2025 preseason wk1 Steelers at Jags 8-9-25 7pm gameday thread

If Howard misses all of the preseason, you keep Thompson as your #3 and stash Howard on the PS.

Thompson looked good tonight, but it’s a far cry from what he looked like in Miami his first couple years. I think we’ll see him fall closer to that than his peak right now by the end of the preseason.

BUT, if Thompson does prove to be keepable and they want to keep Howard around it’s gotta be IR.
You just don’t take the chance of a QB you like clearing waivers.

One benefit to an injury is worst case scenario you can milk it out and use it as a redshirt season of sorts.

No way Howard could do what Thompson did tonight. But Thompson is 28 and been in the league substantially. And it's highly unlikely he's going to improve to an NFL starter level at this point. He's had big preseason before that have not meant regular season success. Id say if you got down to either Will Howard or Skylar Thompson for any significant amount of time you are dust anyhow. Id still keep Howard and risk Thompson on waivers. Thompson is a more polished player. But he should be. Howard has an unknown upside.

That’s exactly right. But I’m not even convinced that they would bring him back to PS.
4 QBs is a rare sight and he would get absolutely no reps during practice. I’d imagine they would just tell him to keep the phone close and wish him well if it got to that point.

Most of the time if you see a team with a QB on the practice squad it’s because they are only carrying 2 on the roster.

Who are your top 5-6 receivers after tonight.
Dk, Austin 3 are locks.
Roman Wilson probably makes. For sure.
Skoronek is a special teams ace but the two Rookies Taylor and Williams looked good tonight. They are keeping 3 TEs for sure. You could work around it by cutting Heyward but you do need a FB if you play I. Tough decisions.

You will have to exposed him to waivers to do that and he can be nabbed anytime of the year to an active roster.

yes, he must go to an active roster, The chances of that happening are slim if he misses preseason. He was a late round pick for a reason. If a team needs a QB on their active roster in the regular season, they will go for somebody with experience. That's why Flacco is still in the league.

And who cares if you lose him. Steelers are drafting a QB in 26.

But under that logic who cares if you lose Skylar Thompson. He was a 7th round pick and has shown very little in regular season.

That in no way was it even remotely close to a personal foul. That was ******* terrible.

The jagoff fans didn't like me very much on that play. I was yelling home cooking. Why don't we sing the qb a love song and lay him down gently.

And of course they get a td after that to keep them in the game.

I really detest the roughing the qb calls. I'd say 90% of the time they are absolutely ****. The holding that isn't called rubs me raw as well.

This is the product now.

Yes they do have to clear waivers, but if signed to PS I believe they can still protect 4 players a year.

Thompson got stroked two almost three steps after he threw one. That was a lot closer to the line. Only dissapointmemt tonight was lack of pressure.

Zero pressure.Which I do chalk up to this vanilla basic preseason defense. A lot of raw new guys and it's better to put nothing on film for future opponents to game plan on. It's just a glorified practice.

If the Steelers had hit the qb like that it's a foul, actually it's a foul for most teams. Gosh if that was Mahomes he's getting kicked out of the game and fined.

I was in disbelief it wasn't called. It's even worse when you're actually at the game seeing the mickey mouse bullshit. It was clear and in the open.

Call it all or call nothing. The half *** application of the rules blows.

I'd rather they just go back to the old ways, minus the head hunting.

The season is toast if the Steelers have to start QB3, so it simply comes down to who has more upside moving into the future.
Well perhaps if it is a long term start. Short term I think they could make due with what we saw today.

I saw Harmon and Sawyer with pressures. Overall I agree I would have liked to see more. Some of it was who the Steelers didn’t play. Three OLBers and their main DE.

So yes, but said player is not entirely protected. They are only protected 6 days of the week, so there’s a gap. Plus, we could always match the elevation if claimed by another team.

But I think a lot of people are getting way too excited about Thompson’s first week of preseason with us. There is still a very slim chance of him sticking around on the 53.

Solely based on the business side of it, if they’ve seen enough of Howard to warrant a 53 spot, Thompson is gone, signed sealed delivered.
And there’s a good chance that happens even if they haven’t seen enough simply because we just spent a pick on him.

You just don’t roll the dice on a QB if you have any faith in his development at all.

So this is kinda my point in a weird way.

I also don’t think it’s super slim. He was a late round pick, but that’s a premium position and most teams are carrying 3 now. There’s a good chance he’s claimed just because he’s somebody who can MAYBE develop. Nobody has a Super Bowl winner at QB3. Teams roll the dice on their QB3, most are young guys.

Absolutely, if you cut him it’s “who cares if you lose him.” But we’ve seen what one of them is, and you can roll the dice on the other.

I still think it’s way too early to make the decision.
We definitely don’t have a Damoun Patterson type performer currently on the roster that I’m writing in.

BUT, to entertain it, if the season started today mine are -

LOCKS -
DK
Austin
Wilson

Borderline lock -
Skworonek

I don’t think 6 is an option right now. That 5th spot is up in the air.
If woods steps up, he will be that veteran Blocker type. But one of the rookies could make a push. If I’m basing it solely on tonight’s game, I might give the edge to Max Hurleman out of the bunch. Hes position flexible, made a couple plays on ST and had a couple nice grabs. I’ve read he’s been real solid in training camp too.
