Obama administration was advised to replenish a national stockpile but did not, according to reports from Bloomberg News and the Los Angeles Times.

The Trump administration is scrambling to replenish a stockpile of protective medical gear for healthcare workers and patients as the coronavirus sweeps across the nation. N95 respirator masks are one of the most needed medical supplies amid the outbreak.

The George W. Bush administration published the National Strategy for Pandemic Influenza plan in 2005, which called on the federal government to distribute medical supplies from the Strategic National Stockpile governed by the Health and Human Services Department in the event of an outbreak.

In 2009, the H1N1 outbreak hit the United States, leading to 274,304 hospitalizations, 12,469 deaths, and a depletion of N95 respirator masks.

A federally backed task force and a safety equipment organization both recommended to the Obama administration that the stockpile be replenished with the 100 million masks used after the H1N1 outbreak.

Charles Johnson, president of the International Safety Equipment Association, said that advice was never heeded.

“Our association is unaware of any major effort to restore the stockpile to cover that drawdown,” he said.

HHS Secretary Alex Azar reported last month that only 12 million N95 masks were available in the stockpile, “a tiny fraction of the 3.5 billion masks one of Azar’s deputies later testified the nation’s healthcare system would need,” the Los Angeles Times noted.

So you just disagree with the stimulus package concept in general. Maybe that's what these people were bitching about then, which makes sense I guess. However, it seems like 90% of the country is in favor of the stimulus package as it was originally written, so maybe it's just the loud 10% who were making all the noise I was seeing in the comments sections.

So the N95 masks have been told to be safe to prevent the spread of the disease in pretty much every other outbreak, but now the CDC claims they will not prevent it with Covid-19. Something smells foul in Denmark.

90% of the country is stupid, knows little about finances, and does not understand that there is no such thing as free money. I bet the 90% that are for their "free money" are the same 90% living paycheck to paycheck with no savings, emergency fund...etc. Sending out money to people in May or June when most everyone is back to work does very little to stimulate anything and is a token gesture at best. If the government wanted to do something immediate, talk to all finance companies (mortgage, auto, credit cards...etc) about suspending payments and interest for 90 days. That would immediately help the people that have no way of paying their bills due to the government shutting the country down. I read an article yesterday that said that they are estimating that the total cost of all stimulus and aid will be 6-8 trillion dollars. Money doesn't grow on trees and our kids and grand kids will be paying for this in their lifetime.

I think it was a strategy to make sure there are enough masks for the direct health care professionals honestly. Let's make them sound ineffective against Covid19 so 50 million people don't panic and buy them all up and then none of the doctors and nurses will have any left once they run out. Just a theory.

Yikes. Hey I'm not economist admittedly. But if there was ever a time to invest in people and businesses to help out, I'd say this is probably it. The country is quite literally closed for business. People who are in business could possible lose everything over this. It's unprecedented in my lifetime.

I don't think the CDC has a ******* clue anymore, that is why Trump has pretty much cut them out of his pressers. The hospitals and UC College of Nursing are telling completely different stories than what the CDC is saying. I am only relaying the information that a nurse on the front line every night is getting.

They are and are not separate issues I guess depends on what the real truth is but they can't even agree on what the symptoms are now.

As of last night my daughters unit was told to start looking for people with stomach issues (Diarrhea, cramping), feeling tired and lethargic and possibly no fever as an early sign of the disease and that many were being sent home with no test and being missed because these symptoms were not being listed but are actually prevalent in many cases.

So on Fox, Dr. Siegel was fielding questions. One said she had COPD and asked if it was ok to go shopping, and if she should wear a mask. Yes, much safer to let the viruses land directly in your mouth or nose.

GLOVES!

I see people wearing masks but no gloves. People are much more likely to catch the virus by touching a contaminated surface than inhaling airborne droplets.
