NFL agrees to no preseason games

i was listening to Movin the Chains on NFL radio a couple days ago. I missed what player was being interviewed - someone retired but i missed the name - but he made an intersting point. He said you can get preseason game like conditions in practice by taking the red hat off the QB. Soon as you do that, the defense will pin ears back and go full steam. Oline will have to block at game speed and WR's will have to get open because QB is going to want to get the ball out so he does not get hit. Certainly it would increase the intensity in practice but still think vets won't hit their own franchise QB like that. Anyway, was a different perspective from player on the radio...take it or leave it for that - one guys opinion.

pretty much a waste of the late round draft guys.

Without any preseason for them to prove themselves in somewhat realistic conditions, they're just going to get cut and known-commodity veterans will retain the spots.

Steelers may excel in this format. Then again they may screw the pooch. Based on the last 10 years of preseasons and first few games of the season. Steelers always start the regular season slow, and don't even play the starters an entire game during the whole preseason 4 games.

So yeah the udfa's will suffer, but I don't think we have that many holes to iron out, save at RB and S

RB is set. What real questions are there? Conner, Snell, Samuels, McFarland and Watt at FB. Done..

Conner...until he gets hurt. Then Snell and Samuels.

at least there are 3 extra roster spots this year which could help with that. Were I a GM, I would most certainly keep a few developmental guys as part of a longer term plan given those 3 slots

bet we see teams scrimmage other teams that are within a few hundred miles.

3 extra roster spots? Try 20 since if you test positive for Covid, you're out for 3 weeks.

I think McFarland steps in front of Samuels.

Should have been going on for years.

Probably scrimmage Philly, or the Rats can do Philly while we do DC. College has done fine with no preseason games. As has been said, this hurts borderline guys trying to make the team most.

Methinks this season is over before it starts. It was a bad time to franchise tag anyone.

It also hurts the overall TV package for negotiating better (higher) $$$$ from the networks. Definitely a money thing for the greed machine.

Realistically, there are probably 2-3 roster spots up for grabs entering training camp. Anyone on this board can get the top 50 guys who will make the team. It'll make a couple of the position battles interesting, particularly at RT for the Steelers. As far as going right into the regular season, college teams do it all of the time. These guys will manage.

I bet we won’t. How can they? A scrimmage is the same health risk to players as a preseason game. It would render the decision to cancel games meaningless. Having said that, it just may happen. We’ve seen all sorts of nonsense in the Covid response. From NY gov Cuomo ordering nursing homes to take Covid positive patients to health officials banning public gathering, unless it’s a protest, we’ve seen it all. The NFL allowing scrimmages would be stupid and yet would fit in perfectly with so much of the other stupidity going on.

LOL.

the roster size is 55 this year. I haven't heard what htey will do about "IR" for Covid. could have been announced and i didn't see it.

I haven't seen anything either but I'm guessing with the NFL testing if a player becomes + that that player becomes exempt and team is allowed to bring in a p-layer till that + becomes a - and then they return and someone has to be cut. I'm also speculating that practice squad is first choice but desperation may make it a scrap heap pick-up.

My guess is the NFLPA won't allow them to practice that way. Back in the day, no problem. Now? I'd be shocked.

Well, to be fair, Alabama playing Georgia State week one is a pre-season game. First teamers will be on the bench by half time.

There's going to be some serious sloppy football the first couple weeks of the year but if this is what is needed to get a season started, so be it. We all want sports back and while Covid rages, this will be a great way for us to get something normal back.

Alabama opens with USC.

that game is cancelled. The Pac 12 followed the Big 10 and cancelled all non conference games. SEC has not cancelled games. Reports are that Bama and Texas A&M are looking for replacement games for this year so they can play a full 12 game schedule. With the pac and b10 cancelling non conference, there will be plenty of teams with open dates.

There will be plenty of cupcakes open. If Bama wants a power 5 team, it will be tougher. It would have to be an ACC or Big 12 team that had a game cancelled. Penn State had to cancel a game vs Virginia Tech. Not sure if that was the same date as Bama vs USC

I know it's cancelled. That wasn't the point. The point is that college teams don't always schedule cupcakes to open the season and they are fine without preseason play. Professionals will be ok.
