4th Round Pick- Wetjen

Well as we all know, our return teams flat out sucked so this should go a long way in fixing that.
Could also be used like the Pats used Edelman and that would be just fine by me.
Was surprised they used the fourth on him but suppose they really wanted him.

ST is a third of the game. If he can get us 5 more yards per return a game that adds up. Especially if he can take 1 or 2 to the house every year.

It was but last year kick return made a big come back.

True last year made a resurgence with KO returns

Hopefully he is worth something, just seems like a wasted pick to me…hopefully he excels, but I’m not holding my breath.

Seems like day 3 has had quite a few head scratchers the last several years.

He is a Steeler now so hopefully he’s better than the wasted 3rd rounder Roman Wilson. That seems like a low bar to jump.

What if the steelers dont put as much effort into the draft as we think they do. What if Fairlanes draft sheet makes more sense?
The head scratchers i see make me wonder.
🤔

I saw a clip of Kiper saying he would go in the 4th or 5th. For whatever that's worth.

Maybe McCarthy and staff are giving respect to the last draft held in Pittsburgh in 1948 when general managers (usually the team owner) made selections by picking names out of Street & Smith magazine using player stats but without ever having seen the guys play?

Khan had been getting some really good players in the 4th, so in that sense, drafting a returner was disappointing. However, if he becomes a top returner in the league and can contribute 20-30 receptions a year, he'll look like a great pick.

At the Press Conference Khan just said this is on coach, McCarthy WANTED him and he would have fun with him so Khan gave him his guy…McCarthy also said we were determined to upgrade the return game before the draft and we just did

The team has had nepotism woven into the fabric of the culture for years/decades.

I’ve never deep dived into the scouting department, personnel and backgrounds but I’m wondering how much nepotism and favoritism is shown to the scouts’ assessments.

Seems like we’ve had a pipeline from Iowa of all places lately, just wondering if that is one of the favorite scouts that does that area. Iowa is not a traditionally strong FB school and has had an offensive starved team for years but we have stacked two 3rds and a 4th (all offensive players) from that “hidden goldmine” of offensive talent in the last 2 years.

Some of the picks certainly make ya wonder.

A safety or DL or TE or virtually any non waste of a pick would’ve been cool there.

Get a guy in the 4th that you could have as a UDFA makes little sense, guess they really think Roman Wilson can’t be the RS.

That pick was a head scratcher.

Ffs couple that pick with a 7th and try to get a 3rd next year or anything but that…there, the gauntlet has been thrown done.

Prove you’re worth something, please… Wetjen
I hope his return game transfers to the next level. This feels like daniel sepulveda 2.0.
They could have taken so many guys. Mìke Washington jr would have been my pick. 230lb Rb with 4.3 speed. People were projecting him 2-3 rounder. He would have been the perfect dart throw/depth piece.

If he's just a return man then 4th round is too high. If McCarthy has plans for him as a slot or maybe a 3rd down back then it could be a great pick.

Lots of good comments on this. Could he be had later? I'm thinking 5th would be the place for this rookie. Has a skill set but it's value. Trading back here like we did in the 5th imho would have been a small gamble but worth the value. Perhaps we could have gotten another 6 or a six in 27. Currently we have no 6 next year.

I keep seeing his highlights, and the dude is quick, makes good decisions, and looks a good bit faster than his 40 time. The question for the return game will still come down to blocking. For years now, we can never get back to the 20 or 25, while other teams almost always get past the 30 on us. It's baffling, but hopefully he and new coaches will help.

Use to be that way, but not so much anymore.

Offense is about 45% of the game by design / rules / protection of key players.

Defense is about 35% of the game by design, nothing makes gambling happier than points.

Special Teams is about 20% of game and had been less because of rule changes. The NFL saw that they lost to much excitement so injected the current K-return rule to add in more excitement and importance of STs.

You will never see the 1/3 split again due to the gambling / excitement aspect of money being spent.

Old school just got to dangerous as they showed us by there taming of the sport through rules and fines.

Hers my thoughts on the pick. Regardless of the percentage of the game you feel special teams consists of, it is important. We have not had a consistent returner for a long time. There are only so many open slots on this team. It is unlikely all 10 picks make the 53-man roster. If this guy is even close to being the returner he looks on tape he will make the squad and will be on the field immediately performing an important duty than can change a game. Not many 4th round picks are going to contribute right away and to the extent this guy should. Additionally, he showed promise as a receiver at the shrine bowl. Hell, maybe he can also be a gunner. I will take the instant contributor in the 4th any day.

Not that baffling when you consider how bad bubbles was at coaching ST.

Players constantly out of position. Not knowing the rules. Making bad in-game decisions, ect..

Hopefully the new ST coach can make things better than the old regime.

I’m really looking forward to seeing how this new coaching change really affects the over-all play of the team.

Don’t get me wrong SIR, I feel all three aspects are VERY important to the team / game.

20 years ago, a bad special team could cost you big time due to the importance of the unit.

Now days, that “cost” is less due to the les-impotence of that unit.

The NFL has taken note of the difference discrepancy of the unit and has been trying to make the more relevant to the game.

I think it is working and narrowing the gap of relevance.

YES, we need a return man desperately and I’m so hoping our draftee can be that guy.

Thanks for your great post(s) along the way.
