it's not the head coach's responsibility to be aware of his team's TO situation or clock management. I mean players are allowed to call TO themselves.

I sure hope that was sarcasm. Think of all the times Cowher called one of the zebras over so he could call time out as soon as the play ended.

I'm not following. If you call TO with 2:09 on the clock, you save 9 seconds. A TO can save a lot more time than that and allow you to use the middle of the field after the 2:00 warning can it not?

Exactly right. From what I understand the HC is only responsible for press conferences.

If you call the timeout with 2:08 left, and they run, the clock stops at 2:00 for the punt, and you're left with 2:00 and they are punting. If they call a pass you're left with more than 2:00. The Steelers had ALL THREE TIMEOUTS. What the hell were they saving them for.

It's just dumb clock management.

You call one there, and you get the ball back with two left, while not allowing the run play to take you to the 2 min warning.

Having the extra TO allows you to stop the clock without spiking the ball and wasting a down. It allows you to use a draw play or a pass in the middle of the field. It allows you to call TO instead of rushing to get everyone reset. I understand calling TO with 2:29 remaining but with 2:09 that TO May save you more time after the 2:00 warning.
