The Coronavirus thread

My kids are home but did not have close contact with friends in a week or so prior. Mainly because most of their friends have been laying low too. They are doing zoom happy hours and whatnot because their families are traveling, having relatives over etc. My daughter works at a retail store. The rest of us have of course been at grocery stores, malls etc. But I tend to think when several people who are all at one event all get it within a day or two of each other, there's a reasonable likelihood that's where it came from. That just seems logical to me. Of course no way to know for sure.

Thank you.

OK. Someone brought it to the party. Could have been your family or another's. But somehow it got there.

When is the last time you went to a party and learned 6 or 7 people at the party had influenza within the next few days? When was the last time your hospital ran out of ICU beds because of the flu?

This virus isn't particularly deadly in most people but it is extremely contagious.

The flu ravages our office every year. We can count on the same older employees who used to smoke to be out weeks and a couple years ago one landed in the hospital.

A couple years ago a group of us went skiing. One guy showed up with a cough that got worse. Later that week 4 out of the remaining five (me included) had the worst flu in recent memory. I should have gone to the doc but hey it's the flu. Wouldn't be surprised if it was H1N1.

My concern is where do we go from here. Are we wearing masks the rest of our lives and having govt pick who can stay open and who can't?

This goes back to that video, I think a great number of people have had it.

Glad you got together with your friends. Sorry you're under the weather. Hope you get back to hanging out with them and enjoying life again soon. Hope I can get to go skiing again with our group again too.

Bumbling Beijing Joe: "Trump is responsible for not driving trucks to deliver the virus, but when I become Mayor, remember that it is going to take a long time to deliver the vaccine because we have to deliver it equitably, meaning we have a color-coded distribution system so the darker you are, the faster you get the free vaccine. Kamala should be getting her shot right after Rachel Dolezal."

Shots are flowing into my centers. Residents are around 90 plus minus percent acceptance while staff are ranging from 40-70 percent. We have had trainings and endless education for months on this. Folks don’t want it. But you wanna speed **** up even more and expect folks to be more accepting? Joe needs a nap.

Let me add. NJ wonderful Government leaders ****** up so bad they missed the deadline. So instead of having one of the worst hits states get it on time they had to wait another week plus to start.

States. States run the distribution not ducking a president. ******* *** wipe sleepy Joe

What the **** was Joe saying? I fell asleep halfway through...but I was awake long enough to hear him criticize how “slow” the vaccine was being administered. If anything, it’s been rushed through. But what do I know...

They don't put you into the ICU because of fear.

Whatever, these debates are pointless. Everybody just finds stuff that supports one side or the other and the reality is no one really knows ****.

As I've said before, virus gonna virus. I've been very careful, made one mistake and boom my whole family has it. No one is going to be perfect all of the time and that is just reality. Hence why it is currently spreading in places with severe lockdowns.

To me that doesn't negate the wisdom of taking what precautions we can, even if they aren't super effective. There's merit to slowing it down some, even a little, if we can. That's all.
After the year end, we can simply add up total deaths, year by year, and gauge how terrible Covid really was, because we can net out all other causes. Interestingly, monthly totals have been slowed the past few months so simple data comparison is difficult.

We do know, with reasonable certainty, that for almost 100% of the people under 70, this ends like a flu experience, much like we get on regular biannual basis.

Hope your whole family is back to 100% soon.

Fastest vaccine ever approved, almost zero historical data, no long term adverse event data, mutating virus.....but guvmint said its ok and the pharma companies have no liability, so what could possibly go wrong?

I keep thinking, the only way they could actually have any confidence in the safety of these new vaccines would be thru familiarity with the general vaccine---modified, only a little bit for the Covid. And they can produce massive amounts quickly, but in a not really stable form, so it seems to me that the simplest version of reality is that these vaccines are just next years version of flu vaccine, sped up for earlier delivery.

Maybe someone with relevant experience in this area, like Zona, could opine.

This bumbling ****.

Translation - Holy ****. Trump actually pulled it off with warp speed and got a vaccine. We kept demanding one because we assumed it couldn't be done. We can't have him get credit though so now we just have to claim that he's somehow ******* up the rollout of it and then we we get in power, the media will then give us the credit for everything. If it means forcing people to get vaccinated, we'll do it.

There are no other causes. No more colds, flu, pneumonia, AIDS... it's all Covid now. Including car crashes, shootings and skydiving fails.

My stepdad got it and it took him over the edge. He was 94, had a heart condition and was overweight but I still think he would be with us if he didn't get it. That said, he was in a rehab facility where all employees were required to wear masks. He still got it, so in all reality, what good are the masks? He begged for us to visit him but nope the Gov would not allow visits for fear of bringing in the flu. He still got it. Who knows with the love of his family to help prop him up the last 8 weeks of his life, maybe he would have had the strength to beat it like he did so many other health challenges he faced. I think he finally just gave up as the nurse stated he ripped off his re circulation mask in the middle of the night and they could not revive him. So while Covid will be blamed for his death, my Mom went through hell and is still going through hell in not being able to help support him. I hope the medical community can learn from this and the citizens of states with over-reaching governors can see that the treatment mandated is pretty much on the same level as the Japanese internment camps in their inhumanity.

Not Doctors or nurses, many Hospitals operate in the red and administrators push these types of decisions.

You have to believe people are really, really evil to unnecessarily put someone on a ventilator for money. Sorry I just don't buy that.

I'm so sorry JMM. I totally agree, not allowing elderly patients to see their families is horrific. The elderly folks I work with are more upset about not being able to see their families than they are worried about getting covid. The reality is none of them know how much time they have left and none of them want to spend it alone.

I have a couple of friends with parents in nursing homes and it is just excruciating. Sorry for your loss.

Thanks OFTB. To make it worse, the rehab place put him in an isolation room without a working phone and in two weeks could not get it working. When they transferred him to a hospital, they lost his hearing aid so he had a phone his last couple days on earth but we could not communicate with him... I have no idea what his family is going to do, likely nothing, but I'd sue the hell out of that rehab facility.

he's 100% goddamned right

Guy I went to school with had a heart attack. Rushed to the ER and used his white privilege to die alone, as no one was allowed to visit him in his last moments. Because China Virus.

Absolutely insane policies/mandates. Something tells me that it our esteemed governor were in the same boat, they'd have no problem with him or any of his family visiting. Sorry for your loss, Supe.

No way to know anything for sure but seems like quite the coincidence that the first time I was around people without a mask on in weeks, several of us got sick.

Can I know for sure that nobody had a hint of symptom? Of course not. No one can. Hence why wearing masks makes sense.

first off - to make it clear, i'm not trying to belittle you or be condescending. i save that for the prominent elite of the board.

secondly - i do hope you and yours recover quickly

those said, i was also at a fire pit get together this weekend. like you said, going in and out of the house for restroom usage etc. There were roughly 15 or so of us. Like you said you do, I avoid people. Primarily because I work from home. And have been flattening this curve since March. I'm not aware of anyone at our gathering getting sick or similar, though. I doubt all of us had been social distancing as to the CDC guidelines of 6 feet, wearing masks, etc. Though it literally only takes one very small incident to acquire the Wuhan.

Get better!

Got a text from my sister this morning, she and her husband are standing in line in Cape Coral, Florida to get the vaccine. While they are both 70, they don't have any co-morbidities. Apparently Florida is ahead of the game.

You have to believe people are really, really evil to unnecessarily put someone on a ventilator for money. Sorry I just don't buy that.

An article came out last week (I can't find it now if I do I will post it) where yet again we found out "alternate" news from the "experts", specifically on ventilators. Doctors confessed to sedating and putting patients on ventilators who specifically didn't need to be on them so they could essentially forget about them and move on to other patients.

I know that's a bit different than putting them on vents for money, but it does go to show that decisions are made we wouldn't consider. The average gullible American would say "who would do that, I have a hard time believing that".

Welp, there's an example of people being put on vents who didn't need to be on vents. It's not that hard to fathom, especially in a year like 2020, when so many deaths have been falsified, so many lies told to us, to believe some % of people could have been put on vents due to political directives by hospital administrations. I'd like to believe this wouldn't happen...but reality would indicate it is to some degree. Hopefully very small.

Found the article (original article came from the Wall St Journal)

Physician: COVID Patients Initially Underwent ‘Risky Sedation,’ Put On Ventilators To Protect Staff, Other Patients
“We were intubating sick patients very early — not for the patients’ benefit, but in order to control the epidemic..."

A critical-care physician told The Wall Street Journal that patients sick from the China-originated novel coronavirus last spring were put under “risky sedation” and placed on ventilators “[n]ot for the patients’ benefit,” but in an effort to potentially stop the virus from spreading to staff and other patients.

Other less risky methods of breathing support could potentially result in a patient “spray[ing] dangerous amounts of virus into the air,” the physician argued.

“We were intubating sick patients very early — not for the patients’ benefit, but in order to control the epidemic and to save other patients,” said Dr. Theodore Iwashyna, a critical-care physician at University of Michigan and Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals in Ann Arbor. “That felt awful.”

The shocking comment was picked up by the founder of Rational Guard and lockdown critic Justin Hart.

“What happened to ‘do no harm,'” he questioned. “This article makes me sick.”

Hart’s comment is in reference to one of the promises in the Hippocratic Oath doctors are sworn to practice: “first, do no harm.”

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">What happened to “do no harm”<br>This article makes me sick. <a href="https://t.co/PWVMum5LET">https://t.co/PWVMum5LET</a> <a href="https://t.co/2kib9ITbK3">pic.twitter.com/2kib9ITbK3</a></p>— Justin Hart (@justin_hart) <a href="https://twitter.com/justin_hart/status/1340898030782881793?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">December 21, 2020</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

The Journal elaborated on Dr. Iwashyna’s remarks: “Last spring, doctors put patients on ventilators partly to limit contagion at a time when it was less clear how the virus spread, when protective masks and gowns were in short supply. Doctors could have employed other kinds of breathing support devices that don’t require risky sedation, but early reports suggested patients using them could spray dangerous amounts of virus into the air, said Theodore Iwashyna.”

According to the critical-care physician, doctors and nurses at the time “feared the virus would spread through hospitals.”

“Ventilators can injure lungs by causing too much strain as the machines force in air,” the Journal noted. “They deliver air and oxygen through a throat tube, which the body typically fights.”

“We’ve got gag reflexes that are pretty hard to go away, precisely to avoid things going into our lungs,” Iwashyna explained.

Moreover, early COVID patients were looked in on fewer times than normal — again in an attempt to “slow the spread” within the hospital — and therefore given stronger sedatives. Research suggests stronger sedatives are riskier for patients.

“As a safety precaution, doctors and hospitals limited the access of health-care workers to coronavirus patients on ventilators, giving them fewer opportunities to check on them,” the Journal noted. “That meant patients required more powerful sedatives to keep them from pulling out throat tubes. Sedation increases risk for delirium, research suggests, and delirium increases the likelihood of long-term confusion and death.”

The high risk to patients was ultimately all for naught, per the Journal. Research showed that “alternative devices to ventilators, such as delivering oxygen through nasal tubes, weren’t as risky to caretakers as believed,” the Journal said.

Treatment now mostly looks like it did pre-pandemic: “Doctors hold off longer before placing patients on ventilators. Patients get less powerful sedatives, with doctors checking more frequently to see if they can halt the drugs entirely and dialing back how much air ventilators push into patients’ lungs with each breath.”

“Let us go back to basics,” said Dr. Eduardo Oliveira, executive medical director for critical-care services for AdventHealth Central Florida. “The less you deviate from it, the better.”

Who believes a single word out of the mouths of these government officials about the Chinese flu? One word?

Personally, I don't believe a word said by Fauci, Biden, Harris, Whitmer, Newsom, and on and on. Every last one of them has said one thing then the exact opposite a few weeks later, has bloviated some dire warning about what WE must do and then done the exact opposite themselves, and fail completely to mention the fact that the ******* virus somehow, miraculously, came from our greatest enemy.

**** them. **** them all.

WE must do this. Not them. This is a WEhanFlu, not a DemocraticPoliticianFlu.
Goodness. Just think of the dire outcome for the economy, nay, the entire universe if the DPF happened!
