So at the game this week I was surprised to see so many empty seats. We had an uninspired game the previous week, but this is Monday night, under the lights. Steelers hadn't lost in 15 strait home games on MNF. Plus what else is there to do on a Monday night?

I know there was rain in the forecast, but I've been to plenty of stormy games that were filled to capacity.

At the end of the first Quarter, the crowd booed. Probably another 8,000 went home then. I'm not sure if it lit a fire under both squads, but the 2nd quarter was epic. Specifically the last 2 minutes. Probably the best 2minutes I've ever witnessed as a Steeler fan.

I've read some comments around here stating that the steelers "lucked out" or "got lucky with turnovers". Bullshit. Once the Texans were pinned inside the 10 after the TD, that crowd was incredible, and the defense fed off of it. It sounded like 90,000 were there screaming at Fitzpatrick. He was visibly shaken and the Texans, who had been enjoying a quiet evening at Heinz field, suddenly felt themselves unable to communicate, direct blocking assignments, or even think for that matter. The closed end of the stadium aided the defense by helping Foster lose focus, and Fitz rush a throw, when the play should have been a run. Terrible clock management by the Texans, and an excellent 2 minute drill that netted 21 pts by the Steelers. We were expecting another turnover after the Texans regained the possession inside the 10 again! Absolutely epic

If not for AB getting hosed on the TD catch, this game would have ended as a laugher.

The crowd may have been small this week, but damn, it was great to hear them help out their team when it mattered!

We got lucky and were gifted a win by the Texans. We could of course not score a TD in the 2nd half and if that onside kick was recovered we go into overtime. We beat a bad team on a fluke 3 minutes , enjoy it and move on, this team still has serious issues which will again be exposed the next 2 weeks.

From the stand point of a fan no you weren't missed, from the bottom line you were and it just might be sending a message. It was talked about on Steelers.com by missy and wolf and labs a little bit. If 10,000 do not show up and fail to spend $50.00 while there that is a big hit to the bottom line, $500,000.00 it will not take to many hits like that or even 1/2 that to begin to hit the owners revenue stream. One thing that was addressed in the discussion was the boo birds. I think Labs actually summed it up rather well when he stated that the fans do not want to be sold a bill of goods. They have been watching football for a while, with the focus being Steelers Football and they know the difference between poor performance and being edged out by a team that caught some breaks or just made one more play or a few more than our team that day.

If the team comes out and plays hard and looks like they know what is going on and still loose there will be lots of support for this team that's the way it was in the 60s and early 70s back when they were arguing over Hanratty and Bradshaw. In the last few seasons they have come out and played like they did not give a **** what happened. The fans pick up on this. Special teams was good and got a break at the end of the second quarter. The defense got a break from good play on their part and got some turn overs. The offense knocked it in real quick and then just about quit the rest of the game.

I think they got lucky in some respects. But they also took advantage of this luck and turned it into points something they have not been able to do lately. Even if you count some of it as luck you still have to be pleased that the steelers were able to get points out of it when it would not have been that far fetched to expect them to give the ball back or get sacked and penalized till they were out of scoring range.

I give them kudos for making a difference with the opportunities they had.

And on a side note if what I was hearing from the discussion regarding that trick play being called by Tomlin I will have to add something in his favor for that one. That was a gutsy call and the play was well designed from the beginning. If it was designed by Hailey and only called by MT he still gets credit as that was the time to try it, and Hailey gets credit for being creative and designing a play to the strengths of his team!

bottom line

If the coaching staff is preparing the team, and they are competitive the fans will come

Fans know the difference, and tire of a team showing up under coached and ill prepared.

And to be honest as I will watch every game. I will not go to a game and spend monies when a change need to be made, and isn't for whatever reason........

It made me happy. **** the NFL and Goodell. I hope all the stadiums around the league are half empty. Overpriced, lousy product.

The bad thing about a 25 year or whatever waiting list is you end up with older season ticket holders. I don't attend many games but whenever I do I'm always struck by the age if the crowd. I know several season ticket holders and the youngest one is 48. I'm afraid lame crowds and no shows are the norm now.

All of the dumb rules&bs calls have killed it for me. I look around the league and all i see is arm tackling. They're not even letting the she-hawks or san fran get away with stuff now. The product is just bad overall. It's just about unbearable for those of us who have been watching for a very long time. You pay good money, demand quality! We know what quality looks like. It's HOW YOU PLAY,not winning or losing that will keep people all in. I used to take pride in knowing that the Steelers would leave you battered, bruised and bloody no matter what. Now they're just another flag football team.

Before yinz get too riled up, this article puts the reality back in the story line.

The first paragraph ( I couldn't copy & paste it ?) says it all....

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Cope again.

We lose... let's whine and moan and talk about who we want to fire...

we win... let's whine and moan louder about how we got lucky and how everyone should be fired...

We won...we played a tough team that has legit stars on it and won... The play wasn't flawless, but the bottom line is that we won... I believe the Steelers are a .500 team at this point. Maybe it would be better if the Steelers went 3-13 but I'm hoping that we can win that extra one or two games that a .500 team needs to squeeze out to edge into the playoffs where anything can happen. It seems to me that a lot of people here would rather us lose so they can legitimize what they are whining about...

Maybe it's just in the cheap seats where I can afford to go but I see a surprisingly young crowd with lots of hotties in painted-on jeans.
When the team isn't playing well the weather becomes a big factor.

I always thought the atmosphere was better at the top were the true fans who can't afford 500 dollar seats sit. Plus I think the view is much better up there.

This post is useless without pictures

Sorry Wing but this is not even close - you have to remember that the Steelers have SOLD out all their games and the tickets are already paid for. So if the seats are empty then it is the FAN that is loosing the money not the organization .

I get so tired of posts like this. "If that 3 minutes didn't count, then..."

Those 3 minutes were a part of the game.

What about the 2-3 minutes at the end of the Tampa game? Can I say, "If it weren't for those 2 minutes..."

When the Patriots scored 3 TDS vs. the Jets in 3 minutes, those points shouldn't count?

Football is a 60 minute game. WE put the Texans in a bad position. We got turnovers everyone's been crying about.

Enough of this type of excuse making.

He's saying they lose money from concessions and merchdise not being bought.

Yes, but it's peanuts. It's not next to nothing - it is nothing - in the grand scheme of the NFL being on it's way to a $15 billion / year business.

But it has to be embarrassing to the team to have so many empty seats visible on TV for a primetime / national TV game. It's one thing if the team in question is already eliminated from the playoffs, but quite another for a team fighting to go 4-3 and still in the thick of the race for a playoff spot. I understand that Monday Night Football means nothing to us in Pittsburgh...we get 5 primetime games every year...a team like Jacksonville is lucky to get a home MNF game every 3 years...but still...

I would never tell someone else what to do with their time and money (I have a 2-year old so I can't get to a game unless I can get a babysitter), but it's a sad reflection on the situation that people with season tickets that don't want to go (or can't go) can NOT EVEN GIVE THE TICKETS AWAY TO SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO GO.

well to tell you the truth I don't think that concessions make up that much of the revenue .. and definitely not $500,000 - 10,000 people are not going to spend $50 each on that kind of stuff on game day . I myself spend NOTHING -- $5 for a cup of coffee is ridiculous

I think he means $50 in concession sales which might be a little high but I'm sure those empty seats lead to six figure losses.

Sure they are part of the game but they were gifts and will not happen again. We still played poorly for most of the game and the red flags are still there. Like I said we should enjoy the win but in the grand scheme of things we are still a bad team.

Those tickets didn't go unsold, just unused. There were definitely more empty seats than I've normally seen for a game and especially for a MNF game. It is what it is. People like a winner. When we win the seats will be full.

DISCLAIMER--this does not apply to ALL Steeler fans...

But the home crowd has been getting "softer" with each passing year..

I think the fact the NFL is turning into a mix of WWE and flag football people are slowly but surely moving away from NFL football and replacing it with something else. I truely believe in the end Goodell will have done enough bad that the NFL will no longer be the powerhouse of money making it has been in the past. If the owners were smart they'd see the slow decline of the diehard fan and know the fair weather fan will not be enough to sustain teams during long droughts of bad teams. Seattle is a perfect example. If they have two bad seasons I bet anything that 12th man is more of a 11 1/2 man before you know it.

Eventually Goodell will be fired and hopefully a commissioner will come in and undo what he ruined but is could take decades for the league to comeback from what they are doing to it.

+1

Steeler fans have become a very spoiled fan base. Hell, even back in the day when we were a SB caliber team, I never felt that the home crowd was nearly as rowdy as other stadiums in the league.
