As some of you know I've stated many times that in 40+ years of watching football I have never seen a better QB than Joe Montana. My argument is based on his abilities, I have never seen another QB with his skill set, he could do everything.

This guy's argument is based more on stats, the eras they played in, cheating vs. not cheating, etc.

He makes a great case for Montana as well.

Sorry guys....Montana is not the GOAT.....Brady is the GOAT PERIOD

Look I hate the Pats too....But give props where due....

NOT EVEN CLOSE

I suppose if you are ranking greatest ever backup Michigan QBs who were willing to have an illegal earpiece fitted in their helmet - then yes. Greatest cheater ever.

Yep... he is #1 there.... also Brady has the best Scarf collection in Qb history... that counts for something

Bullshit!! You're not allowed to lay a finger on Brady. His line is allowed to get away with holding every play, and his receivers get away with illegal blocks constantly. Let's not forget, it's easy to look good when you know the defense's calls. Brady couldn't hold a candle to Montana. He and the rest of that piece of **** team are nothing but frauds.

Hate to do it because I’m a dyed-in-the-wool Notre Dame fan and I loved Montana ( who am I kidding.. I still do)..... but Brady is the best. He’s been to 7... won 5.... and if two fluke catches never happen he most likely wins all 7. I’m putting the cheating stuff off to the side for now... just basing my opinion on what’s in the books. Montana was beyond great... but he won his 4 with more or less the same core group of players which include players that gave the 49ers some great defenses. Brady had some pretty good defenses backing him up in the early years, but nothing compared to those 9’er defenses of the 80’s. Can you imagine if Brady had Rice and Taylor on the outside, with Brent Jones and Craig coming out of the backfield to throw to for the bulk of his career?! Holy ****...

You can't put the cheating onto the side. Because we don't know the level on which they are doing it. Have done it and still ongoing doing it.

For me Montana and Manning would get nods over lady just based on that fact. They did it without cheating.

Johny Unitas is the GOAT. He is the template that the modern QB is based on.

The cheating gave them a +3 edge on average. Which is the margin the "won" their first 3. They last two they were beaten outright and won due to coaching incompetence on the other side...along with some refs in the last one.

Ha, first thing I thought when he came out against the Jets last weekend in the full scuba suit it that he has an ear piece under it.

Different times, and the league wasn't pass happy back then, combine that with no rules limiting the defense and there's no way to compare.

The whole notion of GOAT is stupid.

Patsy fans just came up with this to make them feel better about their otherwise miserable lives.

And why isn't Barry Bonds the greatest baseball player ever? Oh, yea.

Sorry, I, too am a huge Notre Dame fan, but most of your information here is incorrect.
Montana won his first two SBs WITHOUT Jerry Rice and Brent Jones.
Roger Craig was not there for Montana's fourth.
With the exception of Ronnie Lott ( all 4 SBs ) and Charles Haley ( just the last 2 SBs ) the 49ers defenses of the 80s were average to below average. Nowhere near the caliber of the Patriots of the 00s.

I've chimed in on this in other threads multiple times.
Montana is absolutely the GOAT.
The only stats that matter are he played in 4 SBs and won 4 SBs and in those SBs he never threw an INT. The biggest game on the biggest stage under the most pressure and zero mistakes.
Brady cannot say this.

This. Why, if Brady isn't considered the best because of, among other things the rules, should Montana? Montana's entire career was played after the Mel Blount rule.

I hate comparing too. I just think there are too many variables.

Yep.

I just want to point out, that years ago, on my Madden 98 game, I took every single one of my Steeler players and did the following in Franchise Mode.

A) I went into each player's individual stats and bumped up every single stat to "99", the highest possible rating. (You could only do this in franchise setup. I wasn't able to get back in and do it after the Franchise "started".)

B) I went into the trade deadline each year and traded my picks to the 1 or 2 teams who (at the time) had the worst record in the league, preferably teams in my division whom I'd see again and thus be assured of at least one more victory over.

(The net result of B was that my team always got the draft pick of one of if not the worst team in the league the following year while THEY got my #32 pick. For all the rounds.) Sometimes you could even bundle some picks so you could get a couple really low first rounders.

C) I always negotiated my new player contracts for the longest term possible at the lowest rate possible. If I didn't like them or found somebody better the following year or two, I could just let them ease off into obscurity or bundle them into a sweeter trade deal for the following year's draft.

I want to point out that this strategy in Madden 97 allowed me to never lose a game over 14 seasons. And I rarely had a team come within 60 points. (Sometimes the game would throw a ***** and make things interesting, but that was rare.)

I guess THAT makes me the best Madden player EVER!

There was still far less protection for QBs then and DBs we're still way more physical with wr's back then also. Oh yeah Montana never ******* cheated!

Rice didn't come into the picture until 1986.

Quite honestly I think you could give Brady all of those weapons and take him out of the systemic cheating they have in Foxboough. What you'd you'd have is a good but not great QB. He has every imaginable aid at his disposal on the sideline, the booth, the referees and the league office. My thought actually is, "Damn can you imagine how freaking great Montana could have been if they could have run illegal picks on every play to get guys open?"

Montana's wins were far more convincing. 2 of Brady's SB wins were the result of bonehead coaching decisions. Plus, he's lingered for nearly 20 seasons in a cupcake division aided by cheating, and at least for this season a shady replay official who has gifted him at least 2 games in the standings and maybe more.

Tommy "Lance Armstrong" Brady, GOAT player my ***. We as fans can only hope one day the truth comes out to all the cheating / fixed / league decisions / etc. ect.ect.. How anyone can even consider his GOAT status is unreal. Watch the games as overwhelming evidence is surfacing more and more.......obviously
