T.J. Watt in jeopardy of missing Week 1

Watt has Hall of Fame talent, you just don't let players like that leave. He's earned a top contract the Steelers are behind the rest of the league in how they structure them. They changed how they negotiated with QBs, they changed how they structured contracts with void years, they traded a first-round pick for a player. This contract needs to be the next step in the evolution of the front office.
You also do not let players under contract dictate what the organization does or does not do.

If he doesn't, there is a cut off for what he can miss on this contract before it carries over to next year? I believe he can hold out all year, but still owe us year four.

Correct?

I think he has to play in game 10 or back immeadiately after game ten for it to be an accrued year. After game 10 he can't play rest of year and it does not count as year served so he would still be on 5th year option in 2022. Currently the STEELERS hold a lot of weight over him, remeber there are still two tag years also.

I hope like hell it never gets to that but if it's not looking long term then get best trade value possible.

I don't get how most support Watt (while under contract) with him not fully participating and might end up holding out during the actual season. And vilify Bell for missing camp and then holding out while not under contract. Both held out for $$$$$$. One is seen one way and the other is seen the opposite. Maybe when the first week actually is here and if Watt isn't here people will have a change of opinion. Or not.
Well, i think it has a smidgeon to do with the fact that Watt is white, whereas Bell is black. <ducks>

Take up his option, give him two more tags, then part ways. Or sign him and trade him to an NFC team.

We need the big paycheck for a qb.
You know Dj, I always get kind of a chuckle reading all the different view points. When another superstar signs a massive contract with their respective team,a lot come on the forum and ridicule the team instantly. How it's going to hamstring the salary cap for the team.....too much for the position etc.
Well the shoe is on our foot this time around. And next year as well. I am almost leaning towards your position.

It's a hard one for me. I love TJ on the field as much as anyone. The problem for me is also the success factor. The team including Watt disappeare during crunch time. Let's hope we make the playoffs this year. Having the highest paid Defensive player ever and not making the playoffs or one and done while giving up 40+just does not sit well with me. It's not all on TJ of course.

Here is the structure of the Bosa deal. I'm only dealing with the guarenteed money.
year 1 1m base 7m signing 7m roster
year 2 7msigning
year 3 7msigning
year 4 7msigning
year 5 7m signing 7m roster
year 6 8.36m roster

Now to my count that is 35m in signing bonus but obviously he is on the roster year one so you can call the roster bonus guarenteed and his base. So that gets you to 43m in my eyes. I don't see how you get the 15.36 m in roster bonus as guarenteed because he has to be on the roster. It says 78 million guarenteed at signing so the math doesn't add up for me. 42 plus 15.36 is only 57 and change. Unless there is language not shown in the public version of the contract and that is the sticking point with the Steelers. Maybe they won't guarentee that way.

Mental reps? I'm going to mentally practice my take offs and landings after not having flown since January. You coming with? ;)

I'll do mental reps for 5 million a season. I promise to mentally destroy everyone and get 10 sacks a game in my mind...

I'll throw in the playoffs for free.

I think it has more to do with the positions they play + the fact Bell was talking publicly about resetting the market for running backs..

That is the unfortunate thing. Steelers were actually offering more money in the total contract than he received from the Jets. The Jets just gave him a larger guarentee.

Not really, there are a couple of differences.

1. Bell had no intention of playing that year. He wasn't in camp, he was in strip clubs and riding jet skis. I've said many times before that he knew he was injured a lot and didn't want to get hurt in his FA year. He and his agent found a loophole in the rules and he simply sat out, which I think was the plan all along. I refer you to former Steeler Mike Wallace about ten years ago who played like **** in his FA year because he was playing with one goal in mind which was to not get hurt and jeapordize a big FA contract. Mike wasn't taking any chances and putting himself out there for nobody and and if that pass sailed past him, well that's just the breaks.

2. Watt is at least in camp so it appears he intends to play. Watt IS under contract and it's time he gets his butt on the field.

AMAZING how TJ WATT can't even come close to competeing with Dri Archer when it comes to thread legth.........................................................................

man I just want this contract to get done so we can find something else to ***** at
I plan on bitching about Keith Butler.

If you're racist you may think that. I'm pretty willing to bet that if Watt tells the other DLinemen that he'll be back by Week 1 and then decides to hold out the ENTIRE season, he's going to be plenty vilified. It hasn't gotten to "Bell Con 1" yet.

TJ Watt is a game-changer. He can take over a game on D. He's the only one we have that can do that. I know Minkah will want paid and maybe someday Bush might command a big payday (not yet though) but Watt is the only player that can take over a game. That's why he will get the money he wants either from the Steelers or from someone else. Sign him and get him on the practice field today so he can at least get some snaps this week. If you are going to pay one player on D out of Watt, Minkah and Bush, it is a resounding WATT!!!!!! No questions asked.

Lol... and how did that work out for him?

As Ben said, TJ Watt may be the best player in the game, period, regardless of position, offense or defense.

He's the one you make an exception for, he's a generational talent. Just get it done and never look back.

Wow! Lound and clear
He's seen how the Steelers front office sabotaged what was the best offense in football in 2017 trying to get cheap. They saved money on Bell and sent the run game to dead last in the league. He knows what generational talent is worth, and knows the Steelers have Zero chance of a playoff run without Watt.

Someone in the FB group took me up on that and told me I was talking out my *** and that Butler is great. I pointed out that Shades took over D playcalling last year and our opponents scored at least 40 points in each of our last three playoff games. Crickets.

In Dulac's (PG) chat just now, he had previously said Watt would have been signed days ago but now, he thinks he will play Sunday but won't be signed.

Huh? They offered Bell top contracts 2 years in a row and he refused. He ended up getting less to leave or are we forgetting that? The front office didn't sabotage anything whatsoever in 2017.
