and just to think the capicity jumps next year from 65050 to 68550.
The other issue is the price of the tickets -- with more and more people getting 60+ HD TV's they are opting to STAY in the comfort of their own homes with a frig full of beer than to travel to the Stadium and pay $7+ for a beer. They are also trying to force tailgating out. What was once parking lots are now Hotels,. Amphitheater and Restaurants.
Roger keeps saying he is trying to enhance the fan experience -- although EVERYTHING he has done has been to ALIENATE them -- He did it to women last year with the implementation of the "Clear Bag Policy' -- Really..-- There was a time when I took a DUFFEL bag into the games -- blankets, coffee , Hot chocolate (and a few additives ). I understand that the world has become a VERY dangerous place but come on -- women terrorists ....
They have priced the average person right out of the game. Steeler ticket prices have DOUBLED since Heinz field was opened and the price of concessions have gone through the roof . I do not purchase ANYTHING once I am in the game. And pretty much everyone around me doesn't either.
If I had not hurt my leg I would have been at the game!! But NO additional money would have been spent by me (except MAYBE to buy a 50/50 raffle ticket since the last 3 games the winner got over $50,000 )
Sorry Wing but this is not even close - you have to remember that the Steelers have SOLD out all their games and the tickets are already paid for. So if the seats are empty then it is the FAN that is loosing the money not the organization .

I believe he was refering to the $50 that WOULD HAVE been spent on beer, food, etc......

Actually it is exactly what I said it was. Fans do not show up they do not spend that 50.00 at the stadium, Beer, Food, memorabilia and programs do not get sold to empty seats. I would not find it hard to believe that the average fan spends an additional 50.00 when in the stadium. That does not include parking or funds spent outside the stadium.
You might not spend money not everyone needs to I said average. There are folks that eat and drink at games and that is expensive. There are guys that buy memorabilia. They have a chance to buy shirts jerseys etc at the stadium as well. All that merchandising is huge, which is why the nfl keeps pushing it so much.
In going to a sports bar to watch the game with a huge number of other displaced steeler fans it is normal for me to spend $50 to 60 dollars while there. I would not anticipate spending less at the game, in fact it is likely to be much more as I would likely consume the same amount of food and drink but end up paying much more for it.
I also understand where you are coming from as well. Folks like yourself that are in the area and have ways of conserving money on those things will do so. I suspect that a lot of the empty seats are from folks that might have had to make a bit more effort to get to the game than the folks that are close enough to attend all the time regardless of where the seats were.
My reasoning for that is the drop in ticket prices that folks were trying to sell. Normally there are people always trying to get a ticket and the price is high. My brother was and might still have season tickets. He used to sell between 2 to 4 game tickets a year and it paid for his tickets for the season. Those folks that bought his tickets were from out of town and likely spent a lot at the game because it was not something they could count on doing again.
I really think a lot of money is generated by the concessions of all types at the stadium.
Supply and demand. Pre-recession I saw an article on the toughest tickets to get in sports, based on availability and scalper's premiums. #1...NASCAR race in Bristol (I've been to three). #2...Pittsburgh Steelers home game. These days Bristol doesn't sell out and you can get Steelers tickets for face and sometimes less.My reasoning for that is the drop in ticket prices that folks were trying to sell. It is not a lot of money to NFL teams. $50,000 (just to use your example of 10,000 people spending $50/each) is a rounding error.

It's $500,000 , I hope you're not an accountant.
Continuing recession and high gas prices. Bomma hates rednecks.Did you see the spring race at charlotte? The whole turn 2 and down the back stretch were empty.

You guys are blaming it on the recession?
Pittsburgh Unemployment Rate: 6.2%
Cleveland Unemployment: 9.5%
Yet there stadium is continually well attended...
Unemployment rates have been massaged into useless numbers. Long term unemployed, those that are with out benefits are not counted but they still have no jobs.
well to tell you the truth I don't think that concessions make up that much of the revenue .. and definitely not $500,000 - 10,000 people are not going to spend $50 each on that kind of stuff on game day . I myself spend NOTHING -- $5 for a cup of coffee is ridiculous
Are a season ticket holder????I spend between 50 and 100 each game we go to. We hit about 4 a year ( due to living in Virginia ) 4 to 6 of us come each time and all of us spend that much. Of course we all have 5 to 8 beers and usually eat some dogs or something late in game.
Heck I don't think I've ever been to the game without spending 50 to 100 bucks
