The problem from Trump is magnified because he needs to win large battleground states, and is mostly behind in them. When was the last time in a big election where the polls were off by 5 points?

History shows Trump has a giant ego ( his enemy and a strength ) and has always known when to cut his losses. If he drops any further in the polls, there is a chance, with some political deal making might step out of the race. Pence would beat Hillary Clinton. So would Kasich.

Trump's comments dropped him hard in recent polls. One new one had him back down by 13 points nationally. He better hope the debate brought that back in line or he may not have enough time to fix this. The media totally blew off the new email dump about Hillary's speeches, etc.
