i side with labor mostly because of exactly this.I think the Steelers position in negotiations gets weaker when it come to guaranteed money every time they cut a player before his contract is up, whether the reasons are valid or not. David DeCastro and Steven Nelson this year.
Completely missing the point that the Steelers most likely won’t have to consider a big QB contract for at least another 4-5 years.Imagine what they will be making in 10 years. Or 20. Super duper bargain by then I would imagine.
Yeah. I love the soft hold out stance. I understand his position but I won't applaud his none contact camp as some are. Watt is fully practicing now that pay checks are involved. Very noble of him. Hopefully this gets done and we won't have to worry about the tag next year. If it comes to the tag next year do you think Watt signs it right away while negotiations go on for a long term deal or does he take the Bell angle?@Steelmann has it. Bell and Watt's situations are completely different.
Watt is under contract with his 5th year option. He didn't miss a practice or meeting, he is trying to renegotiate his current contract.
Bell was NOT under contract. Was tagged for the 2nd time, and opted not to sign his tag and hold out in the hopes of singing a lucrative deal the following year. If he wasn't under contract, no way his agent would allow him to show up to practice.
If you guys think Watt will play his 5th option year and 2 tags, you are delusional. 1) the Steelers don't hold players hostage 2) the 2nd tag didn't work with Bell and sure AF won't work on Watt.
I missed the point or was I mocking your point that in 5 years his contract will be a bargain? Besides the fact I originally stated $30 mill was QB money only for you to say it isnt because 3 QBs at the moment have salaries in the $40 mill plus range. Then a handful are in the $30 mill range and the rest below. So as of now $30 mill is QB money. I do agree though. In five years it won't be.Completely missing the point that the Steelers most likely won’t have to consider a big QB contract for at least another 4-5 years.
The deal is done so I suppose all of this is a moot point, but $30 million is the old QB value. New QB contracts are going to be in the upper $30s to over $40 million now. No good QBs are going to sign contracts like Watt, Bosa, Donald, etc. anymore.I missed the point or was I mocking your point that in 5 years his contract will be a bargain? So how many $40 mill plus QBs are on the horizon? We have 3 now. Do you see 10 in the near future? 15? 20?The deal is done so I suppose all of this is a moot point, but $30 million is the old QB value. I see what you are saying. I just don't see many elite QBs that are coming up on contracts that will command $40 mill plus that will make $40 mill the standard. There are five guys making over $35 million right now. Baker and Lamar are going to join them soon. The next crop of young QBs are still a few years away and it's hard to project who will be successful and who will be busts, but if guys like Herbert, Burrow, Lawrence, etc. prove to be franchise QBs, they're all signing for over $40 million. I mean you got mediocre guys like Jimmy G, Wentz, Goff, all making near or above $30 million right now.
You mean like attend camp without fully participating? The star players get star treatment here.Maybe Tomlin will treat him as JU JU , let him do as he pleases
Mental reps. lolYea, missing those 3 drives in game 2 really screwed his conditioning...
He was at every practice and did every individual drill. No team drills, but was there for all of the mental reps. Didn't miss a meeting. This kid is a WATT. He's showing up on Sunday to wreck QBs!
To be fair they were pinballing him back n forth that game. Not like he was in his comfy position.Mental reps. lol
Nothing prepares a football player more than actually participating in live game action. Physically or mentally.
No, Watt missing those 3 drives and all of the team drills didn't "screw his conditioning," but it certainly didn't help him improve, did it? Now that he's finally signed, hopefully he can show some improvement on his playoff performance, when he registered 0 sacks and 0 quarterback hits.
